- Dreamy - Erroll Garner in 1964.
Erroll Louis Garner ( 1921 - 1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads.
His best-known composition, the ballad Misty, has become a jazz standard. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ,
Erroll began playing piano at the age of 3. He attended George Westinghouse High School, as did fellow pianists Billy Strayhorn and Ahmad Jamal.
Garner was self-taught and remained an "ear player" all his life he never learned to read music. .
At age 14 in 1937 he joined local saxophonist Leroy Brown. He played locally in the shadow of his older pianist brother Linton Garner and moved to New York in 1944. He briefly worked with the bassist Slam Stewart, and though not a bebop musician per se, in 1947 played with Charlie Parker on the famous "Cool Blues" session. Although his admission to the Pittsburgh music union was initially refused because of his inability to read music, they eventually relented in 1956 and made him an honorary member.
Garner is credited with having a superb memory of music. After attending a concert by the Russian pianist Emil Gilels, Garner returned to his apartment and was able to play a large portion of the performed music by recall. He was also known for his occasional vocalizations while playing, which can be heard on many of his recordings.
He helped to bridge the gap for jazz musicians between nightclubs and the concert hall. Until his death on January 2, 1977, he made many tours both at home and abroad, and produced a large volume of recorded work.
In this recording he is accompanied by Eddie Calhoen on bass and Kelly Martin on drums.
no one ever made a piano sound like this before Erroll Garner. Can be copied but even then not the same. The world lost something very special when Erroll Garner died
I’ve felt this way and felt that it was objective truth since I discovered Erroll Garner. I never knew another person who had known of Erroll Garner, let alone perceived his exquisiteness in playing. Erroll Garner is a true gift of existence.
Just a great musician!!
Although Misty is his most famous song, Dreamy is his most beautiful song. Indeed.. And nobody else has ever played it like him.
Garner is the world's best jazz pianist. No matter whether he could read music or not. So what? He was an instinctive musician, playing by impulse.
I'm 81 in 196o he was my favorite for Misty and dreamy the best still now to me 🎉
my old man once told me:"when i die i wanna go to heaven listening to this song..." here it goes dad...
Valentina Schiavo I totally agree with you. another interesting version is by Earl Grant on his Ebb Tide lp.

Love this♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
How i love errolls many ways of playing dreamy.
He was beyond genius in my book.
Erroll had the most sensitive and God given ability to express beauty and melody with his playing.
God how I love this man's sublime ability.
I am thankful to UA-cam for letting me discover this genius, his playing is just mesmerizing!!
Wonder if you've watched this video about him: ua-cam.com/video/LiUP3NA5GYA/v-deo.html
This guy is just the best i've ever heard. He neither need to read and watch the piano: He and the piano make one. Everlasting wizard!
He is the best indeed among all jazz pianists. His technique of playing the piano approaches that of abssolute pianstic eruditiom.
couldnt read music.. self taught.. and better than ANY of his critics!
I mean Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Earl Hines, Art Tatum, James P Johnson were, among others, all great pianista, but Errol... Ah Errol was unique... Superb! Always.... Great Post!
The sound of a master musician and composer.
Earl Garner what can be said .... His legacy will live on for a long long time
Brilliant with heart and soul
There are no words for this man's artistry. Dreamy is my personal theme song. He is beyond brilliant....and couldn't read one musical note!
I played the piano growing up as a child, but sight reading always let me down and I never thought I was going to go far. Then I came across this guy, a total inspiration who showed that as long as you have the music in you, that’s all that counts. He’s a one-off for sure!
This one never fails to draw a tear from me...
I think this is as good as Misty. Errol had such a melodic sense - his improvisations are compositions in themselves - what a genius
AND Misty is the signature song of the great romantic and ballad singer Johnny Mathis whom we still have among us. Johnny still tours and sings for the people. Talented musicians like Errol come along once in a while and I think we are very blessed to have them. Rest in peace great pianist.
So delicate and sensitive, straight from the heart.
