  • This explains how I decided what External Wall Insulation to buy as I see if I can instal it myself.
    Previous videos showed how I prepared the walls by moving the pipes, electrics and hose pipe tap.
    The next videos will show how I get on actually installing the insulation.
    Do let me know if any questions or comments.

    Inspirational series, and one I am going to study at length before embarking on my own project. My only sticking point is in picking the insulation material. I had already considered something like 60mm thick Kingspan Cooltherm K5, but a few on UA-cam have talked about using insulation with an open cell structure instead. Thoughts?

    Finally an honest person who understands what is required to get the insulation done externally. Can I ask please? Would it be possible to get a copy of your list of requests that I will need to get my home insulated. Thank you very much Desmond

      Hi Desmond, Thanks for this. Are you looking for the list of products I needed to put all this up? If so, you can see the list starting at 1:02 in this video: 3. How I worked out what DIY External Wall Insulation to buy

      Also, you can get in touch with the EWI Store ( ewistore.co.uk/?mh_matchtype=p&mh_keyword=ewi%20store&mh_adgroupid=151785779919&mh_network=g&gbraid=0AAAAADhexNgk4LLym2AOGzhJpEEpOhLD-&gclid=CjwKCAjwseSoBhBXEiwA9iZtxkQpcWCLW5xEuhdG_BD1mtSR4tstEQCQYCHETmDnY1RT6Uk2zeMjuBoCOckQAvD_BwE ). They should be able to advise you about what you need.
      I hope this helps

    Did you need to involve Building Control at any point? If so which bits were they most interested in? How did you calculate the thickness of insulation required also (90mm?).
    Thanks for sharing your journey, I’m going to attempt something similar next year and videos like this are a big help.

      Good questions. I had building control coming in anyway as I was converting my garage. They were interested in the thickness and u-value and whether the insulation would totally cover the walls (not sure why on the coverage question).
      But there were no difficult questions or requirements.

      I went for the thickest Kingspan k5 I could get for a reasonable price. That was 70mm. It has slightly better u value than standard insulation of 100mm so I decided that should be good enough. Being 30mm thinner makes it a bit easier to instal and look a little less obvious.

    Nice video. I am mainly insulating internally for my project. What insulation have you got for below damp???? (couldn't see on the list) and also the Kingspan - who was the supplier?

      @aktsolar  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! I have 30mm XPS for below the damp course although I’m thinking I might make this thicker - e.g. double it. And I bought everything from EWI Store except the notched trowel and speed skim that were much cheaper at Screwfix

    External wall insulation is something I've been looking into. The pointing on the side of our house is knackered and I'm considering going down this route as opposed to repointing the entire side, which would cost min £4k. Can I ask how much you're expecting the materials to work out at on a square meter basis?

    • @aktsolar
      @aktsolar  Рік тому

      It’s about 100 square metres so I think around £50 / square metre. It’d be quite a lot cheaper with less loss from off-cuts around the windows or with generic insulation board rather than Kingspan.

    Are you planning to do the rendering also once installed? Looking forward to seeing this progress

    • @aktsolar
      @aktsolar  Рік тому +2

      Yes, I did get a quote from the same person for rendering only that was £10,000 so I’m certainly planning to do it myself.
      I’m going to get a 10mm notched trowel and 90cm speedskim to help make sure it’s the right thickness and has a nice finish.
      I’m also going to start off practising on a section below the bay window where it won’t be so noticeable if it’s not perfectly smooth.
      I’ll keep posting videos and do let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

    Share your list and supplier details

      I’m not sure I can share a scan of the inventory here. But you can see the list on the video from 59 seconds to 1:14. And the supplier was EWI Store.

    Just wait for regular +5 overnight before you put it on. Otherwise you will have problems with it cracking and falling off later

      Thanks, that’s helpful. It’s now fairly warm but raining. So it seems I now need to wait for it to be dry (and above freezing) for at least 12 hours so I can paint on the primer. Then I need at least 24 hours above 5C for fixing the boards - although then it can rain a bit… Hopefully I can at least get some boards up by the end of this week :)

      @@aktsolar i honestly wouldn't take the risk in winter. Wet and warm or cold and dry. Do a proper job end of march, that render needs to be perfect.

      Thanks for the advice - I am starting to see the challenges of the weather - first it was too cold for priming, fixing and rendering. Now it’s warm enough but too wet! I’m still hoping to be able to prime and fix some boards below that window before Christmas though :)

    Probably the worst insulation 9n the market. Have you heard about Kingspan and Grenfell?

    • @stigkrakpants3052
      @stigkrakpants3052 Рік тому +1

      probably the worst comment 9n the world. You are confusing two utterly different materials in two utterly different setting, stick to your crochet Mike oBodge.
