Written by the great Laura Nyro, who also wrote Eli's Coming that was covered by Three Dog Night, among many others. BST, led by the powerful voice of David Clayton Thomas, were a horn based band that had several hits in the 70s, this as well as You've Made Me So Very Happy and my personal fave Spinning Wheel. Another great group for you to dig into.
Laura Nyro is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Wrote/sang several great songs covered by The 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night and Barbara Streisand.
"I can swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell." Boy, is he in for a surprise! Classic song. Enjoyed watching you react to this one. It's definitely unique!
A+ review. A Master Class. The more philosophy a song is embedded with, the deeper you always go to bring it out and unravel it. I went to a bar many years ago with some friends, and although we didn't know it ahead of time, it was karaoke night. I was looking through the book and found this song, which I knew. I already had the record and CD long before. (1 beer + 1 beer = me putting in my name.) I am a decent singer, but not an expert one. I figured that I knew the song well enough that I could imitate the singer and get through it. It really takes a lot of energy to sing this song and sound anything like the original. I could see people were enjoying it, but to my great surprise, when the song ended the crowd of maybe fifty people erupted in a thunderous applause. The karaoke guy told me he couldn't remember anyone ever singing it. It's possible many did not know the song by the title, or had never heard it before. I had 15 minutes of fame, and I thought better of singing anything else that night. 🍺🍺🎤
This is what came out of the radio when I was a kid. Then they’d play The Supremes and then maybe the Stones. We were so lucky. I love seeing my music through others eyes. 💜
Ow wow, this is a real treat. Have loved this song since I was a kid because my dad loved them. Their song Spinning Wheel is also great. Thanks for this JMBOY!🤘
"And When I Die" is a song written by American singer and songwriter Laura Nyro. It was first recorded by the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary in 1966. Nyro released her own version on her debut album More Than a New Discovery in February 1967. I really prefer her version of the song, especially because she wrote it.
This song always reminds me of a Broadway musical production that you're watching in your mind. BST always created visuals with their music. "Spinning Wheel" is another great BST experience.
"Fun on a bun", I gotta use that! Thanks JMBoy! I was 8 yo when this song was released, and it still gives me chills. David Clayton Thomas' vocals are so down to earth and heartfelt. More BS&T!
B.S.&T. came out in 1968, a few months before Chicago. Both groups had Horns and great vocals. This song had a HUGE impact on many people's thoughts about the after life. I first suggested this song a while ago, my favorite from them.... "You've Made Me So Very Happy" Great choice, again
Yes this musical structure is definitely fun..lol...I was watching your expression during each stand-up 😁... It certainly is a deep dive into the mystery of death..and faith...each night I pray to God and Jesus for my wretched soul and the people around the world whether I know them or not...we are in need of grace to enter so many... Thanks for your reaction... 🌿🌿🌿
Great song! Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. They had a lot of great songs such as "Spinning Wheel", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "God Bless The Child", "Hi-De-Ho", "Lucretia MacEvil", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me" etc.
The Hubble and Webb telescopes have yet to discover the Pearly Gates or Neon sign for that theme park in the sky somewhere they call Heaven.... Keep looking, got to be there someplace, after all it's Gods House..
I have always been certain that the after life we experience will be exactly like the before life we lived. If you can remember what happened to you for billions of years before you were born... Expect the same in your afterlife.
I was into the martial arts since the '60s, and in Bruce Lee's biography that his widow Linda authored in the mid-'70s, she said that this was Bruce's favorite song. She found that ironic since he died so young.
As mentioned written by the incomparable Laura Nyro, David tells a story about how Laura was dating the bass player for the band, one night she brought pizza to practice and asked if David would like to hear some of her songs, sat down at the piano and played this song, Elis Coming, and Stone Soul Picnic, and blew him away
My big Bother came home on leave from the Navy. Bought this album for me for Xmas. Been believing in when I diei and Hi-dee-ho, since I was 10 years old. Maybe why I am a 64 year old vagabond. There are recordings where they merge the two songs.
