Leonid is absolutely genius. He doesn't get the sheet music from Chicago or anyone else. He listens to each and every song by himself and then writes the score for each and every instrument himself by what he hears. That goes for all the brilliant covers that they do. He produces and arranges everything himself! Bravo! What an incredible band and beautiful music. All your guys in the band rock!
I'm crying tears of joy listening to this, binge watching over and over, Leonid and Friends, you are truly GOAT, Im 73 but listening to this im 18 again, love it.
This was written by Chicago drummer Danny Sarafin. On November 22, 2019, in Las Vegas, Leonid & friends played this song. In the audience was Danny Sarafin, and he sat in and played along during the song! Wonderful!!
Wow! I knew he played with them but didn’t realize he wrote this song!
I played trumpet in school, so I've hit a few high notes, but THAT was the highest note I've ever heard played on a trumpet. Amazing! And, he's no young man.
I love Serge’s voice! So plaintive. Sandoval is mind blowing! This entire production is spectacular. ❤
FYI: Leonid did a search for a unique voice to cover the "Cetera" parts. Serge won by tape submission and you might notice that he is not in the same studio as the others because he would record his parts in his own studio in Kyiv. Of course, after the Russian invasion, he left the band, but he continues to perform in Kyiv. We miss him.
I got turned on to these folks early on in the pandemic by another UA-camr. Simply blown away by how faithful they are to the original recordings, all transcribed by ear by Leonid! They've played live near me in Michigan 2-3 times and while I've yet to be able to attend, I hold out hope to see them as they tour the U.S. frequently and have really built up quite a large fan base. Thanks for covering them as much as you have.
Street Player by Leonid and Friends is WAY BETTER than the original recording and the trumpet solo by Arturo Sandoval is AMAZING! The original Chicago trumpet solo was basic at best. Arturo is THE BEST TRUMPET PLAYER IN THE WORLD! He took the solo to the Moon! Your face reaction at the triple octave says it all. LOL. Leonid and Friends is the BEST BAND performing in the WORLD!
Maynard did the first solo on that track
Agreed! ❤
Agree...I used to just listen and select music and songs for radio musicals....I have listed to countless bands and all sorts of popular music.
Peter Cetera has a far better vocal on the original, the horns are better on this cover, it's a shame it's so poorly mixed
I agree. That's one hell of a trumpet solo from an excellent artist. But I have the sneaky feeling Andrey Zyl - as a winner of several jazz-competitions - would also have been able to play that trumpet-solo to an extraordinary standard. Leonid is sure spoilt for choice.
Wow, this is like the perfect cover!! All cylinders running perfectly, rhythm section, horns, vocals, the groove, just exceptional!! ❤️🤘🏻
Right?! Killer stuff!
As you may have gathered, this was one of their earlier songs. This was one of the few songs where Serge, the vocalist, was actually with the band during recording. He is Ukranian and most of his parts on other songs were recorded in his own studio there.
L & F lo mejor de lo mejor. No se cansa uno de escuchar sus temas musicales.
Awww man! Thanks for reviewing this one! This is my favorite Chicago cover that Leonid and Friends do. This is near perfection... Keep them coming, there are a lot of Leonid and Friends songs that'll impress!
Amazing musicians. Auturo Sandoval , wow! Too bad the war in Ukaine has hurt this group. Serge Tiagniryadno (main vocal) is back in Kiev, Ukraine.
Love L&F...all their musicians are superb...singers are 💥💥💥💥. Leonid is the best......
This may be one of my favorites from them. Maybe it's because the original was never really on my radar, in spite of being a huge Chicago fan. The horns though.. amazing. I come back to this song regularly.
Tbh, I didn't think a lot of the original album cut. I know it's almost cliche to compliment tribute band versions as better than the original - but of all of Leonid's performances, their rendition of Street Player is much better than the original.
YES!!!!! One of my favs! Honestly, I have listened to no other music since discovering them 4 years ago! Watching you appreciate them brings me joy every week! For the old stuff.....Question 67 and 68 and Beginnings need to come up soon....I've Been Searching so Long too. You know what? ... why don't you just lock your self in a room and play the entire playlist and enjoy!
These artists go to places within their music that can only be imagined by most. The incredible thing is that they take y'all along with them! Pure magic!
