      You’re welcome and I’m glad there’s at least two of us doing this now! I’ve had some real skate fit issues over the years and had both of my hips replaced due to arthritis before 41 years old (Thanks hockey). Let’s keep in touch. It sounds like we may have info that we can bounce off each other. I’m going to be doing a BladeTech steel review soon. Should be here by the end of next week. I’ll be coming at it from the ankle of joint health instead of performance. Oh and your Warrior LX Pro video was good, but I was surprised by your results. I might have to give it a second chance.

      @@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews yes, I think I remember you mentioning you having to deal with arthritis too. Super lame, but that’s how it goes. And yes. I’m really curious about the BladeTech. I got the DLC version. I’m currently using a pair of bootleg DLC Step Steel from the Leafs equipment room so it should be a good comparison since I had them both profiled the same. And once my AS4 pro wears out, I’ll take another look at the LX and the FT4. My only two complaints about the AS4 pro is the lively blade (can sometimes make it a little challenging to receive hard passes) and the P29 curve. It’s not quite as tall as a regular P92 or W03, so pucks sometimes skip over the top. But that’s minor stuff.

    Nice review. I like your CCM custom skate had ordered my first ever pair of custom skates….Bauer Hyperlites. Pure hockey measured me at a fit 3 8 and 8.25 so we went with the 8.25 for both feet. Changed the coloring to a stealth black and grey. After waiting almost two months the skates arrive. Go pick them up and immediately the right felt perfect and the left felt like they used a fit 2 toe cap. You could tell visually looking at it that it was narrower. Measuring it later confirmed it. I was told to skate in them and see how it went. After two skates and killing my pinky toe I went back to pure hockey. Then I noticed the toe can issue on both skates. The toe cap is not set in nice and tight like the standard skates you buy off the shelf. These $1300 skates look like I was given an 8 boot and the toe cap was pulled forward to crest the .25 spacing. Not a happy camper with Bauer.
    I am now waiting to see what happens. The skates were shipped back to Bauer. I told pure hockey that if Bauer cannot fix it properly I do not want these skates. Very disappointed with Bauer in the fit and finish and sloppy work. They look amazing but upon a closer look these are not as advertised. Shame shame Bauer. First and last time I do custom of any brand.

      Sorry you had that experience but I’m actually pretty confident you’ll be taken care of by both Bauer and Pure Hockey. Unfortunately this is why I usually tell people not to go with custom skates because it’s hard to get them correct the first time unless you have a really easy foot which in that case why would you be getting custom skates? Good luck and let me know how it goes.

      I hope they will correct it. I went with customs just because I never had a pair and wanted the experience…thinking it would have been different. I wanted to have a skate that was mine/my style and different which is why I went custom too. I’m sure pure hockey will do the right thing. They are good guys and I hope Bauer sees their errors and corrects it. If not I’ll take a credit and get one off the shelf. 🤷🏻

    Thanks for these skate videos. If I'm struggling to fit widthwise in a FIT 3, I currently have an 8.5 fit3 vapor 3x that's been baked and my foot is still killing me ( was scanned as a 7.5 fit 3...). I could also use more ankle volume too. Eying a custom CCM ribcore at the moment. I would go with TRUE but I'm worried about durability. Do you think Custom is my only option if a Fit 3 isn't working out?

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  2 роки тому +1

      First off thanks for the comment. I’d recommend trying the Hyperlite as they do fit wider than the 3X to me. If that still doesn’t work for you then I am afraid that custom is your only option but I would avoid True for durability and my own opinion on how they fit. I’ve owned two pairs of the custom ones. Right now, ccm is making the best custom skate if you’re willing to spend the cash. I think you’re on the right track going for the Ribcor.

    Your analysis of this skate is spot on in this video. Now that you have owned both the ultrasonic and the hyperlite - which skate model between the two provides more forward flex - in your own opinion ? I own the hyperlite now and do notice the newly engineered injected eyelets to help but was wondering if an ultrasonic would provide even more forward flex than the hyperlite?…. I’d like a little more than what I am getting on the hyperlite and am not willing to drop eyelets….

