  • This is my 1975 celica Gt. My father bought this car new in may of 75. It was my first car at 16. I retired it in 1995 and did a full restoration. The engine has been recently rebuilt. The drive train is all original. This is a video of a walk around of the car and description.

Beautiful. I also had a ‘75 in silver. Loved it dearly, I replaced the glove box door with a walnut oil rubbed wood door to add to the warmth.

Fun memories for sure. These old celicas really are neat cars. It's a shame so few are left now. You just don't see them much anymore.

I remember my Dad having a 72 that was all black with slotted mags. He put a Monza tip on it and a front spoiler. The thing I remeber most was he had a playboy bunny shifter knob. lol I loved that car and want to build one. Nice job on yours it's beautiful!

Thanks so much guys! It really is a neat little car, and it's nice to see people starting to restore them. You can do some really neat things with them. I do wish Toyota had more factory support for restoration parts, but I guess the challenge is part of the fun!

It's the kind of character these cars bring that you don't experience with new cars nowadays. The simplicity and the craftsmanship, paired with some sun glasses and rolled windows = perfect cruise! I love my 77 GT and hoping to fully restore it also someday. Thanks for sharing your video, very nice car...

Very nice! I will hopefully be in the market to pick up a 75 myself to do a restomod as 75 is my birth year and I have a donor with a fully built 1nz-fe sitting at roughly 400whp on the street tune.

Beautiful job. I bought a new 74 when first married even though we couldn't afford it. We loved doing rallys in it. Looking at it today it seems shockingly small but if I found another I would buy it for fun.

I watched through the video once with the sound off, and literal tears came to my eyes. The interior looks so good that I can smell it. Oh, my god, the memories...
I miss that steering wheel. I miss those weird back seat belts. I miss my first car. I felt like I was sitting in it again.
I watched it again with the sound on. I was never able to afford to fix the AC, and mine certainly did not have the rumble that you've given yours, but the sound of the spring (poing!) when the hood opened made me tear up again.
You have truly honored this beautiful vehicle, though don't really need the spoiler. Thank you so much for being so kind to it and posting it for us.

Love it! I bought my '75 GT band new when I was sixteen, it was red with black interior and vinyl top. I drove it for only the first 5 summers and then stored it till year 2000. I sold it in 2005 with only 60K original miles and all in original showroom condition.

My first was a 73 St. I just traded my DD -a 2002 eclipse gt in perfect condition, for a 74 gt. I got reeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy really close to dying in the 73. Glad I found another celica to maybe finish me off! (Its not the car, it's how I drive and where I drive) these cars are such a pleasure to drive, and I some how fall more and more in love with mine everytime I see it. Grats on owning such a pristine example!

Bryon, thanks for sharing your story. I do still have the original wheels, but they where removed for the westerns. The car now sports a set of konig rewinds. They are 15 inch wheels. Trying to find correct size tires in thirteens is getting tough. One day ill put the original wheels back on. I prefer the look of the rewinds, and they more closely match the style of the original wheels. Someday soon I will post an updated video for people to see...

Nice restoration. I'm in the UK and my current project is a 1991 5th generation Celica GT-Four. The limited edition Carlos Sainz rally version. Rare as hell here in the UK as we salt the roads in winter. Just got the Oz Racinh alloys done in gloss white and the Castrol graphics on it. After the winter, a few performance mods and restore the interior. I love all the Celicas. Each gerneration has it's own unique charm.

Memories, I had a metallic forest green 1975 GT with factory luggage rack on the trunk. I had dual webers on it. I literally drove it into the ground, the metal where the front suspension was bolted on actually tore. God I had forgotten about that terrible door alarm. I remember putting in a tape deck and it took hours to shove it through the bottom of the stack behind the A/C controls and so on, only to learn latter that the glove box screwed out and gave full access to the stereo in minutes. Thanks for the post. My to cents are I prefer the original wheels and no spoiler.

