  • In my first class with Layne Redmond
she had us get entrained through stepping, clapping and voice.
She wanted us to experience rhythm in our bodies before
we even put our drums in our hands.
These have been foundational practices for me personally
and for our in person class meetings especially for the Circle Song series that prepared us to walk, drum and sing together.
I created an online 3 week series of the practices without drums called
STEPPING IN RHYTHM DEVELOPING A SENSE OF TIME: Weaving rhythm through stepping, hands and voice.
They are live recorded classes from last year
I love these practices and we launch off with some of Layne's exercises. I then like to weave in melody as well.
So you don't need a drum or any experience to get a taste of embodying rhythm in this way.
Though if you already drum, these a great to learn and prepare you to be able to walk, drum and weave voice.
The video below shares more about the series.

So glad that you’re teaching this! It is the foundation of all that we learned from Layne, and to this day, I still step, clap, and chant rhythms with students, no matter what I’m teaching, and I personally cannot play any instrument without stepping in Time! Keeps me on the Pulse, and keeps me entrained with the other musicians. Bravo, Miranda! 🌟🙌🏽🌟

Love that we still teach the stepping! Thank you for keeping it going and acquiring the skills needed to both play, drum, talk and teach simultaneously!!

@@FrameDrumCircleSongs long ago on his late night tv show, there would occasionally be a segment called Stupid Human Tricks. He’d have someone come on, who’d perfected the craziest act, typically something no one else would’ve thought of, let alone practiced to do well. Was a talented person showing an unusual physical act of some kind.
I think of stepping, clapping, chanting, then why not let’s layer on more, like put something on my head that rattles and something on my hips that jingle, and let’s see what else we can add, and get multiple layers of body percussion... 😉

@@BarbaraGail_drum_song_dance love that explanation. Very cool! Yeah I love your thinking. I have similar thoughts! Why not add movement, dance, ankle bells.
      Thanks for sharing!!
