MN99S brushless strong and fast

- I bought a MN99S because I wanted to convert it into brushless. My aim was to make it both fast and able to crawl. I rebuilt it so the frame and body sits 15 millimeter lower and the motor/gearbox sits 25 mm higher in the frame. The result is lower center of gravity and still about 10 mm more groundclearence than original. Steering servo is mounted on the front axle to eliminate bump steer. 2 speed WPL gearbox and a 4500 kv Racerstar brushless motor produce power that works well both at low and high speed. Wider wheels and modified shocks damped with thick diff oil make the car quite stable. I am positively surprised by the outcome!
oh wow that's manic! a very hyperactive car, and nicely modified. You do awesome mods and make cool creations, very factory looking... just *better*. Love the camera work too 👍⛅
Thank you very much, Carl! I love the expression "hyperactive". This car is exceptionally fun to drive, more fun that I thought it would be!
Yes - I was just thinking that I like the the camera work; I think it's because he moves the camera quite frequently, sites it nice and low, and gives us the occasional bit of POV footage.
Very good upgrade, it's really a great job. Great test run and crawling !!

Thank you very much, really glad you like it. This car is 3 years old now and still running good! 😊😊
The stock shocks, while primitive {they're just springs} offer a lot of articulation and the resulting bounciness just adds realism.
Your shock mod seems wholly appropriate for a hyper-speed D90 that jumps and takes spills though.

Thank you very much, really glad you like it! Yes, the gears change through a separate miniservo, that is supplied with the gearbpx, if you buy a WPL 2-speed gearbox. So you need a 3-channel radio to controll it, the gears change with channel 3. 😊😊

hi! just started in rc and this was really helpful and inspiring for me to start modifying it in performance instead of aesthetics. may i know what are the things that i need to buy in order to successfully convert mine into a brushless one? first time playing with the performance so kinda scared to destroy it
Hello! Thank you for watching and commenting and for your interest! It sounds like you have bought an MN 99s or similar car. To convert into brushless you need to buy some stuff, that´s clear... You need a brushless motor with esc and a radio to control it (the stock radio equipment does not work with brushless). I use a WPL 2-speed gearbox, which I would recommend, for both low and high speed performance. To control the gearbox the radio must have at least 3 channels. I have replaced the plastic gears with metal ones. You also need to replace the plastic driveshafts with metal ones. The stock lighting with turn signals and reverse lights will not work with a new radio so you must replace it also, if you want lighting on the car.
All this will cost you a little more than the car itself... If you are into the hobby for a while you can use the radio to control several cars - I control 4 to 6 cars with the same transmitter and several receivers, which holds the cost down. Here are links to equipment that is usable to convert the car. Good luck!

Nice rig! I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing. Wanted to add my 2 pennies worth to the debate around the noisy gear mesh. I think you have the grease covered but as others mentioned the mesh in the gearbox doesn't seem quite right. It may seem non adjustable but there are things you can do to adjust it, you could try different sized pinion gears and also you can physically move the motor position a mm or 2 in any direction it might just need to come back a hair also check the angle between the out put shaft and the gearbox that could also affect it. It's a very nice build with normal teathing issues (no pun intended) I am sure you will figure it 👍
Thank you for commenting and also for good advice. The gearbox actually became less noisy the more I drove the car, but i decided to examine the gearbox to see what I would find. Here is the result: ua-cam.com/video/AGFCfHLWyEI/v-deo.html
fantastic upgrade 👍👍 i need to do the same 😉😁
Thank you very much! Yes,I can recommend this modification. Good luck!😎
I have the same setup but facing motor cogging problem. Can you help me with that
Hello, sorry for late reply! If you have the same setup = 4500 kv brushless + WPL 2-speed gearbox, you should not have cogging problems if the motor is good. Maybe you have a faster motor, 5000 kv or more, that could cause cogging, at least if you start in high gear. The 4500 kv will also cog if you have a higher gearing than the WPL 2-speed. So: Not too high kv on the motor and not to high gearing in the gearbox, that´s the only advice I can give. 🤓🤓
Great job it is like hobby grade now, maybe if you pack the gearbox with grease will be quiet 💡🙂👍
Thank you very much! The gearbox is quite well greased, but maybe it´s the wrong sort of grease. I also have a set of metal gears to put in. They work quiet in another gearbox so they might also be more quiet in this... 😎
@@Georgieframe Try automotive grease number 2
@@carloshnunez Thanks, I`ll keep it in mind!👍
Same gearbox noise on my singlespeed
Well, some gearboxes make more noise than others, you don´t always know exactly why. This one became more quiet the more I drove the car. Then I also took it apart and gave the gears more grease, which reduced the noise but didn´t make it silent.

Yes, maybe. It sounds to me like the pinion is making the noise. It works fine but some day I´m going to take it apart and try to silence it with grease and, if necessary, another pinion. 😎
@@Georgieframe love your work though, especially the shocks, genius!
Can you tell me if the stock esc works with the new motor setup or does it need an upgrade too?
@@richardmayo6076 This new motor is brushless so it needs a brushless esc. I bought motor and esc as a combo, they are often sold that way. This also means you need another radio to control the esc. When using a 2-speed gearbox the radio must have three channels, where the third channel shifts the gears.
@@Georgieframe thanks Georgie, not sure which route to take as starting to get quite expensive with all the new kit!😂

