The great Alan Parsons on the board, mixing and producing all these wonderful sounds. It’s refreshing to see Hollywood know more about a song than Smokey for a change. Need to do Pink Floyd more often. Maybe next song you could do is One Slip. There’s a great live video from the Nassau Coliseum in 1988.
I could be wrong.. Wasn't it A blockbuster release of the album era, it also propelled record sales throughout the music industry during the 1970s. The Dark Side of the Moon is certified 14 times platinum in the United Kingdom, and topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart, where it has charted for 981 weeks...
Not the 80s. 73, composed in 72. Dick Perry on the sax, he also plays on Us and Them on Dark Side of the Moon, on epic Shine on You Crazy Diamond, live in the Pulse 94 show, and later in David Gilmour’s live shows in the 2000s. Not an official member of the band, but his contributions are so iconic. He is a huge part of Pink Floyd. Also, I get the discussion about rap music and money, but this song needs to be taken in the context of the album. It is social commentary, which you only really get until you listen to the album straight through on its entirety
Listen to the OG poster of this comment. Dark Side of the Moon is honestly one giant long song and IMHO it is purposefully taking you for a ride. Like a journey. But yes, it's social commentary. Great Gig in the Sky is an emotional twister for sure and there are no lyrics.
First song I ever learned how to play. Freshman year of high school, I thought I had to bring my own guitar in for class and I only had a bass. I walk in to see everyone with acoustic guitar, felt pretty out of place. Luckily tho, the teacher was a bassist in a band with some of the other teachers. He would pull me aside during practice time and teach me about the bass and great bass players and first song he taught me was Money. I also met my wife in his class. Thank you for all the great things in my life Mr. Wall.
The "money money money" is from the 1973 song For the love of Money by The O'Jays. Theres been quite a few covers including one by The Bullet Boys in the late 80's. It was a hit for both.
There's a UA-cam of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" over the end of Stanley Kubrics movie 2001 A Space Odyssey And the extended sound-scape section fits perfectly over the technicolour trippy part of the movie
Maaaan..... Pink Floyd was second in my favorite shows I've been honored to attend! Saw them on The Division Bell tour in 94 and it was an event more than a concert! They played Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety - all was right with the world
Pulse tour,October 1994. Earls Court, west London. In my 69years,I’ve attended thousands of concerts, either working those gigs or just as a fan,but that show…….wow, just fucking wow. Easily the best show I’ve ever seen.
"The Dark Side of Oz," I had a class in college that asked us to list all the coincidences that we found. The MGM lion roars three time in the open. If you start the CD on each of the roars, you get different coincidences. We were part of an "ongoing experiment" that he had run each since starting teaching.
This isn’t anything about the song, but The Wizard of Oz color is original. They wanted to shock the audience with the switch from black and white to color as it was one of the first movies to be viewed in color in 1939.
I fell in love with this band before I could even talk, according to my parents 😂 my Dad loved Pink Floyd, and growing up hearing all their albums on vinyl loud enough to shake the whole house! Thank you for reacting to this, cause the nostalgia always kicks my mood into chill-mode ❤🙂❤️
Love this song, always reminds me of my dad he loved Floyd and took our family to see roger waters a few times. I can almost hear my dad singing along 😄
It is about money, to all working people, who don't have it all easy. But, it was to Pink Floyd a protest song for those businessmen in the music indudtry that make money off the real talented musicians, management teams, producers who take a lot of money from the talent of those talented musicians who write, play, sing all the songs, albums, tours. The music business people are greedy, get rich off others talents. Genre: Rock n roll, but with a bluesy, funky soul to it. The Sax player on this song is a featured Dick Parry who has toured and played on several Floyd songs, albums. This album toured in early 72 9r 73 in Canada, so it may have been released in 72, I think I saw this concert in early 73, with an unknown band opening called Jethro Tull. Was an awesome concert.
Lived with my older brother & his wife when he was in college in San Francisco. We didn’t have much $ but he managed to get 2 tickets to see Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon at the Cow Palace in 1975 for my 14th birthday! I went with my older sister. THIS song live was unbelievable!
Everybody knows with the Darkside of Oz is Hollywood,, but yes, Smokey is right that’s the part of the movie when it goes from black-and-white to Technicolor LMAO hey Hollywood, I’m just a trash talker but I love you guys LMAO 🤘🏼🤘🏼
sax is richard wright on keys or a session sax player for albums and a local for tours. edit:obviously not sayin now. but what i remember from movies/vids/docs.

Do ECHOES from Pink Floyd Live In Pompeii! During the Dark Side Of The Moon recording period, Floyd went to an amphitheater in ancient ruins to put on a concert for no one. Just Roger, Rick, Nick & Dave. And you. Fantastic to see them at the height of their powers, in the prime of their youth, united as band, before all the personal drama and division. Funky. Stanky face funky. Trippy, as expected. Beautiful. That's ECHOES (Parts 1 & 2). From nineteen-seventy-something. You ain't ready. So get ready.
If anything, Pink Floyd's "genre" would fall under what us jurassic audiophiles have known as 'AOR' (Album Oriented Rock). That being their music was generally heard on FM radio stations, rarely crossing over to AM radio where you get Top 40 pop music.
If anyone has the opportunity to see Brit Floyd or Australian pink Floyd (what ever they are called now) go!!! Worth every cent! You know when a song is great when hollywood starts his dancing!
I was super lucky to catch Aussie Pink Floyd back in '15 or '16 .. OMG they are amazing!! They are about to come back to the USA and I already got Tix for june. Them and Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade doing Animals the same night!!
@@Idellphany NICE!!!! I saw them in 2010 I think. They were still called Australian pink Floyd. Great show but our seats were in direct line with the lasers lol.
That "second guitar solo that starts around 10:47. It's like David Gilmour's saying "Oh, I ain't done yet, mo'fo's!" This album is in a time capsule, it's that important. People in 100 years will have their minds blown. Saw the tour in 1973. It was,a life, changing experience. ✌🌻🌻
Wizard of Oz was 1939 & DSoM was 1973. It is amazing the coincidences between the movie and songs, esp. when you consider some are on the 3rd time thru the album (“home, home again” as Dorothy wakes up).
Fun Fact - most of the song was done in 7/8 time, the exception being the guitar solo and the ending. Gilmour said he couldn't figure out how to do the 7/8 solo, so they switched it to 4/4. At the end, grooved right back into 7/8 time, then back into 4/4 for the ending of the tune.

I think of it as psychedelic prog rock. I mean most of that song is in a 7/4 time signature. And the use of all the sound effects. But it also wonderfully incorporates just a really groovy Blues Soul jam kind of thing, it's great. Love that saxophone tambre.

The song Smokey is singing is For The Love of Money by The Ojays
1973. The Sax you hear is played by Dick Parry. You can even watch him live with Floyd at Pulse 1994 and Reunion 2005.
The O'Jays... "For the Love of Money ".
