With a piece this demanding, being totally relaxed yet focused is the only way to play successfully. You MUST be totally relaxed and totally in focus to play like him. It's almost as important as actually having the skill. I believe it is a skill itself.

@@op-th1yx One of the more noticeable differences is in the third variation. If you listen to this one the first chord has a low A octave, while the roikelli version has the octaves as an E. There are also other small differences that you would have to listen out for, but for the most part, they are almost identical. The final version in the grande paganini etudes is simplified but sounds better imo. There has to be a balance of virtuosity and musicality. All the extra notes kind of muddies the tune.
The final version is good, but this absurdly difficult one is not that bad either. It's interesting to see how Liszt maximized the textures of the Caprice by adding the counermelody and made it into chords.
