    oh men, with the new tubes it sounds sparkly and feels like it has a chorus pedal in front, love the tone with both , that amp sounds straight up beautiful, i purchased a 5 watt of the same amp and cant believe how good the little thing sounds also, cheers.

    These amps are much better for cleans. The headroom on them is pretty good for such a small amp. Your speaker and tube swap definitely helped the overdrive tho. I put Mesa 6v6 tubes in my music master bass amp and it made a hell of a difference compared to the JJs that were in it when I bought it.

    I’d take a middle option,…definitely swap the speaker AND swap just the preamp tubes or even just the single preamp tube closest to the input jack (V1).

      Hello Mekke, just out of curiousity my laney 12r had a drop in sound a few weeks ago
      Now i've too turn the volume at max to hear an overdrive sound (I can't hear any clean tonenow)
      I would say even at max volume it sound 1% to what it use to
      Do you think changing the tube will fix this?

    Thanks for your video, very informative, I have just put a Jensen C10R speaker in my Laney Cub 10 and it makes a huge difference, so the tubes will be next !!! The clips that hold the tubes in do look a bit confusing to remove though !!

    Ciao amico, i have a cub8 and i want to swap tubes too, do we need to bias? if so how?

    • @mekkemusic
      @mekkemusic  6 років тому +2

      Ciao amico, I did not set the bias. Somebody on the comments said its possible but he never returned with a procedure. As far as I know is auto bias, so on this video I simply installed a set of matched tubes. So far, my answer is> CUB 10 is auto bias

    • @upload2352
      @upload2352 5 років тому +3

      @@mekkemusic The Cub 10 does not auto bias - it is a "fixed bias" system, which means it's adjustable. There is a Bias trim pot on the circuit board for this purpose, but Laney does not want amateurs under the hood (dangerous), so they don't tell you to do it, or how to do it. You measure voltage at a point on the circuit board, then use the pot to bring it into spec ("-.21v" - not sure if they mean a negative volt??). If you use a matched set of Ruby (original) output tubes to replace, you *shouldn't* need to rebias, but changing make or spec of tube means a re-bias is the best practice - otherwise, you be running the tubes too hot or too cold. A tech would likely charge $50 USD to rebias an amp, though it is a small job. The Cub 10 requires chassis removal, whereas others have an accessible bias port on the rear panel.

      It is a fixed bias.

    • @VintageSG
      @VintageSG 6 років тому +2

      Method 1 :Remove the chassis, ensure either the speaker or a dummy load it attached. Find the junction of R13+R28. Tweak the bias pot until you get to -21V. Do not zap yourself!, that is considered bad form.
      Method 2 :Buy a bias probe and a pair of multimeters. Use the Weber or Rob Robinette online bias calculator. You'll need to measure B+ as well as the current as altering the current draw will alter the B+. Aim for 70% dissipation. You can't set the individual bias, so use the probe to see which valve has the highest draw and set that to 70%. Two bias probes and three meters is even easier.
      Set the bias with gain and volume on zero. It's the idle current you're setting.
      The schematic is freely available at Elektrotanya
      JJ 6V6S valves need the pot winding near full on. Ruby ( Shuguang ), about midway and Reflektor 6p6s just below that on mine.

      @@VintageSG Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment! I have a Cub 10 as well, that i have swapped GT 6V6S in, which I love the sound of. I didn't adjust the bias at the time. The amp is considerably louder (I swapped the speaker for the wonderful Eminence GA10-SC64), however, the 6V6s developed rattling and I put the stock Ruby's back. Based on your comment, if i put the 6V6s's back and adjust the trim to max, I should be relatively closer to optimum bias setting?

    • @VintageSG
      @VintageSG 6 років тому +2

      Mine came biased rather cold from the factory with the stock Ruby valves. Initially, I set it up to the service manual specified -21V, which perked it up and gave a lovely growl, louder too with more presence. Moving to the JJ 6V6S valves, I worked out 70% dissipation and used some bias probes obtained from Ebay. As the JJ are 14W dissipation valves compared to 12W for a 6V6GT, this needed the bias pot tweaking to near full. A check of the voltage gave -22V, close enough.The amp comes alive when it is setup correctly. Try it, and run it through an external 2x10" or 1x12" cab for the full glory. I like mine set to around half gain and three quarter volume, tone up full. Lovely power valve compression and grind.

  • @Moon_Vibex
    @Moon_Vibex 6 років тому

    I heard the whole audiotest, crunch tones benefits a lot of the new tube set. With the stock tubes, your crunch tone was dull, lifeless, with new tubes the tone has improved, has more presence, is more articulate, maybe a little more brilliant (more high frequencies). Instead clean tones are more or less the same. I didn't hear a dramatic difference between the stock set and the new set.

      For once though I can hear a difference - deeper tone. And the poster makes great point about replacing speaker as better investment. I got the 12r which has a decent speaker in it. But I also bought some Cliff jacks - the ones that pass thru when nothing is plugged in and pass input to right connector otherwise - so now I can use my solid state combo amp as a cabinet. And for sure that makes a difference :-). Do I prefer my old Celestion to the HH speaker? Well I now have options -- going to do the same with my Orange B35 ... Wonder what Laney sounds like thru bass speaker :-)
