      Well, the point is that anyone can detect those problems, if it wasn't him someone would eventually discover it, in general, when anyone call him "a random guy" that discovered this is to showcase the power of open source, it took them years to be able to pull this stunt, a lot of social engineering to try and pass an intentional exploit, and it took nearly no time for it to get discovered and patch.
      On the other hand windows is patched daily for exploits like this one.

      I don't think we got particularly lucky: Linux's most package nature makes that everybody can constantly watch over any code at any time. The fact it was discovered fast (and accidentally) may have been lucky, but considering Debian and RHEL based distros always lag several months to years behind (voluntarily, for stability), we still would've had a lot of time before this backdoor would be deployed on most servers and computers.
      And as the Linux community are for the most part tinkerers, especially the rolling release/bleeding edge enjoyers, as they all get the latest package, they could immediately tinker with the program and at least 1 other person would have found something suspicious, just like this Microsoft engineer and would've reported it.
      So I don't think we got lucky in finding the backdoor as much as we got "lucky" to find it as soon as that.

      @@rigierish3807 Ricing, configuring your desktop and monitoring CPU cycles are very different things. Arch users might be tinkerers, it doesn't mean they know what impact each operation must have on their CPU and in what circumstances. And looking at the source code of cryptic compression algorithms, (especially the human unreadable binary blobs inside the test cases) isn't something even Gentoo users do for fun. Besides, the backdoor specifically only deployed itself on a server environment, so it would have zero impact on regular Linux systems. That's why I think backdoor is so brilliant.

    • @rigierish3807
      @rigierish3807 Місяць тому

      @@temari2860 Right, "tinkerers" has a specific meaning and wasn't the correct word to describe the kind of Linux users I was talking about, my bad. What I meant was "advanced" or "knowledgeable users".
      And when I say it would've been found by somebody else eventually, I don't mean _anybody_ in the Linux community. But the fact that this specific community is filled with pretty knowledgeable people and who can read code, with on top of that the fact a lot of code most Linux system rely on is open source, I genuinely think it was only a matter of time before someone else would've found this backdoor.
      I mean, let's not ignore the reason the person found the backdoor and reported it was because he found the execution part to take oddly too long, 0.5 seconds too much, to be precise. I've seen a lot of example of people obsessed with any program taking even a tenth of a second too long to execute (assuming they were supposed to be fast to execute, like under a second).
      So I could very well see another Linux user or programmer who knows what he's talking about doing the same things and ending up finding and reporting it, which would eventually lead to the backdoor being discovered.
      Now I don't want to diminish the ingenuity (from what I know) of the backdoor, but to consider it was purely based on luck and not even partially based of the fact Linux has a special community and has a lot of open source code isn't giving Linux much credit for what it is and can do.
      Either way, at the end of the day, it's just speculations and we are still grateful it was discovered.

      Linux mint is fine in my experience. The other guy might be worried about Canonical or Microsoft, but Linux Mint removes some of the things people find controversial about Ubuntu, like snaps. Mint comes with proprietary video drivers installed which some people dislike, but it lets you switch to the open source Nouveau drivers for nvidia cards by pressing a button if this bothers you. And it's not even a concern if you're using integrated graphics or an amd card. Something like gentoo or arch might be better if you want a distro that's more of a blank slate for full customization and you're comfortable with command line, and know the terminology and the differences between pipewire/alsa/pulseaudio/jack or xorg/wayland. Mint has sensible enough defaults if you're not going for a customized twm setup or trying to compile all your packages from source for a 3% performance boost.

Google doesn't want to do this, because they're so reliant on ad revenue. Linux is too fragmented to shine. They would need to consolidate the million different versions and put all the configuration into the UI for it ever to become a mainstream OS. I've been messing around with Linux since the 90's and it still is not a viable operating system for any real work.

      @@MAGAMAN I don't think so, because mostly distro out there supports all software that is available for Linux. Ive never seen a problem to run software regarding fragmentation of Linux. Still availability of industrial standard software is considerable issue.

    I hope that they will adjust that stupid security chip requirement. I have laptops that would have a hard time, laptops that are very usable.

    After virtualising many Linux distributions, I'll be ready to properly switch to Ubuntu or even Linux Mint.

    XZ is why you don't run testing branches, and Beta's it only effect Testing branches on Linux Distro and those running Arch which should be reading their code anyway and checking it all. Fedora 40+ is still Beta testing, Debian sid was only the testing branches and as for company servers safety they shouldn't be running unested branches of Linux anyway because of up time stability. Which is why I use Fedora 39 currently not the Beta of 40 I always give a new update 6 month to get through the verified wall of trust and testing. May I add that it was that testing that discovered the bug.
