  • Northern Mockingbirds. Love them or hate them?
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”- Harper Lee
The Northern Mockingbird seems to be one of the United States more beloved songbirds; as, it's the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.
The song of the mockingbird is actually a medley of the calls of many other birds, insects, frogs, and even mechanical noises. Each imitation is repeated a couple times before another song starts. A mockingbird may have 30, 40 or even 200 songs in its repertoire. When the screen goes black listen to see how many different songs this lonely male warbled and whined the whole night through in search of a mate. What do you hear?
