I found this album in a one dollar bin at my local record store, dear God it was the greatest find of my life. I've listened to it religiously for the past few weeks. from what I've heard they aren't together anymore, that's such a shame, i would love to see them live
One dollar bin. Both saddened and optimistic about this tbh - sad cos this amazing band have been relegated to such status; happy cos maybe that means it’ll reach more people where it belongs :)
I once heard this song outside a cafe and it literally haunted me for six months. I couldn't remember the lyrics but I remembered the rhythms. Then one day I remembered enough to google it (yes after months had gone by) and was able to find it again, after hearing it for maybe just a minute or so I knew it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. I love this band so much.
This song is one of the most inspirational songs I have ever heard! I have been playing it at least once a week for about five years! It will truly lift your spirits!
This is the kind of band who makes a very good band they dont only sing songs but they some how express them! I started to listen to ''Grandaddy'' 3 months ago and i loved it!
This is the only song I've ever heard in my life that actually warms you up!! It's a wonderful record, one of my favourites, and that's coming from someone who plays in a punk band. Cheers, Granddaddy, you are remembered! :-))
First time I heard this was at 3am in an old French farmhouse an ex-girlfriend had. We were drinking and I was feeling miserable about life and about us. Then I put this CD on and within seconds I was up and dancing and knowing I could turn my life around. Thank you, Grandaddy. It worked.
"bust the lock off the front door Once you're outside you wont want to hide anymore Like the light on the front porch Once it's on you never want to turn it off anymore" ha ha my favourite band.
I agree wiht most posts I see about Grandaddy, they are underrated and are, without a doubt ten times better than 99% of any of the shit you will hear on the commercial radio stations!
"Bust the lock off the front door Once you're outside you won't wanna hide anymore Like the light on the front porch Once it's on you'll never wanna turn it off anymore And now it's on And now it's on!" Beautiful.
Sweet band I was lucky to work with back in the day. I provided the P.A. and was the head soundman at the Historic Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky, damn did we get some bitchin’ bands.
I was at University a couple of years after this came out. A friend of mine made a video in which this played over a very specific type of footage. He explained: "the song makes me think of people working together earnestly, seriously and diligently on a shared task." His video was a montage of stock footage-type stuff like NASA mission control, scientists working in a lab, people crewing a boat, people sorting freight in some kind of logistics distribution centre, a construction crew working on a large building project etc. This sounds ridiculous, but I found it almost indescribably moving, in a way that I do not remotely understand. I wept more than once watching it and I have no Earthly idea why. I'd give anything to have a copy of it.
While performing this song (back in 2003 or around then) they had old motorcross footage being played on a projector screen. It was a good choice to accompany this song...
I think it's about agoraphobia, a fear of going outside. The reason I say that is because agoraphobia is basically a phobia or "fear" of going and/or being outside. The chorus says "once you're outside you won't wanna hide anymore." So basically, the song is saying to "bust the lock off the front door" because it's referring to the fact that agorapobes lock themselves in their houses for years even decades at a time, doing whatever they can to avoid their fear of the outside. Then one they're outside, they'll realize that it's not so bad, they'll "light the light on the front porch to so signify that they are no longer afraid of the outside because they were brave enough to go outside and turn on the light;"now it's on" simply means they've got their confidence back. I hope this helps! :)
I used it as an analogy for a new relationship - I met my future life partner on holiday in Greece, and then we had some time apart just communicating via the internet ... I listened to a few songs that made me realize how lucky I was and that we needed to get together. 'Bust the lock of the front door' I interpreted as just letting go. 'Once you're outside you won't want to hide anymore' was probably related to the fact that I was getting older, and lost some faith in love, I just needed to be brave and take that step again. My interpretation. That's the glory of music and being human - we all have our own interpretations.
An analogy for life.... All the scientists at the forefront of their fields of expertise running as fast as they can to switch on the lights for all us toys so we can enjoy ourselves.... And all the while the band plays on.
@ryo21st This song is one of the best. A few good others are A.M. 180, Summer Here Kids, and I`m on Standby. Theres too many good ones to name all of them though...

11 year old comment. Something is very kool about that.
I found Steve from Blues Clues album in the dollar bin. It's worth more than that if you're a Flaming Lips fan
It’s a Friday in 2023 and I’m alive baby! Peace and positivity from CA
It's Saturday 2024, peace and love from the east coast
Grandaddy IS an indie rock group from Modesto, California, United States.
always tought they was scandinian states; Go Cali!
most under-appreciated band of my time
For sure. Great band, I don't understand why they never got big.
This album is truly an overlooked gem 💎
My parents use to play their album Sumday constantly. All I ever heard in the car. Roadtrips were filled with me humming to them...
that makes me feel old as hell. I was listening to this in high school
dank memes my dad would always play AM180 when he'd take me to the park as a kid. that had to be like 2004-2006. it's so nostalgic, dude.
Saidif Mejia Great songs...
You have great parents. Grandaddy is my favorite band.
My dad plays their albums all the time

Thank you Kevin Garcia for the great music! Rest in peace!

I lived across the street from them in the late nineties. They had a bad ass ramp in the back yard.
Nice!
City Skates
Jason was a pretty decent skateboarder until he got injured, that’s why he started doing Grandaddy….

I remembered that I forgot about this song! Listened to it in 2007- now it’s on in 2022!!!
Snocone from The Church of Lazlo sent me here. I forgot how much I loved Grandaddy. This still holds up.
Skitbra grupp & låt. Hälsningar från Sverige 😉🤗🇸🇪🇸🇪

Just discovered them today! It seems impossible to find good indie bands, good indie bands seem to find you. I can't stop playing this song.
Do you already love The Get up Kids? They're pretty great too.
This song not being more famous is a prime example of how terrible the music biz is . I love this song ! First time listener !
One of the simplest solos that really work. Reminds me of the sax in The Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night"
Thanks for the up, buddy. You reminded me it's been years since I went on a Grandaddy binge.
"bust the lock off the front door
Once you're outside you wont want to hide anymore
Like the light on the front porch
Once it's on you never want to turn it off anymore"
ha ha my favourite band.
I saw them in Pittsburgh in 2000 with The Dismemberment Plan. They played at Roboto Project - it was amazing. Nice guys and great music.
Wow I just came across this on an old compilation CD I made/burned from what must be 10years ago. Playing it in the car. Such a great song 😊
Lucky enough to see them twice in Glasgow - simply brilliant.

Best song ever
I've loved this song since I was 13, it just so warm and pleasant! But I only just realized that I have no idea what it's about.

@@GerardoGarcia98218 That's a fair reading of the song. I personally just thought it was about someone coming out of a personal rut in their lives.
@@GerardoGarcia98218 that is brilliant, I hadn't thought about it, but it makes sense

@shitsoils Lucky for us all my friend, they are finally back together.
진짜 명곡이다 짱짱!!😊
It reminds me of heatmiser and magic Eliott singing tricks 💓
In contention for best outro ever.
לא יוצא לי מהראש השיר הזה פשוט שיר מהמם
Feel like the dude on the Treadmill is basically Bryan Johnson lol.
Thanks, Bryan.
The start sounds like a reference to the end of bastards of young by the Replacements.... Also with the ring tone voice ..
2018 and recording nice sound and band.

THEY'RE BACK.
I've been to Jim's house a couple of times.
