    You can tell by how much he raises his hands , or how he occasionally moves his left foot back underneath him. This man is totally relaxed and comfortable playing this piece. He is a master.

      Joan Saniel still a master weather its at original tempo or not. its hard enough trying to play it. let alone to play it relaxed and make it sound clear enough to hear.

      With a piece this demanding, being totally relaxed yet focused is the only way to play successfully. You MUST be totally relaxed and totally in focus to play like him. It's almost as important as actually having the skill. I believe it is a skill itself.

      Thats the name of the 1838 version.
      The 1851 is called Grandes etudes de paganini.

      @@composaboi I only know two versions. This one (1838 the hard one) and the easier one that people tend to play. This is the same thing that is on roikelli. If I am wrong what are the differences between this and roikelli?

      @@op-th1yx One of the more noticeable differences is in the third variation. If you listen to this one the first chord has a low A octave, while the roikelli version has the octaves as an E. There are also other small differences that you would have to listen out for, but for the most part, they are almost identical. Although he is kinda crap, which makes it harder to tell, I am pretty sure that this guy plays the original ua-cam.com/video/9DH4j-3pPGs/v-deo.html

    2 things: 1. Petrov’s glasses adjustments are so badass lol. 2. Why does no one talk abt the similarities between early Liszt and late Beethoven??? I really think young Liszt was heavily inspired by the late sonatas/symphonies and tried to bring/expand their extreme degree of polyphony to the piano

      He was actually heavily influenced from Paganini, and wanted to be the greatest piano virtuoso.

    The only one after Liszt to play it exactly as written. Everyone else that I’ve heard performing this piece played thirds in the left hand instead of tenths.

      hero boy - I’ve listened to many recordings of this piece for nearly a decade now, and I know for a fact that this specific recording is not revised. I’m looking at the original 1838 score, and every note that I see on the page is heard in the recording.

    Sounds extremely good whoever says “I like it but it needs to be faster/ I want it to be at the original tempo” is sacrilegious (if you can play it slowly you can play it fast) twosetviolin ;)

      even if someone plays in the original tempo, the musicality would be lost and it would sound very haphazard. At this tempo, it is very clean and precise.

    Режиссёру этой записи надо было руки оторвать! Надо же -- виртуозная вещь, а руки пианиста (самое-то главное в такого рода исполнении!) показывают от силы четверть времени. Ну, а само исполнение Николая Петрова -- умри, Денис, лучше не сыграешь! Просто блеск!

    For La Campanella and the infamous "Arpeggio" study I prefer Filipec, but for the sixth I prefer Petrov's massive sound.

      Leslie Howard, you can find his album un itunes.(not only the 6 etudes but 4a, 1 using the cadenza and 5 using cadenzas.Truly a must own for anyone interested in this etudes .

      where is the source of that?even nowdays where musical training is miles away better than in romantic period only two person ever played those etudes.
      There is no reports whatsoever of lizt playieng those etudes he never premiered it,and none of his students played the piece neither.

    The final version in the grande paganini etudes is simplified but sounds better imo. There has to be a balance of virtuosity and musicality. All the extra notes kind of muddies the tune.

      The final version is good, but this absurdly difficult one is not that bad either. It's interesting to see how Liszt maximized the textures of the Caprice by adding the counermelody and made it into chords.
