That body is certainly gorgeous Dave. To paint or not to paint, that is the question!! I would use the body cutouts to test different paint and stains to see what would be best. Idea? Looking forward to the next video's.Great job!! Stay well, stay safe my friend! John Russell (73 year young Rocker now in a rocker ;) in the U.S.A.(Born in Portsmouth U.K)
I built the high end Wilkinson Tele kit from Stew Mac, it comes with all high end Wilkinson parts and |I got a good discount on nitro laquers and clear coat for buying the kit, I ended up with an excellent Telecaster that is comparable to my Fender Telecaster. I had great fun building the kit and did it as per the instructions with loads of sanding pre and post finish with grain filler and a vinyl undercoat, I love taking this guitar out of the case, that nitro smell is addictive!
I did make a p-bass body from hald a ash log i got from a friend. Came out quite nice. So now i’m thinking of doing it once more and make a strat body as well. Great fun.
This looks like the perfect gift for anyone who just wants to play around with a guitar or if you're looking for a base frame to do tons of modifications on.
Thanks for this video, Dave. I've often thought about getting a kit guitar but really didn't want the faff of soldering, wiring etc. Thought about a Crimson kit (which are stunning quality, but expensive) and you have convinced me that the HB is the place to start. I've got 3 of their finished guitars, which are incredible value and fun to play, so looks like the wife and kids will be buying me a kit for my next birthday. Thanks again.
The whole progress from 14:58 till the end is sooo satisfying to watch, it's like an ASMR video but way better. The way you polish and ensemble that guitar makes me calm and satisfied :)
How is this possible? This kit is €69,-and it’s just screwed together!! You could play on a broomstick and it would still sound great I think. Amazing, realy amazing!! It’s really true what they say, the player makes the difference! Keep sharing Dave, you’re amazing! 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
Hi from Phoenix, Arizona. I just put this kit together and love it. I cut the headstock to a Fender style template and painted the headstock and body turquoise and it's surf cool. I tried spray paint first and then switched to an acrylic and applied it with a cloth and it went on super smooth and then finished it with True Oil to a gloss finish. Final step was applying auto polish to give it a high sheen. I may get another one and use magic swirl paint where you dip it into the paint and it comes out with a swirl like pattern. Good luck with it. Look forward to the next video.
My son and I are thinking of doing one of these kits together, and what I like about this video is that it looks very much the way I would do it. I have a home made desk I use as a work bench, but I imagine it will be very much the same experience, not corporate at all. It's also interesting that a $72.00, kit guitar can make a person who has guitars and equipment worth many times more, be as happy and excited as a kid at Christmas. I share your enthusiasm. Great playing, thanks for the video and the music, and the motivation.
Dave gets a box with 2 Lego pieces, puts strings on it and makes it sing! I am currently working on my project as well. today I put filler on the body and will sand tomorrow.
Hello Dave . Glad your safe and well. I think we are all struggling with this insanity . Keep playing and uploading your video's they keep some of us sane mate. Love the guitar by the way . Nice to see you enjoying putting it together. Sounds ace too . Dave I bet you could put elastic bands over a shoe box and play it. Lol
Awesome video Dave! Also, awesome playing. That guitar is going to be valuable some day just because of you building it and playing it on video. You are absolutely amazing buddy. Furthermore, I completely understand the "struggle" at this time in history. Just remember, we are ALL in this together my friend. I keep telling my daughter, "Every person, everywhere is in the same boat". Keep on ROCKIN' my friend. Can't wait to see the next video.
Yesss!!! I’ve been wanting to see you build a lot guitar from scratch for along time! I know you’ll do a super thorough job of showing the build process. Congrats! &Thank you Mr. Nick Oswald!
I bought a Thomann Jazzmaster kit , pretty good for 77 euros . the neck was aligned and matched the sides of the neck pocket well but there was a 2mm gap bewteen the bottom of the neck and the guitar body. Aesthetc thing more than anything because the neck was very firm and the scratchplate covers the gap but when I do the rebuild I'll put a shim in.