On the original recording, Maynard Ferguson played the trumpet solo. Thanks for posting this, it's one of my fav Chicago songs. If you want to hear an incredible trumpet section, listen to the 70's group Chase. Check out their instrumental song called, "Open Up Wide." You won't believe the high notes all 4 guys hit.
That was nothing short of spectacular. Wow. What a groove they put down.
Maynard played on the original track. He had a recording session for his album "Hot" at the same day same studio building. He was invited to jam with them. What a good sport and fine man MF was.
Maynard was the king of high notes. It’s funny that my mind went to Maynard when I watched this and I had no idea that Maynard was the original player on this track. 😄
@@StrateleStudios ..it shows your deep knowledge and feeling for music. I love watching fellow musicians like you. Even after 40 years i am learning so much everyday.
Leonid & Friends are outstanding live. Go see them you won't be sorry the whole group are beasts at what they do. I saw them this past fall in Anderson, IN
I'm not real familiar with this song either but they nailed it. I'm blown away by Serge's vocals 😊, it's nice seeing him in Moscow for this one. I've never heard of Arturo Sandoval but WOW! 😮 that solo was amazing! How did he hit that last note?🤔 Your analysis is spot on. Love this band!
Right Brad! Serge vox are so damn good!
Can see why their music on You Tube gets millions of views
You just don't see this quality is talent and performance this great.... since the 1980s. this is a perfect performance to a perfect song.
That trumpet solo went in to whistle mode! WOW the complexity and spot on timing is amazing.
😄👏

What I love about the musicians with Leonid is their crispness on every note. 👍❤️👍
I love Arturo at the end ....totally exhausted
these guys could play the yellow pages and make it sound phenomenal!
Top Notch. What a Band. There Great in Everything They Do. 😊❤😮. Pete sr
Oh boy! Very excited to see your reaction to this song! I knew the horns would get cha! Leonid and his “friends” are beyond amazing. I totally get a kick out of watching your jaw drop. 😂
Thanks for this one.
They really did get me! 🥰
You are my favorite reactor! More Chicago/ Leonid please.... I love your insight, im also a musician.
Thank you my brother! 🫶
Not my favorite Chicago tune of all time, but I definitely just changed my favorite scream trumpet player of all time from Maynard to Arturo...wow!!!! Second favorite is still darn good, of course. And as a former trombone player, I totally appreciate the trombone licks in this chart. I'm seconding my own "wow!"
Absolutely Phenomenal
Leonid and Friends make my heart smile! I have tickets in May to see them at a 300 seat venue in Annapolis Md.!
The look on your face when Arturo hit that ultimate high note was priceless. Each of the band members has their own fascinating history as professionals. Bringing Arturo in as a guest was certainly appropriate. Cuban born and raised, Arturo defected to America at age 40 with the help of his friend and mentor Dizzy Gillespie, becoming an American citizen ten years later. Ten Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, playing with many of the world's best orchestras, and playing at the White House, his resume is amazing. Arturo has even has a motion picture made of his life. On November 20, 2013, President Barack Obama presented Sandoval with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Arturo is a legend and a great fit for Leonid & Friends.
Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea. 😊
Have you seen them do Fantasy by Earth Wind & Fire yet and also Ksonia Busina the female backup and lead vocalist sing the song One Last Cry
My goodness, they all were on FIRE!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤯🤩💃🏼🥰 And incredible horn section+trumpet solo … phew!!😃🫠🫠😃. Just what we needed, right?!💃🏼🕺🏻🎵🎶🥰💚🌱🌱🌱
Thank you so much for the request + this wonderful reaction💚🤗.
Once again were you dancing Lise?! I want video if you were! 💃🏻
Ohhh🙈💃🏼💃🏼🪩💃🏼💃🏼🙈😆😂😂😅
One more thing to mention. This was also covered very well by Hindley Street Country Club. You might want to check out their work as well. They have been more diverse in the work they cover and have equal quality musicians/singers to boot.
Always great to see another of your reactions to L&F waiting to view. As for this particular cover, every time I think I've spent too much time listening to it, I hear it again and realize that will never happen. How can these people be so good? I see they're working on another offering for the (near?) future.
Yes many more to come. I can’t get enough of this group!
I was looking forward to this one...
