  • Having a problem with chickens sleeping outside their chicken coop? We tried this one easy method to get our chickens to start sleeping in their chickens coop and it worked in just ONE NIGHT! I am a newbie die raising chickens, we bought 4 copper moran chicks in January. I raised them in our sunroom in a 30 x 16 box from UPS. Used a heat lamp for the first 5 weeks. We're in central Florida and are having a very early Spring. We moved them outside to their new coop at 7 weeks. It took two nights before one of the hens went in at night....chasing the rest of them in. Then the second night 2 hens went in with the remaining two crying outside. Gave them a little coaxing and they went in. Tonight 3 went in by themselves with one left out crying, scooted her in. Hopefully tomorrow night will be a charm and all four will walk in. They love their coop and run. Its 120 sq. ft. My husband built from scratch and its beautiful.

Here I am in South Alabama, worrying that 50 degrees overnight is too cold for my chickens....man, did I miss that mark! You have Polar Chickens, snow bothers them not at all! I will worry less, now. These are tougher birds than I originally thought.

Thank you so much for sharing, I too live in Michigan and it gets pretty cold. I have five hens. Only one goes in the coop at night. The others are very stubborn and no matter what kind of weather it is they refuse to go in the coop at night. Their perch is higher than the door opening. I'm so tickled to try this. Their coop is clean, no bugs or animals.

IT WORKED! My outside perch was higher than the entrance to the coop. I took the perch down and Yep, sure enough all the girls went in the coop. Snow is just around the corner and now I have peace of mind that they will be warm and comfy.

I’ve literally been putting my chickens inside the coop every day. BUTTTT they were raised inside the house for their entire lives and they didn’t know what “night time” was . So now they are trying to learn circadian rhythm. Lol

I just moved my last four outside into their coup. They were a mix of 6 and 7 week old pullets. But I started turning the lights off before the sun went down two weeks before I moved them outside.
Once I moved them outside I closed off the entrance so they couldn't get out. I did that for two days before I let them out. The first night of them being out, the two Barred Rocks went in without issue. But the New Hampshire and Easre Egger didn't. One was on the ground the other up against the roof on a horizontal 2x4.
I put both on the roosting bars and they all have gone in everyday since I had to put them in manually!

lol Nutty chickens. Mine wouldn't go in their coop because they don't hit the hay until about 5 minutes before dark and they were skeerd of the monsters hiding in the dark coop. lol I put a little LED inside on a small battery and they went right in. Killed the light after a week and they've been fine since.

I've been having the same problem. I'm going to start to implement your suggestions as soon as their new coop is finished - should be next week. We are in the South, so we don't have the bitter cold that you have but , right now, I am having to coop my ladies in our greenhouse and , of course, they are pretty much destroying everything. We have a little coop that I put in there but they are no longer interested in that except to lay eggs.
Now, I'm getting excited about their new condo. Thanks for the help.

Salt water in small containers will keep your water from freezing. Tiny water bottles work. Super glue lid so salt can't get in the fresh water

i built a coop and don't have any roosts in the run yet, but my girls want to sleep on the dirt in the run. so I've been picking them up and putting them in the coop and locking them in, because winter is around the corner and i didn't want them building bad habits. plus, I too am worried about predators spotting them at night. This is the 4th night I've had them, and the 2nd night I've put them in the coop. I guess time will tell!

Genius! I've been picking up my 14 week old Orpingtons off the perch in their run, carrying them to their coop, and then lighting the way in front of them with a flashlight up into the coop every night x 2 weeks. After watching your video, I went out before dusk, took the perch down, and like magic 🪄 ✨️ they go in on their own now. I put the perch back up in the morning and everyone is happy. Thank you.

Mine used to do that 😂 And the bugs they are talking about are Mites but those are a summer time issue not winter and also diatomaceous earth fixes that. But yours are like mine were it’s the fight for dominance everybody wanting to be up high. I did the Deep Bedding Method of hay straw leaves in layers bedding like Joel Salatin does and there was no issue with cold ground then. I have a Hut at one of my farms in upper peninsula WI (Apostle Islands) and if I can get up there and find some help to move it I’m having the building repurposed for mt new flock. It’s a whole tiny house for them! I’ll have to get it winterized a little but it will be good. Gonna get an electric door on it also. But been trying to get up there 4 yrs .. hard to do without a cabin to go to.

It could be there isn't enough roosting space for your flock ... Books say 8 inches per bird but 16 inches is better for big heritage birds

We have 5 chickens we got in april. They have been outside in the coop since they were 8weeks old. They free range during the day, and they insist on roosting at night on top of the run. They have roost bars in the coop really high, but every night, we have to go out and get them off the peak of the run. So frustrating
Dont know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • @marcdc6809

with many chickens together in a coop they prefer to have the roosting bars at different hights, so there's hierarchy, somehow chickens have weird politician brains where the dominant ones really suffer if they don't have it better than the rest and the rest doesn't really care, let 'm have it...
I felt a bit sorry for them not having their top bar, maybe add a platform, where they can sit on, but sleeping they still prefer while sitting on a bar...

My run has nothing in it, since I just built it. My 8 black australorps are 6 weeks old and not only don't go in at night, they don't ever go in on their own during the day. At night, they go under the coop, inside the run, which goes against everything I've read, which says they naturally want to go to the highest spot.
I'm thinking about temporarily moving their food into their coup to force them to at least get used to going into their coop on their own to get food. .

I have a similar situation with 4 birds I just bought. They're sleeping outside under the coop or in the run area, on the dirt! So my idea is to lock them in the coop every night and let them out in the morning. that way i don't have to put food and water in the coop. did you solve your issue?

Welp, I gotta try this. Got a week long trip planned in just 14 days and I’m so worn out putting all 16 girls one by one in the coop every night. I have installed a large corner of roosting bars on one side of their run that they all try to perch on at night. Gonna remove those tomorrow to see if this helps. Stubborn little rotten butts

I have never understood this issue some people have. My chickens, (granted I got them as adults) they march into the coop from the very first day we got them. We had a tiny crappy enclosure (barely a coop), they packed themselves there without any issue. We built a big nice coop, they still march to the roosting area in the evening without prompting them at all. I thought it was instinct. Isn't it??

On our fifth batch & they’re the first that won’t use their coop. Could be because pops got a turkey to protect them (not recommended, btw) & they just follow his lead. These were already grown & using a coop when we acquired them.
