A stainless steel plate under the pour spout, wood bee (lol) a good addition. Will keep 2x4’s from getting goopy allowing good sanitary clean up.

I'm in almost the exact same boat as you.
3rd year beekeeping. I had 10 hives going into winter last year. I lost one hive to a Queen that turned into a drone layer in early spring . At about 20 hives right now and produced about 750 lbs of honey.
You are a lot smarter than me though and upgraded your equipment.
I ordered the exact same setup that you have a couple weeks ago. It won't be here for another 6 weeks so too late for this year but hopefully next year's harvest will be less tedious.

Thanks for the encouragement! The equipment can sure make it less of a headache to manage everything with minimal labor. I’ll be glad when most of my infrastructure and hive building stuff is done with. It’d be nice to put it on cruise control a little more next year.

Just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge. Having lost my only two hives late last year to the Asian hornet I put out three bait hives of your design, and after a somewhat bizarre year of weather so far I picked up two swarms this week. Thank you again, you have an excellent channel, from an Englishman in France.
Awesome to speak with a British Expat beekeeper living in France...how crazy is that?! What do you do for the Asian Hornets? I've seen a lot of hives in Europe that have wire mesh around the entrances to keep the hornets away.
@@DuckRiverHoney as with everything beekeeping opinions vary greatly when it come to dealing with the AH. Our experience is that we had two strong very productive hives for two years but late last summer they succumbed to the pressure of the AH. The hornets would stalk the hives taking bees in flight departing or returning, many bees would evade capture but generally the hornet would not depart until successful. We tried swatting a few which although mildly rewarding is fairly futile. Some AH we watched squeeze in the through the front entrance but most I think they gained entry through defective metal mesh bottom board screens that had become detached, lesson learned on that one. At the end of September I think both hives had had enough and departed, one hive completely leaving all stores and a few dead hornets the other a handful of bees remained but were ultimately doomed. So unwilling to give up just yet and inspired by you and your channel I built three medium box bait hives and as insurance I ordered a nuc which is doing really well. Our strategy re the AH this year has been to put out a number of hornet traps in early spring to catch any emerging AH queens, and use an anti hornet entrance on the front of the hive. It is a plastic reduced size replacement for the metal entrance, in theory the AH can’t get in now and they haven’t so far. David, very interesting stuff. We’ve had a few AGHs found on the northwest coast, probably came on a ship and made land. I hope they get them eradicated but if not I’ll be dealing with them in my lifetime most likely.

I wish I had seen a video like this a couple of years ago. I now have a similar procedure (but smaller) but had to "discover" it myself. I struggled with 18-19% honey for 2 years before I wised up.

Excellent video, well done. I'm going to give the paint strainers a go. I've had the same issue with the stainless steel strainers. For some reason I have more wax was coming out of the extractor and into the bucket, which caused the strainers to clog early and caused frustration and slowing of the extraction process.
That was the trouble I was having with them. Thanks!
That's a good honey harvest for all the work you put into your bee's. Hopefully I'm on the same path with 12 hives to start with. Had a great swarm catching year i gave several swarms to people who wanted to start beekeeping. I'm going to get some honey this fall but I'm leaving most of it for the ones that made it. 👍❤🐝
If we continue to be wet through July and August then I'll put supers back on first of September. Moisture in those two months has a whole lot to do with whether goldenrod produces nectar or not in the fall.
This is great info. I have been stressing about a honey house and I never thought about a shipping container! Those “ready built” sheds are so much more expensive than this.

It works pretty well, and it's sure easier than all the other methods I've seen of processing honey and wax, at least on a smaller scale.

Funny how much thought beekeepers put into making beekeeping quicker and easier. And if we actually do make it easier the next thought is getting more hives LOL.
Absolutely right. 2nd year beekeeper myself. Went from 2 to 8 hives. In my boat crappie fishing thinking about bees. Hard to get them off my mind
I added Maxant chain uncapper to my operation this past year, what a difference!

@@DuckRiverHoney I like it, it really sped up my operation, now I need and uncapping tank.
I like the base. Once you find a location you like you can put some threaded inserts with epoxy in the floor then use 1/4 x 20 screws to secure it down. That way you don't have to make new screw holes each time or worry about stripping out the wood if you reuse old screw holes.

could you please elaborate on how you identify when there is a nectar flow or dearth. Can you identify flow by bee activity like you can when they are bringing in pollen. Please list the telltale nectar flow signs from most obvious to the hardest to identify.