Listen INTRODUCTION…the best!
I mean! what??!!! The best ever! love these guys and hope to see them live soon.
Нет слов.. Непостижимо, бесподобно.
Leonid and Friends again ??? What a surprise !!!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
With Mr. Arturo Sandoval in addition!!! What a summit meeting!!! What did I say ? No, this is a mythical encounter!
Well! Jeff when are you turning your office into a dance floor???
😂🤣😂 I was thinking, I bet they are gonna make me get up and dance on one of these! 😂
@@StrateleStudios Sure !!!
The cool thing about L&F is that every time you think you've heard it all from them, they come out with something new, different and better. This is still my favorite though.
I'm a great admirer of Leonid & Co. Ever since I recently came across this band I've been scouring every single cover they have made from Chicago to EWF, every single piece has been nothing short of perfection guys, a class act to look up to really!
Can't wait for more material to be honest but I have to give credit where credit is due and every single member of the band is exceptionally amazing in their respective craft instrument or the vocalists.
Dare I say they shine in the clips way more than Leonid does but he's the master of the show so I'm certain the fact that they have been a super success and pushing these artists out their is his contempt.
What amazed me in this band that as a Russian band, their vocal covers have been a mile higher than the native vocals they are covering! 😅
Honestly there's soo soo much about this band to speak of, its just not going to be enough to type about it sufficiently.
Great tracks, great arrangement, great everything!!!!!!!! 🎉
My brother turned me on to this band, or collaboration maybe? It was when their first performances hit UA-cam and the precision blew me away. I sent my android off to Amazon and had it buy me an L&F t-shirt they just keep on proving that they are a world class band. I have loved the horn bands since Al Kooper's original Blood Sweat and Tears. If I'm not mistaken, the Brecker brothers were in that band... love L&F's cover of the Tower of Power songs, and does anyone remember a band named Pacific Gas and Electric? They had a song called Are You Ready. I don't if know L&F have covered it, but I liked it a lot.
I have to ask a serious question. Does it get any better than this? Really good. I just can not get enough of Leonid and Friends.
I can’t imagine 😂
This horn arrangement was a note for note transcription of Chicago trombonist James Pankow's original horn arrangement...
🤯
You have it spot on. The Horn Arrangement is insane! The song was originally done by Rufus and was co-written by Danny Seraphine (drummer) of Chicago. It was the only "Disco" song recorded by Chicago. In my opinion, Chicago's version was much better. The horns would most likely have been arranged by James Pankow (Trombonist) of Chicago. The Midway horn shout out was pretty close to the original. Honestly, I think L&F did it better. Love this piece.
Jimmy Pankow’s horn arrangements for Chicago were always great.
From Chicago 13
Incredible band. Some lineup changes since this posted. Thank the war for that , sadly. Still going strong though. LOVE LaF
You are great, high spirits, thank you
Thank you my friend! 😊
If you have a few spare moments, the lead singer does have his own youtube channel, and the last time I looked him up, he was posting regularly. Also he was posting a livestream on Wednesdays during at least the early parts of the war.
Awsome review. Love to see you enjoy the talent of both this band and...obviously...the original Chicago band that came out with these songs to begin with. Great hearing old songs with today's recording technology.....nice combination. Keep going with L&F!!
Thank you Bill! 😊
You are welcome. Love to hear your take on the subtle nuances of the songs....things a lot of people usually don't recognize.
@@billoneil6594 you are exactly the kind of viewer I hope to connect with on here. Thank you so much!
Ever wondered if Leonid could get a full orchestra A speck of Dust answers that question
Awesome dude
This band takes this tune to another level. That is baddd😁
The Great Arturo Sandoval on the trumpet solo…none better!
Wow!! That’s just crazy good!
I don't feel so bad now that I'm not the only one who hadn't heard this song before. But I still feel a little bad that I'm not as well versed as I thought I was.
This must have been before the 2022 war, seeing Serge T is the same studio as Ksenia etc. Thanks Jeff for spreading the sounds of Leonid & Friends! Lovely to see a professional music Producer waxing lyrical about my favorite band!
Give a listen to a live version of this song or any from L&F to see there energy, excitement, love they have in there performing. Don't see much of that anymore now a days!!!
