JEMIMA AND IMRAN KHAN ANNOUNCE SPLIT
Pakistan's most famous couple, cricket legend-turned-politician Imran Khan and his British socialite wife Jemima, have divorced.
"I sadly announce that Jemima and I are divorced," Khan said in a statement released by his political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf, on Tuesday.
The statement hinted Jemima had never fully adjusted to life in Pakistan.
"Whilst Jemima tried her best to settle here, my political life made it difficult for her to adapt to life in Pakistan."
The statement did not elaborate.
The news could fuel rumours circulating in the British press surrounding her growing friendship with British actor Hugh Grant.
An official in Khan's party told The Associated Press that the divorce took place a few days ago in England.
He said all issues between the two were resolved amicably.
It was not clear who would get custody of their two sons.
Khan, elected to parliament in 2002, has become a strong voice in opposition to President General Pervez Musharraf's government.
His name is often brought up on a short list of up-and-coming future Pakistani leaders.
Jemima Khan campaigned for her husband, speaking to crowds of thousands in the Urdu language.
But in recent months, she has spent more and more of her time in England, sparking rumours that the couple's relationship was on the rocks.
Jemima Khan is the daughter of the late British billionaire Sir James Goldsmith.
She was only 21 when she married Imran in 1995, a dashing man who was then twice her age.
The marriage caused a stir in both Britain and Pakistan.
Jemima, whose family is Jewish, converted to Islam in order to marry Khan and changed her name to Haiqa.
Khan was the captain of Pakistan's elite cricket squad when it won the 1992 World Cup and is considered the best player ever produced in this cricket-crazed nation of 150 (m) million people.

He didn't divorce his wife Jamama Goldsmiths but unfortunately she couldn't live on Pakstan due fale ancient Tailes smuggling case and Moulana Fazal Rehman false accusation of being Jew wife. Because of this she could not go to Pakistan because of fear of being arrested by then Nawaz Shriff. Government. Imran Khan because of Politics could not lived in UK ; so they divorced amicably. They both got hughe respect for each others. And Imran Khan love his both sons from Jemama Goldsmiths. They are the only children they have ; whome they adored very much.