Foundations getting drawn is the telltale. Otherwise supers filling up. I do have some hives on scales now which is very helpful.
It's my belief that bees 'DARTING' rapidly out and to the hive in straight 'Bee Line' is a sign that bee are on a honey flow. Many years a bee keeper mentor told me that's where they got the term Bee Line from. Straight to or from the nectar source. Please mention if you see a correlation of this activity with a honey flow

Where is the Uncapper Roller Machine?
We did the exact same method last year, top stacks, fans on top and 90 degrees. And speaking of premium, we accidentally reduced our wildflower honey down to 12% moisture plus or minus. I've had people that don't like honey get excited over it. The demand is beyond what we cnn produce. This year we will be getting 15 dollars a pint. Just something to ponder.

Bob Binnie says that thicker honey intensifies the flavor...he sells a lot of 16% honey. I don't think I've ever had 12%, it'd be interesting. Thanks!
@@DuckRiverHoney I got the idea from Mr Binnie. Think of a chef reducing a sauce to intensify the flavor. Yes the 12% was an accident but the results were rather spectacular. But of course thicker, it won't win any "regulation" blue ribbons.
Yep, and the bottles don’t stretch as far either, and to fill them full they’ll be overweight.

I use a dehumidifier also but I was happy at 16% moisture.

Did you see that Honey Trickle on your Base Edge Tip :
You might be able to get a slightly longer (deeper) Drip through Gated Tube.
Whait until the Tank is not in use. Clean and then dissassemble the old one. And add the Longer one. So that Honey pouring out of the Honey Extractor Tank has a nice over Clear Pouring Space. Simples. 🙄
Or you could edge your whole Unit a bit closer to that edge. Why you ask ?
Did you see Honey doesnt pour straight down like Tap Water. It has more Viscosity (Trickle Thickness !) so it Drips and Wiggles backwards and forwards, as it pours into your Honey Bucket ! 🤭
Don't get in a Sticky Mess, think your Measurements out before making a Wheelable Base. Or know how "Honey" Flows !

Hello , I know this is a 3 year old video and am unable to find mentioned in the video the unit that allows you to dry out the honey - working the air humidifier and the heater in the honey house , could you direct me please
I’m using a dehumidifier. I don’t have to heat the building, summer does that for me.
How do you test how many yeast spores are in each gram?
I don’t, a lab would have to do that. With experience you can figure out what a safe level is for your area.

It’s open on the bottom, so you really need an uncapping tank to get the best out of it.

I got the Maxant mobile uncapping tank. For me it was that or Dadant. They are expensive and will likely get more expensive with the inflation we have now. Glad I have mine, and fully expect it to last my lifetime. Ditto on the workload!

Very informative video. Great set up that your developing. Could you make another video focusing on the components of your extraction process? I believe your uncapped is from Simple Harmony Farms and retails for $50-60. I have 30 colonies and want to up my game.
I do have the simple harmony, but that uncapper is much more expensive, more like $450. But in uncapper terms that is a very good value. My uncapping tank is from Maxant and my extractor is a maxant 20 frame. I also have a 42 gallon Maxant bottling tank.
I find it interesting that you have not had more problems. Being someone that has traveled.

You can bring a infested hive back but I wouldn’t use it for honey production.
He also placed a porno mag pages and he sat and watched the students work hives. It took the bees less than 30 minutes to remove those pages.

Funny you brought all this up…I’ve watched some of his videos, and I’ve actually got a Peterson swing blade mill that should be delivered in the next few weeks. I’ll be doing a lot of milling over the winter.

