In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka goes through a crisis when he realizes he's not able to do a lot of the things that Aang, Katara, and Toph are able to. In the "Sokka's Master" episode, the show explores how he comes to terms with that in a really unique and satisfying way.

I've always liked this episode, but I had never thought of it in the context of how it demonstrates the best of Sokka's intrinsic qualities. In particular, I never considered how Sokka might have tried to push the meteorite alone or withhold the space rock from Toph if he were more deeply insecure about his perceived inadequacy. Very insightful.

I`m literally crying right now. My family always wanted me to be different, even better than what I am now. They are all narcissistic and extremely competitive engineers or lawyers, and I'm the only one who had artistic interests and was very sensitive. For many years I felt like I was dumb, not enough, and even less, and it's something that still deal with. If I ever have kids, I'd want them to grow in a positive environment that reminds them that no matter what path they follow, they'll never have to compare themeselves with anyone else.

You are enough just being you bro. Don't let anyone make you feel otherwise, even family. I know your pain, but we CAN overcome it. Our boi Sokka showed us that :)

Sokka was my least favorite main character at first, but Sokka's Master was definitely one of my favorite episodes. It definitely left me wanting more Sokka-centric episodes (and Boiling Rock didn't disappoint)

The part near the end where Sokka confesses to the master that he is water tribe perfectly demonstrates that he is ok with who he is. Even risking his own safety to be vocally true to himself & proving his worth - something he coudnt do by being dishonest.

I think that Sokka is the 2nd wisest character in Avatar, after Iroh. The episode teaches us that we can always succeed, even if we break all the rules and conventions in order to do so. It teaches us to not be ashamed or afraid of forging your own path and doing things a different way. I feel like this lesson should be taught in schools to encourage the invention and creativity that made inventions like tire rubber and microwaves and airplanes possible.

One thing i noticed with people rewatching ATLA is how a lot of us used to have a "crush" on Zuko because of his "edgyness" and how Sokka used to be one if the least favorite character when even the show itself was telling you how unhealthy it was : Because Zuko is not an"edgy" dark character, he is a freaking traumatized kid heavily hurt by years of bad treatement. His unger his not cool, his unger is an unhealthy coping mecanism. And Sokka is an adorkable dude who's good at making jokes and care about the people around him, he is the guy who as the most romantic interactions in the show for a reason : because of course people would be more willing to date a guy who's funny and kind !!
Altough Zuko character looked "cool" it is important to aknowledge that realisticlly speaking you won't date or thirst on someone like Zuko (he as way to many daddy issues to not be repressed gay anyway) because hunger and sadness is not sexy, it's just sad.
Zuko is a good example of how to write an "edgy" character in a good way : by aknowledging that his edgyness is basiclly trauma and pain an not just a mood than make you look badass.
Now that people are older i see everyone thirsting on Sokka like mad, because we can see what's make's him attractive in Yue or Suki eyes : he is funny and he is carring (i mean the episode were he make that awfull sand sculpture of Suki is genius : yeah it's ugly and it's doesn't look cool like Toph Ba Sing See stuff, but he made it FOR HER ! Wouldn't you'r heart melt if a cute boy or girl put genuine effort in a sculpture of you, he made juste because he loves you ?) those are qualities that d'ont look that "badass" on papper, especially when you'r a kid who just like cool fight scenes, but they always are when it come to social unteractions.
Basically i'm pretty sure Sokka is going to have ALLLL the dates !

One of my favorite parts about Sokka’s growth- it doesn’t all happen in the show. People don’t master something overnight. It’s fine that Katara and Aang mastered multiple bending styles in a few months, but that’s not relatable. Mastering a skill usually takes years and I appreciate the writers adding that quality to the character most of us are already relate to. Sokka is the best!

I was pretty much feeling worthless these days (I think the social distancing is finally getting me hahaha, but I'm #stayinghome all the way). I was comparing myself with my friends A LOT. I felt pretty much like Sokka. But now I want you to know that you made me a little happier now, I think this video was kind of made for me lol. I feel a pride now that took me a while to feel. I always felt bad for Sokka because since he couldn't bend anything he was often seen as weaker then the rest of the Gaang, I was so happy when I first watched this episode because I thought it was gonna give him a purpose or something, it did give us the sick space sword that he has, but it's more about accepting and growing from the fact that he isn't as "capable" as the rest of the Gaang, that's why this episode is pretty high on my favorite episodes list (which is saying alot considering its ATLA we are talking about).
I also love how each member of the Gaang gets their own episode to grow, and develop as a character, like "Zuko Alone", "Sokka's Master", "The Southern Raiders", "Bitter Work" and "The Runaway", these character developments episodes are what makes the characters from this show so compelling and real, and not just some 2 dimensional good guys (or in Zuko's case a 2 dimensional villain that turn good because plot) and it's at least my reason of why this is one of the best if not the best show ever created since I dont really have the nostalgia factor since I only got to watch it recently, I just love this show and its characters so much.

In my mind, part of Sokka's full absorption of the sexism in his society is that, especially w him being the "man" of the village, Katara's bending may be special and unique and praise-worthy, but she can't *really* outrank him, cause she's a girl. He's a man, that's something that'll make him stronger than everyone in his village in his mind.

thank you so much for covering this episode! it’s definitely one of the most interesting in the series i think. sokka’s my favorite character, and i have a feeling this specific episode and arc is a huge part of why. i’ve dealt with a lot of issues regarding self worth and comparing myself to others and it’s always nice to see that little part of myself in my favorite stories. the obstacles sokka faces being a non bender, surrounded by arguably the greatest benders of their time, could so easily go ignored and glossed over but i’m so grateful they didn’t. there really needs to be more fiction that’s about someone’s struggles with inadequacy that end with them accepting themselves as they are, rather than some herculean transformative “they’re awesome now!” movie magic. that’s not how real life works, and even if someone manages to grow to be exactly who they want to be-accepting themselves first never hurts.

Should make a video about Aang. I feel like he’s one of the more slept on characters. Yeah, he doesn’t have as big of a change like characters such as Zuko, or Korra, but I think that’s a very important part of his character. He’s a lot like captain America. They both aspire to be inspirations for positive change in a world that’s very different from how they remember it while doing their best to not let the world radically change them. Oh, and they were both frozen in ice for decades. So, there’s also that I guess.