Beautiful piano note✨
I inherited the Erroll Garner album "Other Voices" from my father. This tract is on it and I believe it is my favorite. I just found the CD, Other Voices, on Amazon and purchased it. It is part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you Father, for exposing me to such beauty. May you RIP.
Your father must have been one hep cat.
I would give my soul to the devil to be able to play one tenth as beautifully as this.
Truly a GOD given talent , may his music last for ever . NH USA 5-9-20 .He holds a special please in my vintage LP collection .
what a dream. It is real music,
Just a sheer genius. Such melodic, sensitive playing. Truly gifted. Brian Adams.

Gorgeous. Another one of his compositions I need to learn ! Erroll Garner is the gift that keeps giving.
My old man loved Errol Garner, so I have heard his music in the cradle ! - I´m sure this has contributed greatly to my love of music and to my sense of humor !...
Syncopated perfection
any song by this genius gives me goosebumps. insane
Éste hombre no era de este planeta impresionante
A wonderful cool jazz piece -
This is how I want to die. Not with a bang, but with some jazz, and perhaps a mix cocktail in one hand.
Absolutely magic. 👍
I LOVE THIS SONG!! The first
tme i heard it--I was eighteen in 1959
Great year---The cd or album that it is on- is-OTHER VOICES--misty is on the same cd
O maior pianista de jazz de todos os tempos. Um erudito do piano, apesar de autodidata do instrumento.
So beautiful
These guys can even play in the dark!
awesome as always
Cleat, yes, isn't Errol a wonder? He was given a gift by our creator, knowing how to read sheet music is nice but some of them who can read it can't play it worth a hoot. I love Errol's talent and style. His favorite song of mine is Misty with my favorite singer in the world, Johnny Mathis, singing it. These lovely artists have their place in time but not forever, it's nice to be able to enjoy them while they are here.
wahou!!! thanks a lot fot this video, I love so much Erroll ans especially thins ballad ....
God bless his saoul .
It is simply
heavenly.
🎹 As a lifelong professional pianist, composer and musician, I can say without hesitation that Erroll Garner was the 2nd greatest discovery of my musical life... While it is the opera's of Richard Wagner that take first place. (Go figure!) 🎹
MASTERLY!
this is easily as good as Misty - which became a classic and Dreamy is largely forgotten
Yes JIm is wonderful, is my favorite song by Erroll Garner, is very beautiful.
I love this music !!!
Une pure merveille....
Dreamy.... my favorite ! fm Other Voices LP. Now they have it on CD, an import on Amazon.
thanks
FANTÁSTICA !
Just a great musian
Top music. 👏🏼
They come but once ...
one more time!!!!!!!!
Três grandes pianistas do jazz, Earll Hines, Errol Garner e Oscar Peterson.
One happy piano
Garner and Peterson were, for my taste, milestones, support columns and nobility in the history of the jazz piano. They personified simultaneously a rather reserved character and an expolosive quality which could, and usually did, erupt. It's a real pity the jazz world had to lose them. Now however, there's Eliane Elias. Having heard some of her recordings and seen her combo recently in Munich, I believe she's a worthy successor to them.
Regards,
Horatio Nelson.
Yes! Check out Eliane on the Mingus tune "Peggy's blue skylight".
Gran creador. No lee musica.; pero la expresa maravillosamente
You can find the cd,"Other Voices" at Amazon Music.com! This cd is Erroll`s first and only work with a full orchestra put together by Mitch Miller! Also tracks included with the trio. Ed
is a dream!
Some would point out that Erroll Garner didn't read music. There is no point for that. Sheets of music are unneeded to move the soul.
Erroll is also said to have remarked, "Nobody comes to a concert to watch me read."
Agreed. The human soul requires no technique at all.
Was first published on CBS album under the title of "crème de menthe"
@Alexandria Schiavo, about your Father's heavenly trip, Robert Shaw, the famed choral conductor said that music had a spiritual dimension. No doubt your Father glimpsed this truism through Garner.
Uniek !!!
Prachtig. Droommuziek !!!
to be sixteen at the forest inn ada, ohio
Why is this tune in some recordings called "No more shadows"...... To me it sounds like the same tune....?
