  • Lincoln's MKZ has had a refresh for 2017 including one seriously beefy 3.0-litre twin turbo that kept us grinning all the way to Revelstoke for some Thanksgiving chow. But can this mid-size luxury sedan work for families? Take a look.

In 2019, I purchased a 2017 MKZ 3.0 AWD with 28,000 miles that was selling for half of the original sticker price. Loved every minute in it driving since. I had also been considering a Taurus SHO. I'm 6'3" and was disappointed with BOTH models' head room. The sun roof framing steals about 2" of room. Fortunately for me, the dealership I was shopping at said to wait 2 weeks as they were getting an MKZ in with NO sun roof. That made all the difference in the world: head room problem solved.
    This is an awesome car.

Great Review!!! I have a '16 MKZ in Platinum Dune Metallic with the 2.0 and it is a blast to drive. Get looks and compliments everywhere I go. Never wanted a BMW or Mercedes or Audi....everyone else has those. Love this car....can't wait to get the Continental or 3.0 MKZ when my lease expires. Btw I'm 34 so their strategy may be working...two thumbs up!

I own this car with the turbo 4. I can pull 30mpg without a problem, if I keep my foot out of the turbo...around town, 20. I am 6ft 240lbs, a very comfortable fit for me. Friend Dave (6ft 3) went on a trip with me today, he had no problems with space...probably longer legs, shorter upper?
Definitely one of the nicest cars out there. Friend of mine has a Mercedes...as nice as it is, even he says 'wow.'...(to others who have passed the word back)...
The trunk.......a mixed pile for sure...love the auto open/close. It is not the biggest one on the market, but the space is usable enough.
There is one little trick most MKZ (I am finding) owners don't know. If you press and hold the 'lock' button down, on the remote, all windows & the roof will close...If you hit the 'unlock' and hold it down, all 4 windows open and the roof pops up, great for hot days and clearing it out...
Did you happen to find the small microfiber clothe they provide to clean the touch screen, it is in the glove box with the manual....

Nice, I bought a 2018 2.0L hybrid SELECT plus trim. Absolutely beautiful car. I love everything about it. I've gotten up to 50.3mpg and average 38.9 mpg. It depends on how you drive it. I was going to buy a Toyota Camay but this one is much more classy and fun to drive. Hope you have real success with it.
P.S. I had 2 Continentals 1997 and a 2002. I never had any unusual problems; Had the 2002 for 15 years until my wife hit a brick wall at 90mph and survived. They are safe too! Good luck.

The structural arch brace in the trunk is needed with the panoramic roof. Standard roof (with or w/o a moonroof) does not have that and is easier to load items in the trunk. I just got one for my wife. Favorite features: the auto-adjust that adjusts the seat, steering wheel, side mirrors, and rear view mirror to the pre-sets you have created (for two drivers). Great looking and quiet. The AWD and heated steering wheel are great. The light up door handles are sharp, too.

The "MKZed" is a really nice sedan. I wouldn't buy one new though. Buy a year or two old one and save yourself about 20 grand. It's a lot of car for the money, It's a sporty roomy midsize luxury car with a nice sized trunk. I can't embrace paying sn additional 10-20k more to get a "CUV".

Good detailed review. I like this and was unaware it was even available until recently. Sedans are more than fine, people have just gotten silly in their expectations. I have owned many different types of vehicles and if you like it buy it. I went from a Yukon Denali to an Audi A4 and didn't miss a beat. Truth is most of us driving the larger vehicles don't usually use them for their intended purpose 90% of the time. Just look around when you are driving and the vast majority have 1 or 2 people in them. Rarely does the whole family drive together these days with most families having two cars. I say buy what you like, you likely only live once and on those rare occasions when you are truly needing the extra space you can likely make it work. Why buy something boring to drive 100% of the time when you only need it 10% of the time....unless of course you like that, then have at er. keep up the honest detailed reviews :)

Great review, nice to see you driving by some of the areas in Calgary NW we drive by all the time.
This car is a game changer and is so much different then my 2008 MKZ that I loved but moved to a Fusion after the lease was done. 400 HP is exactly what people who have a family but still love to drive are looking for.
One of the biggest disappointments with this car though is how you can only get the huge sunroof on the 3.0 l or no sunroof roof at all. Some people don't want to spend the $3500 on the large roof but still want a sunroof. On the lower HP model you can have the smaller roof but on the 400 HP model it looks like you cant. I was suprized by this when i went to the dealership to look at them.
Being able to have such power and torque but such great fuel economy is a real positive about this vehicle.
The hard thing to balance is how you can get a Fusion sport with 325 HP, that has every option built into the price already (like Adaptive cruise that once you have you cant live without) to a vehicle that has so many levels and options. I would think Lincoln would want to make the vehicle more inclusive because the options you need to add, completely change the driving experience and deplete their ability to stand above whom they are directly competing against for market share.
One of the worst parts of buying a high end vehicle you are excited about is having to "pay extra" for things like colours, Technology packages, homelink, LED lights and many other items that should be included in a $50,000 to $65,000 vehicle. Especially when the sister brand has the same technology rolled in.
Styling wise this car and the new grill are super nice, and to know it can do 0 - 60 in about 5 seconds is something awesome to have in the back pocket ...

I'll never understand why the domestics have such an issue with interior space. The outside may be sizable, and it'll look huge on the inside from without, but American carmakers just don't know how to give their interiors comparable room. I was amazed at how cramped the MKZ I sat in was. These are NOT small cars, either. The ATS and CTS from Cadillac have the same problem.
    What gives here?

I have a 2016 with the 3.7 and AWD I absolutely love it! but I agree with needing more head room... and my regular sunroof equipped model doesn't have that extra reinforcing in the trunk it must be the large glass panel models that have that reinforcing it looks like it does take up a lot of room. The lexus is interior way out of this cars league in terms of quality.

Even now days younger people as I've seen drive the Lincoln Town Car of several different model years & design....ijs.

$68k CDN? Yikes, hearing that price tag from a Lincoln of all things is already a major turn-off.
Sorry but I frankly can't see anyone sane enough to fork over that much $ for a FWD-platform car. Lexus gets away with the ES350 & ES300h as the price never quite exceeds ~$55k no matter how much options you check, and the GS350 & GS450h are proper RWD platform luxury cars. 400hp in a sport sedan sounds tempting, but for $68k I can think of several different cars with much higher performance limits with a much more prestigious brand from Europe, Japan or even rival American brands (coughCTScough).

    • @FamilyWheels

Oh don't get me wrong the car is nice, but I think the asking price for a brand new one is a bit steep.
