  • Welcome to the WeekendFrontier! Water is life. Enjoy the natural views of a Red-tailed Hawk visiting a watering hole that is fed by a rare natural spring and found in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. The hawk stayed at this water tank for 30 minutes! What a great opportunity to observe this animal in it’s natural habitat! Did you see those talons??!! Notice it’s large, stocky build, broad, rounded wings, rust-colored tail and white chest, these are the distinguishing features we used to make our identification. Desert National Wildlife Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge, outside of Alaska, in the United States. It’s comprised of more than 1.5 million acres- six mountain ranges and valleys, seven distinct life zones, and some 34 natural springs that provide a year-round source of water and attracts wildlife from near and far. How do you find water in the desert? The Nuwuvi know, through many generations they have acquired a deep knowledge of water and resources found here. Nuwuvi culture teaches all of us to treat this place with respect and strive to keep it in balance. The mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management and, where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. Is nature conservation important to you? What do you want to pass down to future generations? If more people were connected to the land, the world would be a better place.
