  • In some cases, American farmers aren't able to or allowed to repair the equipment they own. Right to repair laws are aiming to change that - and may have other implications. Barry Peterson has more.

The problem with appliances is they are junk when they leave the factory. Farm equipment should and often does last for decades.

In Russia we have passed LAWS AGAINST PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE! Everything manufactured and built must be designed to last, function, remain reusable, DIY repairable, DIY maintainable, DIY trouble-shootable AS LONG AS THEY EXIST EVEN IN THE FIELD! They should be built to last for 10,000 years for I am an engineer and I knew of alloys and other engineering materials that can last for as long as they exist!

@@darthvader5300 it's the computer systems primarily. Circuit boards become obsolete before the machine actually wears out. It's not unusual to find a 50 year old refrigerator sitting in the back of someone's barn and plug it in to find it still working. All mechanical components, made in America. Today my friend most of the parts are made in China. Your leader there should be wise to learn the mistakes of America and other countries and steer clear of doing business with the Chinese. Their first order of business is to decimate your economy and bleed you dry like a parasite.

I was told that our local john deere dealer gets $200 per hour labor. Big savings to repair equipment themselves instead of calling a dealer.

I purchased a big John Deere tractor brand new in 2004. It has no computers in it and I fix everything that breaks. I would love to upgrade to a new one but will not buy anything with a computer that I am not allowed to access. It is all about money. Corporations now have a perfect tool to create a monopoly and keep all the money to themselves.

Not to mention companies like Apple do not sell parts, and sues anyone that does. Newer versions of Apple products permanently brick themselves should the electronic serial number of any of its parts change.

What a great story and the implications are huge. Industries and their outlets (retail stores in many instances) must also change in order for this movement to become meaningful.
I recently purchased a new cell phone. The phone I replaced I had for 7 years. It worked beautifully, but Verizon and LG stopped providing firmware updates for the phone so it was increasingly more difficult to rely on. So I was forced to replace a perfectly good and operational phone. The Verizon retail experience--while generally very good, featured some 'shaming' that I had such an old phone. No one every asked my did the phone generally work well.
The retail and customer point of use model will need to be remodeled to include a method whereby the customer can easily and fully upgrade the firm ware in these devices (tractors to phones) to keep the device operational and 'modern'. Changing the point of use model will be the challenge, not making it all work.

Super important matter - I understand the genuine sentiment of the farmers in this regard. Technology provides much in the way of benefits, but must be accessible, efficient, in must never impede progress, but promote it. Farmers are, by the nature of their work, "hands on" people. We should take care to preserve this part of their profession, and I would say, even culture. We all could do with a bit of "hand on" philosophy in this World as it will empower all of us and render us more capable. With warmest thanks to all farmers for all the good they provide to so many.

John Deere is the worst at controlling who what and when a machine is repaired. Greed is the green eyed monster. Case IH is the farmers advocate letting them decide but not abandoning them when they're needed. Give respect to America's farmers, nobody works without them. You can be carnivore or a vegetarian, but it's the American farmer who fuels everyone. Remember they don't get it done without our oil field and refinery workers.

Barry cast to wide of a net here.
Let me try to explain this, as a small farmer.
My biggest piece of equipment is a Combine.
They're $2.6 million dollars to $5 million each.
If mine breaks down, I have to hire a OVERSIZED LOAD
trucking company to haul it to, and from the Dealership.
    $5,000.00 each way.
Because they don't offer "at farm services".
Once at the dealer's place it can take from 6 days, to 6 months
to fix my combine. Now, YES I can rent one of his used ones,
but that more trucking, at $5,000.00 each way.
Now picture me holding a tablet.
I buy a chunk of software that says which of the 600 censers/readers
is faulty, or maybe just covered in dust. (and no I'm not kidding)
Dust on a reader, cost me $18,000, and 2 weeks use, 3 years ago.
Now I turn on the tablet, and POOF I have to dust off a reader.
Total time? 15 minutes. Cost? $3,000.
    See the difference?
I'm not gonna be Jeff Bezos here.
I just want to feed and cloth my kids,
and send em to Collage so they can do better then me.
    Isn't that what America is?

Plug, play and throw away has become part of our culture. However it is more complicate than meets the eye. To self repair the item must be repairable. That means replacing printed circuit assemblies with more expensive hardwire assemblies which are more expensive to make, mainly due to wiring errors. The right is not of much value if the item is not designed to be repairable

The issue is "who is then responsible" as many repairs affect pollution control and like many cars people will bypass them. Congress should give everyone right to repair and responsibility for all fines if it fails pollution standards regardless of who they claim repaired it. Ok, what if I have company repair it. Fine, with letter of certification that it was correct and tested showing results. Built heavy trucks for many years and by passing EPA mandated requirements then finding it caused other issues and expecting warranty coverage was major.