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  2 роки тому

      Hey man, thanks for the comment! So I think boot fit might be the first thing to look at. If you fit an Ultrasonic, that skate will give you more power, forward flex and foot wrap than any non-custom Vapor skate. What you should know, is the forefoot width and toe cap volume of the ultrasonic is less than the Hyperlite. If you have a wider higher volume foot like me, I’d be hesitant to go to the ultrasonic at all. However if they fit I believe they do a better job giving you what you’re looking for. The hyper light do fit well but they’re not nearly as stable from a lateral standpoint. When other skate that I’ve had a lot of experience with that you might consider is the CCM Ribcor. It’s the most underappreciated skate with the best forward flex on the market. The other two models of CCM skate are too stiff for me, but the Ribcor and ultrasonic are similar in stiffness with the ultrasonic being a little stiffer. Hope that helps!

    • @mattweber1128
      @mattweber1128 2 роки тому

      @@mongillohockey thanks it does help. I was in a 70k before the hyperlites. Maybe should have tried the 100k. Do you think 100k would provide more forward flex than the new ultrasonics? Cool thing about CCM is 90 day no questions asked return policy…. I’ve never tried on the 100k only seen it in a pro shop and it seemed very stiff (boot squeeze test) unlike the 70/80k of the past. I may have to try 100k and or ultrasonics/mach1 to see if they can provide a bit more forward flex…

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  2 роки тому

      @@mattweber1128 So the new 100K is a bit different than the 80Ks of the past. You obviously know about the 100ks being a one piece boot, but it feels like a softer flexing FT4 pro Jetspeed now. I still think the Ultrasonic might give you a smoother forward flex as long as the toe cap doesn’t bother you. I actually feel like the Ultrasonic could be the fastest skates I’ve ever worn. That said, I can’t help feeling like all CCM skates are generally more comfortable than Bauer.

      Hey there thanks for the comment. I found your comment regarding ankle impingement on eyelets interesting. I have the same issue bilaterally but worst on the left. I’ve created a pair of Frankenstein socks - I used silicone seam sealer to fix bunga pads in place over the upper slope of my ankles. It’s flexible and a great adhesive - the pads stay where I need them.
    But that got me to thinking about heel slip, which is always an issue with my skates. So I applied a thin coat of silicone on both the inside and outside of the heel of the socks, emphasis on thin. It felt a little weird at first, kind of cold and slimy, but that goes away and what you’re left with is heel lock which is literally 100% without adding anything bulky or intrusive inside the boot.
    The lengths we go to, right?

    I think the reason why the 2x pro skate had volume issues is because of the asymmetrical taper from the injected lacing system, I believer Bauer tweaked the lacing system on the current gen skates.. My son has owned two pairs of the Hyperlite skates over the past 12 months. Right at the 6 month of skating in both pairs the plastic molded eyelets have broken.
    He loves these skates and when the first pair broke we had to urgently purchase a replacement pair because where he was playing at the time didn’t have a repair shop. Luckily we have an amazing equipment repair shop close to where we live and they were able to take off the plastic eyelet and put in regular eyelets. His second pair broke this morning. Off to the repair shop again. We’ve had to invest way more money into these skates than anyone should have to. Skates were almost $1000 per pair and the repair is $100 for each side that needs repair. Buyer beware. If you are hard on your skates these might not be the right ones for you.

      This is an rare, but not unheard of problem with injected eyelets. I think in general I'd tell the average person not to worry about it, but there is a reason why many pro guys get traditional eyelets when they do custom skates. Of course this is no consolation to you. Sorry that happened.

      Hey there, thanks for the really important comment! If I could get one skate fitting-related point across to everyone, it'd be to never assume one model of skate fits the same from one year to the next. I've been burned by that a couple times. I even have a recent subscriber who bought some Ribcors, received them, never tried time on and sent them back. He then got the chance to try another pair of Ribcors on and then bought them again. That seems to happen frequently.

      can you explain further how the fit is different? Is the fore foot/ toe cap area wider? I bought a used pair of hyperlite skates 7.5 fit3 and I used a shoe boot width stretcher and heat gun, and was able to widen them enough to accommodate the bunion on the side of my big toe with out any rubbing issues which I was not able to do successfully with a pair of 3x pros

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  11 місяців тому

      @@jeffgeckler9248 Hi there, so it appears that skate manufacturers are constantly trying to improve their skates, which is obvious information. That said, one thing they have a tendency to do, is tweak fit by reducing or increasing volume and or length. For example, I know two people who when from the Hyperlite to the Hyperlite 2 and noticed that the Hyperlite 2 feels shorter. Bauer will not confirm that. So to your question, it could be forefoot width as in the case between the Ultrasonic and the Mach or the length between this year’s and last year’s Hyperlite. I even noticed a tighter forefoot width on the FT6 pro compared to my FT4 Pro. Let me know if you have any follow ups.