We’ve been using Firehouse Subs pickle buckets for cut outs and they split on the bottom as well. I need to get some of those good buckets.
I think 90 mil is the way to go. Or rather .090 mil.
Fantastic video ! I am just getting started into bee keeping this year with my 12 year old son. I also have a 20' shipping container I plan on converting into our honey house. I like the spray foam idea on the inside. I have been trying to figure out the best way to insulate the container and put power to it, and seeing what you did in your seems like a great solution. I also enjoy watching your videos as I feel I am very close to where you are in this beekeeping adventure. Actually I am prob about a year behind as I am just starting this year. I started off with three colonies in April, then caught a swarm from one for a total of four. I had to purchase and assemble all my hive equipment and my goal is not to collect any honey at this time but to have these four colonies successfully over winter and then do splits with strong hives in 2022. I appreciate your methodology to beekeeping and looking at it as a complete system. Thank you for producing interesting & informative content !
Starting out it seems like I'm behind all the time! The honey house is a work in progress. I got some of those desk grommets that allow you to run extension cords through a desk....I'm going to drill some 1 3/4" holes in the floor of the container and run cords out using those grommets. Then I can fill the hole with spray foam and everything will be tidy and ant proof. I've also got to build some shelving to store bottles up above the AC and dehumidifier. I'll probably run a support across the ceiling eventually so I can get some more permanent lighting in there. Work in progress as I said :). Good luck to you and your operation, bees are a lot of work but very rewarding.
Your buckets are really full. Leave 4” of head space if your going to let it crystallize.
Question - is there a market for wetter honey ? Just wondering because I like to make mead . It's sound ideal to go with what's already happening naturally .
But I guess it would be on a time crunch to get it sold and shipped . ??🤔
Yeah mead would be a market, but it’s a lot easier to deal with stable honey.

Nectar source. Canola will do that as it’s high in dextrose.

Nice harvest! Man that’s a nice setup you have there. I looked at that style uncapper a while back and decided to stay with the hot knife. I even bought a second knife and tank to speed things up. Your method is ten times faster than the knife. I was concerned with the way it looked like it chewed up the comb because I reuse my comb. It looked like it did pretty good. I don’t get hardly any cappings in my filter though. I’m planning on pulling my honey tomorrow and will be testing for the first time. We’ve had a super wet year and I’m concerned about fermentation. I usually harvest the second week in July but out it off because of the moisture. I hope I can get half what you have. Thanks for the shout out.
I was concerned about the comb too, and about not collecting as much wax. It actually doesn’t chew the comb up bad at all, it just leaves the wax cappings perforated and hanging loose, so it LOOKS damaged but really isn’t. I get very little cappings through the extractor. I found if you can let bees clean up the wet supers then you can stack them on concrete or old tin…bees chew off those loose cappings and they fall down. Sweep them up and process when the supers are dry. So my two worries - damaged comb and less wax - both were off base.
25 to 30 production hives and you have tee shirts made? Not knocking it, but I've learned to put the money into growth before advertisement. Sometimes you can't meet the demand if you go that route. Either way, I like your content and wish you success. Your video with Bob Binnie on honey house design was really well thought out.
Christopher, it’s easier to scale honey production than it is to build brand recognition and scale customer base. Marketing needs to grow with production. Plus, I have this UA-cam channel, and people have asked for shirts. 😉

Actually we are not Honey farmer ، we just go to the jungle and harvest wild Honey۔
Lots of surface area, low humidity, and warm temperature. There are several ways to do that, but it’s easier when honey is still in the comb.
Are you using a 40ft or 20ft container?
I’ve got a 20 footer. I won’t say that’s best though. It is easier to control the temp in, but I believe I’d rather have a 30’ if I could find one.
Did you do spray foam yourself?
I did. If you can buy one already foamed I’d recommend that, unless the price is unreasonable.

Excellent Excellent video! All of your videos are spot on and very helpful. I'm in the about the spot you were in last year. Started with zero bees this spring and have 6 hives now. I am not worrying about much honey for myself this season. I want to do a really good job with summer management so my bees get through winter good and healthy. Hoping for a great startup next spring. I am looking forward to your management videos. They will be helpful as all your videos are.
Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement! Queenright, well fed, and low mite loads are the biggies for summer. I also manage for dearth a bit by planting buckwheat and making sure the small ones have an entrance small enough to defend.
What’s your plan to sell that much honey? I’m guessing I’ll get almost that much honey this year, and I have no idea on getting rid of it. I don’t ever see myself at a farmers market all day. How can you find bulk buyers?
I’ll do a full video on honey marketing. To be honest I’ve got a lot of experience with marketing so I’m probably better at that than at beekeeping. Short of it is we’re pursuing limited retail, have a waitlist on Facebook (my wife uses the “mom network”), and we had custom labels and a brand made.
I'd love to get started with beekeeping. Want to come out and help us out next spring?
I stay pretty busy, I mentored a bit this year and will change it up a bit in the future, for less time commitment.

My honey is showing direct from the hive, capped, 15.5%.
That’s great, you must live in a drier area than me. I actually had some capped honey test at 19.5%. I dried my uncapped down enough that after mixing my buckets are a consistent 17 to 17.5%.