Thanks Scott! They are small cars! I get a kick out of pulling it next to modern cars. It's really not much bigger than a miata. They are fun! I hope you can find a replacement one day, and take a trip down memory lane. I also had a cherry 77 lift back. Wish I had never sold it now. That was roughly 15 years ago. Seems to be getting hard to find these things that aren't in need of a total restoration.

I just wanted to add to my last comment. I paid $5500 cash for my Celica GT in '75 and sold it 30 years later for $9500 in '05. Not a bad investment for a Japanese car. I have lots of photos if you want to see.

Thank you Jason! I've always liked them to, and obviously they are harder and harder to come by now. It's nod of a shame restoration parts are hard t find. Nissan does a pretty good job of recreating parts for the 240 platforms, you would think Toyota would have caught on. Guess the flip side of that is now, it's so rare, everywhere I go someone wants to take it home with them. It's fun to have something unique.

I bought my Celica GT brand new in 1975 for $5500 and sold it in 2005 for double what I paid. It only had original 60K on it and was all in original condition. Great car but I sold it after moving to Florida cuz it didn't A/C or a place to properly store it.

    Cool car
    I had a 1977 GT liftback one.
It had headers and high performance cam
    AC never worked
It was silver and black with western style wheels.
I ended up selling it it was getting too hard to get parts.
it has almost 400k on it I bet at that point.

Frazer, I got the decals from Toyota 25 years ago when they were still available. You can still find re creation 20 and 22r stickers on eBay, or scan them and have a shop re create them. I would have the air cleaner stickers recreated, (they are easy) but I would try and source the 20r stickers as they are foil backed. That is why I would suggest the eBay recreations of those. The small oil type sticker found on the valve cover can be found on the old fj40 restoration sites, as well as the radiator overflow bottle sticker. The original coolant caps can be found on eBay by using a search for ta22. The large sticker that is found on the fan cowling can easily be recreated as well.

Forgot to mention, mechanical parts for this thing are EASY to get. The engine was used in the celicas and trucks for years. Driveline is also easy to get. Mechanically restoring these cars is easy. It's the cosmetics that make it a little challenging if your going factory correct.

Jonathan, the car retains its original manual steering rack. Everything LOOKS stock, as it would have in 75, with exception to the wheels, and flat black engine bay paint. Every modification has been done to be hidden. For instance, the adapter for the weber carb so I can use the factory air cleaner, and the exhaust manifold machined out to fit over the header.

Daimeon, restoration parts for classic toyotas can be hard to come by. It's not like restoring a Datsun 240 or other classic, where there is plenty of aftermarket support. In the case of Nissan, the company also supplies restoration parts. Toyota has not done this. I guess that's one of the things that make this a challenge. It also means that you have something very unique when done. Again, unfortunately getting factory correct parts is difficult. In my case I started with an excellent unmolested car, and began to stock pile engine sticker kits, original factory seating material, dash boards and consoles while I could still (easily) get them. You have places you can source some parts though, and shops can do almost anything you want depending on how much you want to spend. Check eBay for restoration parts. Some things can still be found in Taiwan of all places. There are also some sites in California selling classic celica parts. Join a classic celica, or classic Toyota site and get a wealth of support from vendors and people there. That will make life easier when restoring one of these cars. I will add, if factory isn't your thing, a custom restoration may be easier as there seems to be endless solutions to hard to find interior parts.

Purchasing a '77 Celica GT which was not factory equipped with A/C. I live in AZ, so as you can imagine having A/C most of the year is almost a must. Any idea where I can find A/C for this car? I've just started my internet search and haven't found anything yet. With you and your family's vast knowledge of the car any tips/suggestions where to find factor A/C or an aftermarket system? Thanks for the help! P.S. Beautiful restoration. Cheers!

Ryan, I would check the classic celica sites, such as classic-celica dot com or 1stgencelica. They have a classified section and I usually see a full a/c system pop up every few months. Also check eBay. From time to time they show up there. You can also build one yourself. I think the site to source a custom a/c was classicair dot com. I can't remember if That's the correct name, but Google classic air. Good luck! BTW the factory air systems are almost bullet proof. Mine is still ice cold, has the original lines, and was recharged over five years ago....
