We have a water softener and still get hard water stains. We've also been experiencing a black soot in our tank for about two years now. We are constantly having to shop vac the black soot out out. We have no idea where it is coming from. It is in two of our commode. Igh!
Plumber here: don't put anything in the tank. There's also store bought bleaches for the tank, don't use them either they'll corrode your rubber washers and you'll be calling me when your toilet won't stop flushing into the bowl.

That's true. I have an thing for having a super clean water closet and have tried every automatic toilet gaget available. Look super and smell like he'd of 🌹. It cost me a pretty penny and a lot of trouble. Even tired this no effect. Now went dollar bought 12 cheap toilet brushes for year.

Once when it blocked the flash valve and caused an $800 water bill, and once when it flooded a house by blocking the overflow. Homeowners insurance does not cover intentional stupidity
Don't do that. Roger Wakefield, the Plumber who has a channel on youtube, says that can ruin the gaskets and other workings in the tank with some of the junk that's in the soap. He says don't put ANYTHING else in that tank except water.
Please yall ...just use a toilet bowl tablet designed for toilets....no one needs soap scum accumulating inside the toilet deposit, it will wreak havoc on the mechanisms...
I would not put anything in the toilet tank. Not even those bleach tablets. How about just cleaning the toilet bowl every 3rd day to keep it fresh smelling and free of any build up. It only takes less than 5 minutes. Clean the toilet seat, underneath and then the bowl. Putting a bar of soap could possible cause pipe build up as the water in a toilet is usually cold. Soaps are moisturizing oils might cause problems.
All I have put inside the tank is a bottle filled with 2lt of water so the water is not wasted. It used to flush way too much water. Hopefully this didn't risk anything. Has been there for 3-4 years
I've known people to place a brick in their tank, but had not heard of the 2 liter bottle. Same principle though, which displaces water, thus saving how much is used for each flush I believe? I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong. =)
*Update; just found out plumbers do not reccomend the brick, as it can deteriorate over time & cause problems. Articles written by 3 different plumbers say the 2 liter bottle is fine, & saves you up to 10 gallons of water a day~ Yay!
The reduction in flushing water can cause your waste water line to start plugging with toilet paper and your waste solids. Just because the toilet bowl is empty does not insure your line is clear. At least your clothes washer and dishwasher helps flush your waste line.
Agreed do not do this, the small holes that you cannot see below the rim will get clogged over time. The only way to remove the clog is with the tip of a clothes hanger, for each and every hole which is extremely time consuming..
I fell for the wadded-up-foil thing. That did nothing but float around & get stuck under flapper with every flush. Never ever do that. Soap and anti bacterial bars can reduce the amount of anaerobic bacteria in your septic tank that digest the waste materials. Resulting in less decomposition.
we in germany we have "Klosteine", they are little soaps in a plastic holder you can hang into the toilet. Same result. Don`t you have them in your country?
Up front it will help but it will cause a slimy soap build up inside the toilet whick can affect the gaskets and flapper valve...think of a bar of soap in your tub..how slimy it gets...second this is ..the sock was hung on the fill valve. This will affect the operation of the float falve.
Not only is that destroying the rubber and silicone seals which are going to make your internal parts we're out prematurely but nice job by not connecting the replenishing tube😂

I tried this it works no more stains, only think it does leave the water cloudy but with a fresh scent. I would suggest using a strong scented soap. Also I just dropped the soap in to the side like those blue tablets. 👍🏽

Just clean your toilet at least every other day. It really isn't that hard. We use it everyday so we should take pride in cleaning it the proper way 😂😂
I poured some cleaning vinegar from the dollar store in the tank & bowl, and let it sit for a few hours. This cut down the growth of scum in the toilet a lot. The plunger is still fine, but those are super easy to replace anyway. In any event, don't use soap like this! You'll just get more scum and growth. Use strong vinegar from time to time.

Being told that soap can kill bacterias which needed to decompose the feces. Happened when somebody's not listening, so i had to use caustic soda, or baking soda+vinegar.
Or you can just clean your toilet. I would rather not poison any more water than is absolutely necessary. If I clean my toilet nothing stains it and nothing sticks to it.