So David Clayton Thomas had one of the most recognizable voices in rock n roll. Their music was so clearly influenced by southern gospel and blues, their storytelling is hymnal and prose worthy. While this may be your introduction to B, S and T, I can assure you their sound influenced many other bands, such as Chicago, Yes and The Doobie Brothers. The great thing about music is that it’s the most enjoyable and entertaining form of education in studying the history of both the human heart and the human condition. I was blessed to have been raised by parents who thought Blood, Sweat and Tears was as important for all eight children to experience as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. That was in 1970, I was around ten and my parents were in their early fifties. As the product of that parenting thought experiment, I can recommend it. ❤
I think this came out around the year I was born. When I was young I would confuse them and Chicago lol. Spinning Wheel is also a great song. Also I haven’t seen anyone taking on Barry Manilow lately. ❤
Gotta agree with @1bigrowdy, "God Bless The Child" is a ride! This album won album of the year in 1968 and there is not a bad song on the whole damn thing! Nothing traditional here, every song is unique and a surprise!
I have that album, bought it when it came out. I still like them all these years later. There were 3 bands from that time I think were really good, but many have forgotten. This one, Grand Funk Railroad and The Band,
BST is the only band of the era that one can compare with early Chicago. Both offered a fusion of pop, rock, jazz, gospel, soul, and blues. The Band wasn’t down the fusion path, too, but with some country, roots, and bluegrass tones. BST was truly great-I cannot imagine a band in 2024 even trying to do the music any of these three bands did 50+ years ago.
I don't fear being actually DEAD. Having absolutely No Consciousness, No Awareness, No Vision, No Sounds, No Feelings of any kind physically or emotionally, sounds peaceful and inviting. I was dead before I was alive. The only time I have ever felt any kind of PAIN, was while I am alive. Nothing to fear about Nothing at all. I'd be more afraid of being forced into an eternity I'd rather not be there. Worshipping any entity for eternity is not my idea of a good time. I'd much prefer actually being dead.
BS&T really ARE "fun on a bun" with their clever arrangements and their excellent musicianship. Combine that with Laura Nyro's brilliant lyrics and the fine voice of David Clayton Thomas, and you've got an unforgettable song.
Once again you display a great talent to breakdown song lyrics. I would say near the top of reactors I watch. The music and vocal performances as well but really outstanding on the lyrical side. Also appreciated is the matter of fact manner of stating your Christian faith and beliefs as there are some who would shy away from that.
If I'm not mistaken the three religious text only describe one activity in Heaven for eternity...... You sit (in a huge crowd) praising God with the same three phrases ...OVER AND OVER....FOREVER, sounds like Heaven to me.
There are already angels designated for the constant worship of God they are called Seraphim. I’m not sure what texts you are referencing but if it isn’t the Bible I can’t speak to and it isn’t applicable to Christianity. Catholicism and Christianity are not interchangeable. There are many things that will be done in heaven with worship being one of them. When you are in the presence of the purity, power, and love of God you can’t help but be in awe. I would assume it’s like you going to a concert where Kansas, the Beatles, Supertramp, ZZ Top, Santana and Pink Floyd were headlining lol

1968!! The good ole days!
Have to agree. All those great songs all for free on the radio.
It makes me happy to see the younger generation enjoying the music I grew up with
I LOVED THESE SONGS WAY BACK IN THE 60S I STILL LOVE THEM TODAY!!!!!
You found Blood Sweat and Tears eh? Hoo boy! I love their fusions and sense of humor. The hint of blues topped it off like a cherry. Hats off to all!

I will soon be 77, old white lady, but I want this to be played at my wake! Although, I do believe in Heaven!! Just enjoy B,S &T!! So much fun!!❤
Great reaction! Written by Laura Nyro, this is one of my top 100 songs . Thanks!
Thank you so much for hearing the whimsy. The humor-in contrast to the seriousness of dying-really carries this along.
The horns are more prominent in some of their other songs. They're a more jazzy Chicago(BS&T actually preceded Chicago)
The images added to make your point....COOL
SUCH a great song!!!! 🎶 Spinning Wheel is great too! They have always been a fave😊

One of my faves of all time. Still on my playlist.