    Great videos, keep up the good work on your channel fantastic! Id like like to know if you would consider your fit on these "perfect" if there is such a thing. I was scanned for a 10 fit 1 and my toes do not touch my caps. When i try on a 9.5 fit 1 my toes touch the caps, could maybe wear them if performance was of utmost importance but I am pressing my luck with enough volume on 9.5 fit 1. Do your toes brush the end of the toe caps standing straight up and down and then pull off when you bend your knees/ie hockey skating position in your stated scanned 8 Fit 3? Just curious on how accurate the Bauer new fit system really is....thanks.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  2 роки тому

      Hey man, thanks for the view and comment! So, the short answer is no, these don't fit perfect. I don't think such a thing exists in skates, sticks or any other piece of gear. What I will say, is their the best fitting NON-CUSTOM skates I've tried in recent years. For me, depth is the issue. No one makes skates deep enough for my heels and instep. That said, I haven't been able to find my size to try in CCM's new fitting system. Also, my toes don't touch the ends of the toe caps and I wouldn't personally want them to. Even in my custom lengths (7 3/4 left and 8 right), as the skates get tighter, the better they need to fit and they never do. I'd rather have them a bit long than compromise heel lock, foot wrap forefoot width issues, etc. With all of that said, I've found that this generation of the Bauer foot scanner has been accurate and I'm one who has gotten custom skates from them. Since I know my size, I can tell if something is wrong. What I've seen is that you want to be scanned barefoot. It seems to produce a different size if you wear socks. Keep that in mind. Also, there might be a user error issue in some cases. I've seen a store associate mess up what should be a pretty straight forward process.

      Thank you for your comments and questions! I personally don’t think even with the new Bauer fit system that there’s a current Bauer skate that’s as wide or has as much volume as a Nexus skate. Look at it this way. The Bauer Fit 3 is the equivalent of a Nexus “D” width. Also, the Hyperlite has more forefoot width and volume than the Supreme Mach skates. Additionally, the Hyperlite has a tighter heel than the Mach. If you want more volume and something more closely aligned to the Nexus skate, you should consider the CCM ASV Pro Supertacks. You might also get away with the FT6 Pro Jetspeed with its slightly less volume.

    I wear a 8W in CCM (100K Pro and FT4 Pro). Bought the Hyperlite Fit 3 in size 8 and 7.5. 8's were snug and fit fine for the most part, but seemed a bit lengthier than the CCM's by about 1/4 an inch. I played one game and they felt really good for the most part.
    The 7.5's arrived in the mail this morning, and the length was much better, as I was able to feather the toecap. They were also snug but felt better as they settled in after wearing them for 15 minutes. One thing I wanted to note is that when I pulled out the foot beds on both skates, the 8's had a size 8.5 foot bed and the 7.5's had a size 8 foot bed. I thought this was kind of weird, but I guess it makes sense. So I guess I will probably end up keeping the 7.5's and returning the 8's.

      @mongillohockey  Рік тому

      Hey there, I’m wondering if you don’t have compatible steel for the Tuuk Edge holders. You may need to upgrade to LS4 steel at a minimum. The old LS2 steel (if that’s what you’re trying to use) was the steel used prior to the implementation of the holders with the trigger system. And yes, the carbon steel is not only expensive but also poopy.