Yeah, this works great! It works a little better if you hang part of the sock under the "flappy thing". It ensures constant water flow so it's never standing water to grow bacteria. The water bill was a bit higher afterwards, but it did work! I subscribed!!! Do you have any tips on hot water heaters? 😂

This makes the water in the tank undrinkable in case of emergency. I remember years ago we were told that if there was a natural disaster and had no water service, we could drink the water in the tank. If you put soap in it, you would be unable to drink it.

Seriously, a lot of hard soaps also clog pipes. I say forgetabout this supposed hard soap “tip!” Instead, mix some citric acid granules in hot water and pour in the tank once a month. Will clean all hard water build up and any rust.

My late father rip who was only an occasional drinker told me a story before about the nicest bottles of beer he ever drank in his life, while he was a younger man and working to help a nearby farmer to bring in hay one very hot summer, when they were finished in the middle of a big field out in the middle of nowhere the farmer said would yee like a bottle of beer. My father being surprised said where u gonna get beer and the old man who was a known heavy drinker just grinned and walked over to a well in the middle of the field and proceeded to pull up a rope which brought up a big fishnet bag full of ice cold beers from the bottom of the well. My father said they were divine on such a hot evening after working so hard. The scene on the rooftop in shawsank redemption always reminds me of his beer story.

Soap is huge poison in our water table. Many people think these poisons and cancer causers can be processed out of the water table. It can’t.

It’s so sweet you take such good care of your mom but sorry you have to work and do everything around the house I recently found out I can get paid for taking care of my husband who’s had 4 strokes so I’m definitely going to do that it’s been a struggle trying to live off just his disability I have to care for him 24/7 maybe you can get that where you live it’s a lot more than I ever got paid when I was working and it’s tax free ❤

Yeah, this works great! It works a little better if you hang part of the sock under the "flappy thing".
It ensures constant water flow so it's never standing water to grow bacteria. The water bill was a bit higher afterwards, but it did work!

I bought this, and it supposedly will last 10 yrs. I had horrible rings from my well water, it has worked for me but only been about 9 months so far.

You use soap and detergents every day in sinks and showers (i hope, lol). So septic is ok but.... this is not good for your toilet!

Yes, soap and detergents kill the microbes which decomposes the fecal matter. Septic tank will top up quite early with the use of soap or detergents
This makes the water in the tank undrinkable in case of emergency. I remember years ago we were told that if there was a natural disaster and had no water service, we could drink the water in the tank. If you put soap in it, you would be unable to drink it.

You will have bits of paper & fabric material which will clog up the tubes & toilet. #2 the soap will build up & ruin the rubber gaskets, causing leaks. #3 putting stuff in your tank will forfeit any manufacturers' warranty.

@@dr.raashi not on my Septic system, it all goes the same place and there is no decomposition going on in it, I have to have it pumped out every 2 years.
Seriously, a lot of hard soaps also clog pipes. I say forgetabout this supposed hard soap “tip!” Instead, mix some citric acid granules in hot water and pour in the tank once a month. Will clean all hard water build up and any rust.
Also some cats like to drink from the toilet , there always be someone who leaves the toilet cover up 😜 protect your fur baby 💞

Never ever do this. The scum build up is unreal. It's quite disgusting actually. Plus you fuck up the flush because the rubber wears away so fast.

My late father rip who was only an occasional drinker told me a story before about the nicest bottles of beer he ever drank in his life, while he was a younger man and working to help a nearby farmer to bring in hay one very hot summer, when they were finished in the middle of a big field out in the middle of nowhere the farmer said would yee like a bottle of beer. My father being surprised said where u gonna get beer and the old man who was a known heavy drinker just grinned and walked over to a well in the middle of the field and proceeded to pull up a rope which brought up a big fishnet bag full of ice cold beers from the bottom of the well. My father said they were divine on such a hot evening after working so hard. The scene on the rooftop in shawsank redemption always reminds me of his beer story.
