  • A tribute to the Choreographer and Honoured Artist of Russia Sergei Vikharev, who has sadly passed away at the age of 55.
In his youth, Vikharev was a talented danseur with the Mariinsky and after his retirement, he went onto become more famous in the ballet world for a great reason. In 1999, Vikharev staged a reconstruction of Petipa's "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Mariinsky Theatre, beginning the journey to reconstruct and restore Petipa to the ballet stage. Following "The Sleeping Beauty" came reconstructions of Petipa's "La Bayadere", Fokine's "Petrushka", Petipa's "The Awakening of Flora" and Fokine's "Le Carnaval" at the Mariinsky. He then went onto reconstruct Petipa's "Coppelia" for the Bolshoi Ballet, "Raymonda" at La Scala and "La Fille mal gardee" at the Ekaterinburg State Theatre of Opera and Ballet. However, all his hard work and efforts were not appreciated by everybody, including many of those he worked with, but nevertheless, we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude for the path he set us on to restore the art form to what it should be, especially in Petipa's ballets.
In this video are the finale/apotheosis from his reconstruction of "The Sleeping Beauty", the adage of the Visions Pas d'action from his reconstruction of "Raymonda", the Waltz of the Hours from his reconstruction of "Coppelia" and the finale/apotheosis from his reconstruction of "The Awakening of Flora".
Rest in peace Maestro Vikharev and thank you for everything you did for our beloved art form; may your legacy live on.

Olesya Novikova, the best Mariinsky ballerina, dances in "La Sylphide" in Salzburg today. He was a great James and he was the teacher of Novikova. I wish her strengh for today's performance. R.I.P Sergei Vikharev - you were the best.

Thanks for putting this up--such a great loss. I am still angered that we have never had pro-shot videos of his reconstructions of Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadere from the Marrinsky.

EricMontreal22 yes me too, but unfortunately, the Mariinsky didn't appreciate his reconstructions, so much so that they didn't let him restore the notated choreography 100%; disgraceful.

Не могу поверить до сих пор.. такого человека потеряли.. некому теперь будет смахнуть советскую пыль с классики Петипа.. думала, Вазиев пришёл в БТ, сразу Вихарева позовёт для работы.. не случилось.

There's always hope; Vikharev was a huge inspiration to others, including Alexei Ratmansky and myself. Alexei won't give up following Vikharev's example to restore and secure Petipa's legacy and neither will I. We will still somehow brush all the Soviet dust off Petipa's ballets as Vikharev aimed to do.

The reconstructions need to be staged everywhere, not just in Russia, so Alexei staging them in America, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and now Australia is excellent practice. Staging them all over the world is strengthening Petipa's legacy. The Mariinsky did express interest in Alexei's "Paquita" reconstruction, but then they changed their minds and I'm not entirely sure why; it's only their loss. It seems it'll still take some effort to have more reconstructions staged in Russia, but if everyone works together and puts any disagreements between them aside, hopefully what Sergei aimed to do will be fulfilled. Something I did last year - I launched a new Petipa website called "The Marius Petipa Society" and I hope it can become an official website and a reference site. I also hope that this can lead me and others on the path to establishing an official Petipa society, so that everyone in the world can learn about him and why he's so important to our beloved art form. If you're interested, Google the site and check it out. :)

Ah you see, that kind of thinking never helps. To think that only a certain group or nationality of dancers can master Petipa really leads you astray. The truth is everyone can do Petipa; remember, not of all Petipa's dancers were Russian, including some of his best dancers - his greatest ballerina was Italian. And you're right, the Russian theatres really do need serious renovation with their repertoires, especially the Mariinsky Theatre because whether they like it or not, Petipa is their true heritage; he made the Russian Ballet what it is, or at least what it was before it all fell into decline in the hands of the Soviets and now things have declined even further with the terrible state that the Vaganova Academy is now in. I do think it's really sad how so many Russians can't seem to let go of the past, but it's always great when you find a Russian person who does acknowledge the Russian ballet needs serious reform and for that, I greatly respect you. :)

He and Daniel shared the role of Mercutio on their 1992 tour of the US. He had a great sense of humor and was an amiable man as well as an absolutely excellent dancer