Thank you Dave. You have inspired me to do the same. Thomann should thank you for all the kits they are going to sell because of this video. Your reaction after the first strum was the moment for me when I verbally said to myself that's it, I'm going to order one.
I've often thought of getting a Mustang/Jaguar kit as a bit of a project to keep me busy, this kit was much better than I was expecting for the price. Great step by step build and review thanks 👍🏻
Although it's not like making a guitar I am sure I could learn a lot more than I know now about what makes a guitar tick . I LOVE your heartbreaking playing at the end ...ouch!! ..hurts so good man
I really enjoyed this. Thank you. Please understand I mean this as a compliment when I say you remind me in your speech and mannerisms of blokes I knew back in the early Seventies. Cool man!
Hey Dave! On the string alignment (low E and high E not centered), that can often be fixed by loosening the neck screws just a bit, gently pulling the neck sideways until the spacing is good, and then re-tightening the screws. With the gap you have in the neck pocket you should have room; it only takes a tiny movement to adjust it. Also I vote for either no finish, or something that keeps it that same blonde/natural color, because it looks GREAT!!!
Hey Dave, I found your video by accident. Thought it was good right up till your test drive, then I thought it was excellent ! Your axe ripping is the highlight, nice job! Steve in California
I've got an unusual guitar which is ALL scratchplate! The Godin RADIATOR...it's bloody brilliant! I haven't been brave enough to unscrew the mirror lid yet but it's the whole thing!
Awesome! Love this! Looking forward to this series. Don't paint it!! As soon as you pulled the body out before you said "Maybe I shouldn't paint it" I was thinking the same. Cheers!
I've done a couple of thomann kits and been pleasantly surprised with them. The strings supplied are always rubbish, I tend to use them just to check alignment and action then sling them for decent ones. Some people are a bit sniffy about the stock pickups and tuners but I find them ok, you can always upgrade them later.
Great video Dave. How about finishing the body in a Mary Kaye translucent white style to show off the grain of the wood? Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Holy moly Dave, you were very lucky with that body. It’s fantastic. I was really curious about these kits. I could see everything very well and no pout of focus at all. Very interesting cheers 👍
Thanks to Covid19, I'm just as gig-less as anybody at the moment. So I decided that this is the time to restore a '77 P-Bass that was sitting around for quite a while. I currently have no proper workshop, so the vast majority of the work is done on my music room floor as well. Makes me remember a Miles Davis quote: "I do EVERYTHING on the floor!" ;-)
This was a really fun video to watch.. I hope that you record more of your progress as you finish it’s “birth and creation”… As to color..if I were looking to paint it in a distinctive non traditional color.. I’d go with an orange metal flake with both a silver and a purplish blue metal flake.. Imagine the color shifts that would do under stage lighting…. Years ago I saw a custom G&L ASAT painted like that.. It was glorious!
'Few things :- On these kits there tends to be 3 A250K ohm log pots - You might want to change the tone ones to B250k ohm if you want some proper varation on the tone . But if you only play tone full on or full off it won't matter !! The body will paint up easier than stain !! To stain it is the devil's own job because you will need to sand off all the paint preparation that Harley Benton have put on . To see that hold the body at an angle to a light source and you will see it glisten !! . The body is a little on the thin side more like a Squier than a strat in that a fender trem block will be too big for the route by about 5mm !! I know because I tried it !! The pickups themselves are very good and the middle one is RWRP so you will get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 . The head stock is easily shaped with a Junior Hack saw with a metal cutting blade, I downloaded a free template which I printed and taped to the head stock but you can also work with a piece of cardboard that you have used to draw an outline from an existing headstock. If you want an easy shiny but natural look just do 14 thin coats of Tru-Oil on the body .Prep is minimal as is the aroma. Do two coats a day for 2 weeks or less for a satin look. After two weeks further waiting time buff up with car polish , then Dr Duck's axe wax or similar.. Satin finish won't need the carnuba just a good rub over with a clean cloth. This is the easiest least smelly method - Whatever you do there is always the waiting time . Lastly if you do decide to change the pots do not and I repeat do not Sodder them !! Solder them instead. I don't know what is wrong with the Americans on here who keep telling people to get a soddering Iron and sodder everything in sight !! I just hit the esc key when they start all that !! I look forward to see how you get on. I am amazed though that for just £8 more Thomann do the ready made version with choice of fretboard maple or Roseacre and an HSS version for the same price !! But I suspect the pots !!
