    Thanks for sharing your knowledge/talent. You are a great teacher, so easy to listen to and follow along with. My 13 year old son has an interest in making knives, wooden handles, and different types of sheaths. He would eventually like to sell them. His dad helps him with the metal working, I do woodworking and sewing/knitting as my hobbies so I am trying to help him with the handles and sheaths and your tutorials have been/will be a lot of help to all of us. Since all 3 of us are definite beginners and learning as we go we can use all the help we can find!

    Hi Again. Thank you for your videos, they have inspired me to make the sheaths for the knives I make. I am part way through my first sheath, following your guidance. I do have a question. When you draw round the blade, on the sheath itself then make a mark half an inch wider, for the stitching and glueing; is there a reason why you don’t use the offcut for your welt. At this stage it seems to make sense to use the offcut as it (I believe) should have the same profile as the blade? No criticism, just trying to learn

    Very nice video. Here’s a hint I found a while back that works very well. Instead of drilling my holes, I put a finishing nail in my drill press with a sharpened edge. That makes nice holes without removing any material so that they close up on the stitches. The best of both worlds

    • @brianwhitelaw7483
      @brianwhitelaw7483 3 роки тому +1

      I should have said a sharpened point instead of edge. Finishing nails are not actually perfectly pointed. I just smoothed the point out on my 2 x 72 grinder

    Interesting video. Comments are ; Beveling needs to be done before stitching. Belt loop needs to be sewn on before the body of the sheath. A weep hole needs to be utilized at the point before a complete stitch is done. Otherwise, a very good video.

    The only thing I can add is I always leave a drain hole at the tip of the sheath. Same for Kydex. Also I groove out the inside for the belt loop so the stitches won’t get cut from the blade. Im left handed but every sheath is cross draw. That way my firearm is on the left side. And when I carry a shotgun/rifle it doesn’t wack my knife.

      @@Aleeknives You'd be amazed at the amount of little hints that I catch on your vids.... yes, others make vids as well, but I wouldnt worry about redundancy. I noticed in the background of either the first video or second you had a wicked edge sharpener. How do you like it? I use Japanese wet stones and have excellent results that are hair popping sharp. I have heard that the wicked edge will do the same but my God are they expensive.

    Another great and informative video. Where do you source your leather? I find it is hard to get.

      I used a course 36grit for shaping the leather. Higher grit belts tend to burn it instead of remove material

    I put a strip of leather between the belt loop and the sheath in the place of the stitches, so that there is a better gap for the belt and at the same time it is stronger in the place of the stitches.

    So you don’t do a stitching groove on the back side? Thanks for tips.Most helpful videos I’ve seen.

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 роки тому +1

      I have tried but until you get real good at punching your holes what will happen is that your holes will be in the groove on the front but will not all make it into the groove on the back. sometimes your holes wander a little, if the holes don't all land in the groove it looks like a mistake

      I was given this particular mat. It was used in a quilting shop. You can buy these style mats at hobby lobby, Joans or micheals. They are typically used to cut fabric on