    How do these perform up around the top eyelet? I bought 1000$ pair of 1xLEs a few years back and they are the worse skates I ever bought. The injection molded eyelets rubbed a hole THROUGH my tongue. I have skinnier ankles and I'm a forward aggressive skater so I basically have to wear bunga pads all around my ankles to skate.
    I emailed Bauer about it a month after the 1 year warranty was up and they basically told me to pound salt.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  2 роки тому

      Sounds like a Bauer thing to do. Well, you can rest assured these Hyperlite skates don’t fit like your old 1X LEs. They even fit slightly different than the recent 2X Pro. Regarding the top eyelets, I haven’t had any real damage to the tongue but I also lace outside in on the top eyelets. I get better forward knee bends that way. I also have to wear gel bunga pads on my ankle bone, but that’s not the skate’s fault. What I will mention if you have thinner ankles is that the top of the boot flares out towards the top. This may result in reduced lateral support. Depending on your foot shape, you could be better suited in a CCM Jetspeed of Ribcor 100K. The quality is pretty much the same between Bauer and CCM now, which is really good. TRUE skates durability still isn’t quite there.

      Hey man, I haven’t tried the Hyperlite 2 skates on yet. That said, I can give you a little second-hand feedback from two of my friends who own them and came from the original Hyperlites. First off, the Hype2s are an upgrade in padding and the tongue. Secondly, both of my friends feel the Hype2s are tighter than the original in the length department. The other thing is that neither person was crazy about the new holders and one of my friends swapped them out. The feedback was that the new holders are stiff and that if you have leftover steel from your Bauer Tuuk Edge holder, that steel is NOT compatible with the new Powerfly holders. That’s about what I can tell you for now. Hope that gives you stuff to think about. My recommendation as always is to order from a place that allows returns.

    • @mongillohockey

      Fit 3 in Bauer is definitely wider than the EE Jetspeed. That said, CCM have a new fitting system for the Jetspeed and Ribcor line that incorporates not only width but the more import volume of your foot. I haven’t tried that new fitting system yet but at the end of the day it’s likely an improvement over the old system. The system isn’t in place for the supertacks line as far as I know. In general the vapors have a wider feel to them over the Jetspeed, especially in the forefoot. All that said, the Ribcor skate may be the best medium between the two. They’re a nice design. Kinda like a Jetspeed with more room in it.

      @mongillohockey  4 місяці тому

      Hey there, I totally understand where you're coming from. Here's some things to consider. Yes, I think these Hyperlites and the new Hyperlite 2 skates are worth it. Just know that the new Hyperlite 2 skates fit slightly shorter than the original Hyperlite. I also think that all three models of CCM skates are not only more durable than anything Bauer is currently producing, but they're more comfortable (This is obviously subjective). That said, I think on-ice performance with Bauer boots feels better than CCM. I think in your case I'd avoid TRUE skates, too. If you're 50 and have been skating on traditional boots you might be uncomfortable with how they force you to skate unless your technique is super good. Now that we have that out of the way, go onto Sidelineswap.com and start looking around for one of these models in your size. If you don't have an account, create one. It's free and one of the best sites to find used gear. One thing I need to stress is that you need to be 100 percent sure of your size. This will require you to go get your foot scanned by a local hockey shop if you have one. You don't want to risk buying used skates since the Hyperlites or anything else will not fit like your current skates. Once you're sure of your size, brand and model, go onto Sidelineswap.com and pick out a used pair to save a bunch. Good luck!

      My experience with lace bite is that it’s one of two things. Either the felt tongue wore out leaving you with little padding or you never had a skate with enough heel depth in the first place. I had 2x pros and they are the worse skates I have ever worn they felt like wobbly cinder blocks so I just got a pair of supreme machs and they are close to the old school feel and no wobble and feel like the best pair I ever had the nexus 8000’s.

      Totally agree. I just tried the Machs on two days ago. They feel similar to the Ultrasonic if not a little more comfortable. The wrap or the supreme boots are just better if they fit.

      I bought a pair of 2X’s when they came out and they felt comfy on my feet off the ice. I tried to play with them but they just felt ”clumsy” and ”inaccurate” on the ice for the lack of a better word. Felt like I forgot how to skate..
      Before that I had APX2 for 5+ years until they completely gave in. I absolutely loved them. Now I’m thinking about buying a pair of hyperlite 1 or hyperlite 2 perhaps. Do you guys think I would like them? Or would I be better off trying a pair of Machs for example.

      Strange right? At least they’re fitting you.

      @@mongillohockey I have the pinch from the tongue but only on the left side. Other than that, they are great.

      @@idkau I'm wondering if I'd notice it too. I actually have to use gel Bunga pads on my ankle bones, so I'm probably not feeling it even though it's there.