Yo..Mr. Dave ..Well you sound very chipper...which we are all working on now ..so thanks for giving out a good example ..👍 PS if your shirt is made to ask people ..what it is..it definetly works ! How much ya want for it ? 😊. Rock on ..Mate ..Pal ..Bro ..etc ..😎🎸
Fantastic video mate, and love the playing bit at the end. Gonna buy two of these, one to just stain the other to bust out my engraving gear and see what happens with. Cheers and thanks for the quarantine project!
Any chance of getting more gear reviews? I'd like to rebuild a few squier guitars and could use some guidance on electronics, strings,Amps etc. Love your sound, reminds me alot of David Gilmour.
Wow ,nice kit! Great project, and all playable in one day! I need a cheap bass, maybe I should go that route....Now I'm off to either work on the tuck, or clean the drain. Ugh! whatever doesn't get done today can be done tomorrow because it's Groundhog Day!!!
Clear coat it dark red, keeps the wood and can still be reliced. Check out the Friedman T-types, they look amazing. Great project/content Dave. Take care... :)
Your house reminds me of a guitar shop form the 80's when I started looking, kit everywhere, love it! Was called Grott Guitars in Newcastle. Great content and advice. cheers
Cool! Nice kit guitar. I love kit guitars because you can mod them and personalize them any way you like. As far as finishing goes. I would just sand it, put a matt clear coat on it and change the scratch plate to either black or tortoise shell. That would look killer!
I think you’re a breath of fresh air Dave and an awesome guitar player/musician. You’re quest for detail and accuracy is impressive so why, oh why can’t you pronounce Rory’s name properly. It’s not just you, but I’m hoping you can be the one to fix this. The second g in Gallagher is silent. Galla her. 👍🙂
These HB kits are really awesome. I built 2 strats, 1 tele and 1 SG already. Must say the tele and SG are better that the strat (even with the stock parts, these are great). I have always just slightly sanded down the bodies and gave them a true oil finish (the SG got a burgundy stain first before applying the oil finish).
Only a couple of things to say really. First, from a phone screen it does look like it would have looked wonderful just stained rather than coloured but you can see it better there than we can I guess. Second, beautiful outro. Melancholic but weirdly uplifting. Stay safe in these weird times Dave.
WOW!!! That's a really good sound you got straight away! How exciting...I think I will have to try it myself. I've been looking for a 24fret roasted maple neck and a recessed jack socket. A rare or non existent combination ...why is that ?
Awesome man, enjoyed coming along with you on the build. Try to put this situation into a perspective that benefits you (the positive), for me its a break from the normal chaos which is like a day or two a month to myself. . enjoying sleep in's and a lot of guitar playing, no where to be..take care mate & keep in touch with your friends.
That’s a pretty sweet kit, goes together quite well. That’s the beauty of these they scream customisation, as long as the neck is nice that’s all that matters. Good project for Groundhog Day “Phil, Phil Connors is that you!” Might have to watch the movie again, and again, and again.....😂
It would have surprised me greatly if the kit were of any guitar other than a strat type (as they also have a tele and an SG DIY kit), but what else would Dave build? 🤣 Strats btw are my fav guitar type at the moment, can't stop playing mine...a Harley Benton St-20 HSS that I just love. Cheers Dave! I will be following this build with interest!
You need to do a bit of woodwork on the head stock. Thomann obviously left so much wood on it so that they could avoid copyright by having the owner carve the S-type head stock shape themselves. Just make a paper template from one of your strats then a handsaw and a bit of sandpaper on the jobs done.
