Fun fact (applicable in Australia), If a column plan size is larger than 1m^2 it has to be subtracted from the floor plan when selling the apartment. If you make the column 0.99m^2 then you can ignore it and have a "bigger" apartment size to put on a marketing brochure to sell. In that case, its worth pumping concrete and steel into it to make it smaller. This was a few years ago - not sure if still the case now.

An important issue in having an efficient RC or any structure is participation of structural engineer in early stages of the project phase. A structurally inefficient layout can't be made efficient by a sophisticated structural modelling, analysis and design. Like what you said, for some reasons most textbooks at college are heavily theoretical or don't teach the design efficiency that much. It would be better if there was a textbook written by practitioner engineer for junior engineer, so that this important stuff do not only have to be transmitted through experience.

Looking for some analytical videos, like design of flat slabs, p-delta analysis procedure, concrete filled steel hollow tubes,design of cruciform steel columns, design of a base plate under moment and axial force, bolted moment/shear connection, etc... These videos are great, insightful, but some sections are not very evident, even after codal guidelines... Looking for some clarity from a guy like you.

I agree with shifting of the column inwards to have cantilevers to balance the sagging moments in adjacent beams. especially for high rise plates. but i never knew the 1/3 span rule and would this have an effect if column size is 2.5m diameters (stiffer than floor beams), beam size 0.4x1.0m and span length is 10m?
Hi David the columns would effect this. As moment is pulled into the column the stiffer the column the smaller the cantilever, for efficient design. But it would be relative stiffeness column vs slan/beam.

Do you mean more efficient (faster, easier, cheaper) to build? I can understand why the first would be more efficient (maintaining the same grid throughout the height of the building) but I don't understand the advantage of the second (moving the column away from the column edge to introduce a cantilever)
Hi Neuron, it depends, no transfers is quicker cheaper and easier. Canterlivers helps balance the moment better the top and bottom of the slab(assuming you haven't increased the building size) also helps balance deflection as the cantilever will pull the back span up.
I find that almost every mechanical engineer insists on punching holes in the slab right next to the columns and as much as I try to steer them to the green zone they refuse. As if on principle.

A facility design (residential or light commercial) from scratch to final detailing (as per the prevailing code) including all elements (foundation, slab, beams, columns, bracing, etc.) would offer a good piece of learning. Kindly consider my request.

Hi anon, thanks can happen. It can sometimes be a architectural restriction. So worth discussing with the architect.

minimum reinforcement is required to prevent a brittle premature failure due bending or tension it is also to control cracking
