I took acting classes some years ago. (Absolute bliss btw. If Hollywood wasn't the corrupt monster it truly is, I would be in Hollywood now.)
But my acting coach at the audition for who to take and teach had this to say; "looks don't always make an actor rich. Look at Danny De Vito. He ain't pretty. But that man has made a LOT of money." That was honestly inspirational for me.

Don't be too hard on yourself! My very first demo that I put together I made because I was trying to apply for the LA Opera's Young Artist Program. I had zero confidence, mainly because the performances were highly edited, I thought I was horrible, etc. . But, I wasn't too bad, apparently, because they called me in for a live audition based on that demo! As bad as you think it is, it's probably not going to be as bad, as long as you let your talent and training shine through. Ask for outside, less negatively biased opinions before you finalize and send it out. Good luck with your demo! 😁👍

I been looking into VO, one piece of gear you want to invest in is called an audio preamplifier/ processor, preferably one that has the “Desser” feature built in. I had no clue what “Desser” meant but I was listening to a podcast and when they talked, the “S” was so sharp, it hurt my ears. I believe the Desser (or a similar feature) helps correct the sound.

I appreciate this information so much because so many people act so secretive when it comes to voice acting. Where they really just don't give a solid lick of information. 😅I do music too and it's the same thing when it comes to getting session work they give you this well you gotta know someone to know someone type of thing, with nothing else. I joined a Facebook group because someone told me to and all it was was just people sharing the fact they're voice actors. Like I couldn't even get this information while in school for Audio Engineering. 🤣

Honestly, I make music. I'm a rock/punk/blues frontman, songwriter, producer, etc. That's my main grind. But I've got the most accursed bass/bass-baritone cartoon villain voice, I'm already set up with a home studio, my schedule is busy but flexible, and I could use some pocket change. Compared to running a band, this is really not all that much work, especially if you aren't trying to make it a full-time career. So I'm considering just getting one of those cattle-call subscriptions and throwing auditions out every so often. Small jobs, nothing major, just for fun. Stuff I can pull on short notice, deliver quickly for the satisfaction of contributing, and then let the rest of the project be someone else's problem. I figure if it takes too much out of me or I don't land any work, I can always bench the idea, cry, and move on with no real harm done.

I believe that confidence and natural ability play a significant role. If you're starting out in voiceover with no actual ability to sound a certain way or do a wide range of voices, then you will definitely have a more difficult path. It's not ego talking here, just fact. If you love it, believe it and see it, you WILL receive it. Hard work always trumps talent, but if you combine a strong work ethic with persistence, an understanding of the business, and natural ability, how are you NOT successful?
I'm new to your channel and have been procrastinating voiceover for too long. I blame myself first and my job second. For me, I believe the transition from per-diem nurse to full-time voice talent will be one of the hardest yet rewarding things I've done in my life other than being a lifelong Seattle Mariners fan.
Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for your effort and contribution. 🫡