I have a partscaster and its got some really thin coats of nitro on it, less than a can of the colour and possibly a third/quarter of a can of clear. It's got a pretty awesome matte/silk finish as I did minimal sanding and in under a year some of the finish is wearing away and it looks awesome. Wish I could attach a picture
I love the Wilkinson vintage style trems that are upgraded a little and they’re like $33 shipped. They work so much better than the fender ones. What about a telecaster shaped headstock. I’ve seen some custom shop strats with them called troublemakers
Damn wish I had a friend that would send me random guitar lol. Always wanted a crack and building epically as I've retro fitted my garage with work benches etc. As for painting I love the effect burning a guitar has especially as the grain on yours looks really nice.
Loosen the neck bolts a little and pull the neck sideways to line up the strings better. Easier to do if screws pass through the holes of the body so can have a bit of play. Then tighten the screws up.
Cheers from NY! Watching you open that box was painful. I kept saying outloud, " Dave get your knife, get a knife already!" LOL. As always enjoyed your vid Dave. Take care man. :)
Dave's commitment to the cause of having an original playstation set up next to a PS2 and a PS3 is not lost on me.
Just shows that a great guitarist can make virtually any guitar sound good - it's all in the fingers ! Great video !
That body is certainly gorgeous Dave. To paint or not to paint, that is the question!! I would use the body cutouts to test different paint and stains to see what would be best. Idea?
Looking forward to the next video's.Great job!! Stay well, stay safe my friend!

I can’t believe I missed this episode. DIY Guitar kit fun fun, I hope you sign that puppy. That’s the way to give a autograph.
Hmm mind clearing up a doubt of mine? I didnt understand, so do we need to solder or not? my english is not the best
I did make a p-bass body from hald a ash log i got from a friend. Came out quite nice. So now i’m thinking of doing it once more and make a strat body as well. Great fun.

true! i just ordered mine, tho i didnt understand one thing, do i need to solder or not? the little claw seems to just clip on so im not sure
@@joaonobre-franco4437 you just need to solder the grounding wire to the trem claw at the back, everything else is already done or just clips in
@@joaonobre-franco4437 Don’t know how you did it but if everything were clip I’d clip the ground/earth wire on the claw as well. No solder needed. :)
@@stevelaferney3579 Ended up cliping it without any issue, still working fine (despite me not practicing for quite a while)

The "Dave-caster"!!!!🎸 Love these project videos buddy... keep up the good work! 😁👍
Check your pots I'll bet they are either all A -log type or a B for the volume and two As for the tone !!
Really enjoyed watching this Dave, can't see how it turns out!
Eddie and Richard on the back wall. Hellz yez!
Great project! Love your videos Dave..
I love the Wilkinson vintage style trems that are upgraded a little and they’re like $33 shipped. They work so much better than the fender ones. What about a telecaster shaped headstock. I’ve seen some custom shop strats with them called troublemakers
Brilliant video 👏
Your smile is the best
Damn wish I had a friend that would send me random guitar lol.
Always wanted a crack and building epically as I've retro fitted my garage with work benches etc.
As for painting I love the effect burning a guitar has especially as the grain on yours looks really nice.
Dave, it’s truly rather amazing - Instant Strat guitar, just add water! ; )
Nice one again, Dave. Cheers
Thank you. :)
Loosen the neck bolts a little and pull the neck sideways to line up the strings better. Easier to do if screws pass through the holes of the body so can have a bit of play. Then tighten the screws up.
Those kit guitars are the best, I made my own strat and it plays as good as any.
Liberon finishing oil, will make it look and feel great, that's what I used, sanded to a high grit.
Oh! A Playstation 1 here! I still playing at tis time, I love it. Also N64!
Cheers from NY! Watching you open that box was painful. I kept saying outloud, " Dave get your knife, get a knife already!" LOL. As always enjoyed your vid Dave. Take care man. :)