Tutoral for installing the 4500kv motor with 2speed gearbox please🥺
Hello! Thank you for watching my video! I haven´t made a tutorial myself, but I found this from another hobbyist that I think is very good and informative. In the video he says that he heated the pinion to be able to take it off and to mount it on the new motor. And that is, in my experience, necessary. I use a small gas torch gun for this. Be careful to not heat the motor, just the brass pinion! It´s a little tricky but it works. Link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/TXJQvaqBaRg/v-deo.html
did you upgrade electronics? Does the stock ESC works with brushless motor upgrade?
Hello! The stock esc does not work with brushless stuff. I use a 3 channel radio from Austar and bought a Racerstar 2838 motor and esc combo from Banggood. This one: www.banggood.com/Racerstar-2838-Sensorless-Waterproof-Motor-3600-or-4500KV-35A-ESC-For-1-or-12-1-or-14-Cars-p-1056318.html?cur_warehouse=CN&ID=518005&rmmds=search
Hello i want more torque to my mn99s and my question is: if the 2 speed gearbox help getting more torque and if yes can you show how to install it
Hello! Yes a 2-speed gearbox deliver both more torque and speed as it has a low and a high gear. To install it is rather simple: Remove the body off the chassis to access the motor/gearbox unit. Remove 3 screws on each side of the unit. Put the 2-speed motor/gearbox unit there and mount with the same 3 screws on each side. BUT, and that´s a big BUT, you also need to change the radio/esc equipment as you need a 3-channel radio to control the gearshift. That also means you can´t use the standard lights, with turnsignals, backlight and so, that I guess you have on your 99S. You also must change the driveshafts as, if I remenber right, the standard driveshafts are fixed to the gearbox and front/rear axles.
An easier way to get more torque is, as I se it, to mount a single speed metal gearbox with 370 motor. It fits right into the chassis and I´m sure you can just plug it into the stock radio/esc unit. You still have to replace the driveshafts though. Link to a singlespeed gearbox that will fit:
www.banggood.com/sv/search/all-metal-gearbox-wpl.html?from=nav
@Georgieframe okay but can i install 2 speed gearbox and manually change gears?
@@_.hondziarz._2203 Yes, I guess you can, if you make some kind of lever or tool to lock it in low gear. Hopefully the stock MN esc is powerful enough to feed the 370 motor that comes with the 2-speed box, but there´s no guarantee... I enclose a link to the 2-speed gearbox where you can se how it looks. If I remember right the coilspring on the gearshift rod keeps it in high gear, so you must invent a way to lock it in low gear.

Hello! These are the stock wheels but they are widened. The tyre diameter is 77 millimeters and the rims (stock) are 24 millimeters wide. I have glued 3/4 of a WPL rim to each wheel, which adds 12 mm and makes them 36 mm wide.

Thank you for your interest!
How does 2speed works on the gearbox? And what kind of brushless motor you put? Or just 3300kv with 50mm length?
I use the 2 speed gearbox sold by WPL, that fits most of their cars. The gears are shifted with a micro servo, that comes with the gearbox, so you need a 3-channel radio to operate it. I use this brushless motor/esc combo: www.banggood.com/Racerstar-2435-Waterproof-Brushless-Sensorless-Motor-45004800KV-25A-ESC-For-116-118-RC-Car-p-1069989.html?rmmds=myorder&cur_warehouse=CN
Have you adjusted the motor or gears in the gearbox? Sounds like the gear mesh is too tight.
This was the first drive with the brushless setup and maybe it needed a little running in. It´s not as noisy now when I have been driving it some time. I have compared it to my MN45 that has similar gearbox and a brushed highspeed motor and the 45 makes more noise. It´s the whising kind of noise that sounds normal for this sort of gearbox, but it is actually louder than the 99. The mesh in the gearbox is fixed, so there´s no way to adjust it. 😎
I've got the same model and I'm trying to kick it out I just got some new lights for it but I'm trying to get a brushless motor that will fit and from what I see you've done great I also need to put soldering wire around the tire rim to keep the weight down low like RC sparks says
Thank you very much for watching! With the WPL 2-speed gearbox on the car it´s rather easy to fit a brushless motor. Mine is 4500 kv and it works well. Another easy alternative is to mount a 2-speed gearbox, keep the stock 370 motor and run it with 3s lipo. A third alternative is to use the black RBR/C high speed brushed motor that comes with the metal gear set you can buy for the 2-speed gearbox. That motor comes with pinion mounted for an instant change of motors.😎
Hey dude, Im just getting started with rc cars, I know what Single speed is but is 2 speed like "variable speed"?
Hello! 2-speed is a gearbox with high and low gear, just like on a real car - though a real car usually has 4, 5 or 6 gears. This one have 2. You need a radio with 3 channels, where the 3:rd channel shifts the gears. WPL sells 2-speed gearboxes complete with motor. They work good!

im so glad im not the only one to mount the servo on axle, i used an old fishing hook box and superglue tho so nowhere near as elegant.

@@Georgieframe cheers for the link, i cant believe its so inexpensive : D
i assume ill need a new esc and radio for the gearbox though right?
@@Numbertwo22 Yes, you ned a 3 channel radio - third channel for shifting gears - and an esc. WPL sells the RES V3, radio, esc and soundcontroller all in one. Thats an easy solution if you want to use the stuff on just one car. I prefer using a separate radio and esc, that way you can change only esc if there´s any problem with it and with a 40 or 60 amps esc you can use 3 s lipo = more speed. Many radios also allows binding to more than one reciever so you can buy extra receivers and use the same radiotransmitter to control more than one car. I use my transmitters to control two to seven cars each. Saves space on the shelf! The downside with using separate receiver and esc is that it takes up more space in the car though!
