Thank you (: My girlfriend is Vietnamese and does not have family near us. Sometimes she gets very sad because she misses the food from there so sometimes we go to the vietnamese market to get food there. Today I decided to cook her this because she mentioned she really wanted to eat it again. She loved it (: Thanks again
That's is extremely awesome of you. I've had the pleasure of meeting a few Vietnamese women who embrace their culture 100%. I was very jealous of their husband's, because they didn't treat these very smart and very creative Vietnamese women in the best of ways. I'd love to meet a traditional Vietnamese woman to establish a relationship with. Its hard for me, only because I'm introverted.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! This was a childhood comfort food for me too. Now I want to cook it for my kids to introduce them to the Vietnamese food I was brought up on. Dad used to serve this with a side of Vietnamese herbal coleslaw. Edited to add: I used your recipe and it was a success! My family loved it! So delicious!
My grandmother used to make this when we were kids :D She's Dutch-Indonesian so we know it as "bubur ayam" but it's very similar. It's nice with thinly-sliced leek or cabbage in it and a good way to sneak vegetables into kids. I'll have to give it a try, my grandmother doesn't really follow a recipe so I never did work out how to do it properly. Thank-you for the instructions! :D
good idea!! I always think its a good way to use up leftover meat, but my Vietnamese friend say "chicken must be cooked in the soup or not tasty" So i did not. I so glad you mention this, now I know someone have experience to the taste of it this way! Thanks for post ^.^
I’ve made this recipe three times now. It’s definitely the most simple and most delicious recipe for congee I’ve found. I can’t get enough of it. It is so tasty and always makes me feel comfy, warm and healthy. Thanks so much for sharing!
So I found this video today and I tried it. It was so flavourful and aromatic, it made my kitchen smell wonderful! I was intimidated by the whole chicken, so I used chicken wings instead, and I threw in a turnip with my onion, but it came out wonderful! Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipie~
I love the way you boil the chicken separately with the bones first, which then gives you the rich bone broth for the congee, ready to go, instead of plain water!
Thank you very much for this recipe. My son is feeling bad and I am going to make this. My mother used to make this for me. Thank goodness we have an asian market here in Austin Texas. It is cold and raining today. Perfect soup. You make cooking vietnamese food fun!!!
yes you can use the same technique to cook plain porridge, and then add in ground pork when the congee is almost cooked. But then it is not "chicken congee" anymore. It's ground pork congee hehe
Thank you thank you thank you cam on ! Finally a video of this a great video and English and viet subtitles my husband is vietnamese and he has a fever this morning so ill try and make it as good as you !
Interesting that you use both glutinous and jasmine rice. My parents only used jasmine rice in our congee and we like ours with less water so it's more dense. I like eating mine topped with sliced green onions, sliced cilantro, fried shallots, and homemade garlic hot pepper. Mmmm!!! BTW, your hair looks great!!
Thanks soo much for the recipes!! I just finish cooking, it a better way to cook, before every time I cook it burnt button of pot!! It taste so good too, but I used 2 big chicken leg quarter.. Lol still taste good!
You don't need to. I like the way you speak- it's actually cute-:) Thank you for sharing your videos. I'm going to try this recipe today - it's cold and snowing outside. I love Vietnamese food. Tnx again
Omg nice i remember when i eat this long time ago in a hospital in vietnam, i was so hungry but the doctor keeping me starve for about 2 days. And then they allow me to eat, so they bough this chao ga. And it was the most delicious thing I have tasted in my entire life, i was addicted to chao ga like a zombie on drugs. OMFG I GOING TO COOK THIS RIGHT NOW
Toi thich chao ga rat nhieu! I will give your recipe a try right away. I was always making it a bit thicker and also I love the chicken skin inside it :3 And my vietnamese friend once told me that for chao ga it is better when the chicken is a bit older but I dont know about that. I personally love vietnamese kitchen! Cam on rat nhieu
I have had chicken porridge in almost every Asian country (excl. Laos and Burma/Myanmar). It seems to be quite ubiquitous amongst Asian cultures (thanks China). My favorite versions happen to be South Korean and Malaysian. Korean version had tons of garlic that was sweet and mellow. Malaysian version was very bold do it adding dark soy sauce and a little Black Vinegar.
Make this today for mam and dad. first time in my life. And i am 43 .Mam's kooking is the best....but my dad told me....this is one of the best chao ga I Have. :). I told him....learning from youtube. Tnx
Hi Helen, I'm excited to give your recipe a try! It will be my first time making porridge, I've been hesitant to do so. But, I've never had to cook a while chicken before - how do I wash the chicken before cooking it? Is it needed to do that, and are there any "insides" that shouldn't be there before I cook it? Please let me know the soonest you can! 😊
It depends where you buy the chicken. Mostly at supermarkets, all the insides have been taken out. So just rub with some salt and rinse under tap water.
Hello, thank you for your fantastic recipes. I never find your old recipes on your website because there is no search engine on your website. Do you have the link to the complete recipe for chao ga? Thank you.

A so called "Suppenhuhn" is a chicken with more fat than a normal chicken. In germany we use the "Suppenhuhn" to create a broth and I bet it is the right choice for your dish here.