👍
I recommend Alive again Pabst theater 4:11 about 4 minutes long & Highly recommend Leonid in concert 2023 video by J&R Deptula about 20 minutes!! Do your self a favor listen & enjoy 👊 ✌️
Andre Zyl, the lead trumpet player, is one of the best lead trumpet players in the world! I've played with a lot fo them, and he's just the best.
this was the song that turned me onto these guys in 2018-as I said on your other video they are amazing!
Impressive !!!
WoW !!!
whilst Michael Puntov has a voice and can sing other stuff that suits him thie guy Serge had a Peter Cetera type style and voice which is sorely missed hence they that is L&F won't do these types of songs anymore
Reaction to “the Speck the dust”
If they ever figure out how to clone Kesina,
I’m getting in line……
That will be a very long line my friend 😂
Great reaction, I really enjoy your insightful comments and obvious musical knowledge, and I would really like to see you react to their very first video, "Brand new love affair parts I and II", I believe you would like part II especially.
I have a feeling I’ll be doing all of their videos hahaha
…and thank you!!!
Gotta do 25 or 6 to 4. Incredible!!!!
Great voice! The tru 3:21 3:21 mpeter is like "get out of here"!
always great choices💯
Arturo brought tears to my eyes….
I was a huge Rufus/Chaka Khan fan and had their 'Street Player' Album. Chicago attenuated the funk of the original(which is great on its own) and boosted the horns, and extended to something like an 8 min track on Chicago13. There were no real hits on that album because the real hit was this song but got no airplay at that length...and the critics panned it. As a trumpet player myself(and owning a few 2b 2c mouthpeices of his design) I was in awe of Maynard's solo. Leonid has taken this song to the highest level of anyone to record it.. by far. Don't miss Leonid's genius by selecting a former Cuban street player to solo. I also think Sergey T(lead) sings better when in studio and not remote in Kyiv. I think I would sing better too..next to the Apple.
😂🤣😂👏👏👏🫶
@@StrateleStudiospretty sure that @3:23 Andrey hits a dbl hi natural b, and Arturo hits an E natural above super C at the end of the solo. Crazy clean as well .
@@TheoSmith249 and the dude is 74 years old!!!
@@StrateleStudiosthats impressive. Arturo is a monster on the horn. Andrey Zyl, no slouch either. I could yak about this groups impressive talent all day. Even that transition where the piano and bass cuts as an intro for Sergey K on the electric is soooo nice.
Damn!
Rufus and Chaka Khan recorded this before Chicago btw 😊
Beyond amazing as usual ❤
They must come to the Quechan casino in Yuma Arizona. That's all I have to say. I'll even be their VEHICLE!!
If you can travel they usually play in the Fall in Gilbert, AZ. Otherwise try to catcher them at the Belly Up in the San Diego area.
@@davidbrownstein1464 thank you SO MUCH for the info!!
They are an incredible band, saw them in Atlanta and they are indeed one hell of an act. They sound better than Chicago does today. Sad that Serg is not with them right now with the Ukraine war going on. Great post !
Maynard was the first solo on that track
Really? Oh man I shoulda known. 😃
Dizzy was a massive influence on Arturo, and he had a Night in Tunisia quote in his solo. Another screamer trumpet player from Maynard's Kenton era, when Maynard could really play high, was Cat Anderson of the Duke Ellington band. Find some of that if you want to hear a screaming trumpet before modern teaching methods helped players learn how to play high efficiently. If you're looking for a young player with fantastic high technique, check out Louis ("Louie") Dowdeswell and his collabs with Wayne Bergeron.
They also cover tower of power so very hard to go to perfection
The Dimitri from Paris remixes are THE definitive versions of this.
You Guys are Great
Did you hear a few notes from "A night in Tunisia" towards the end of the rumpet solo??😁
Hahaha just went back and listened again, you’re totally right?! 😂👏👏👏
I was wondering if you could review the Kennedy Center Honor for Carole King where Aretha Franklin signs Natural Woman for one of the last times prior to her death. I think you would enjoy
This is the only Disco song Chicago made.
No offense to Chicago (whom I am a huge fan of) but Leonid's rendition is better than the original recording.
Igor is the best drummer. Please check out L& F cover of I’m a man
Yet Arturo claims that he never works on his upper register.... How is this possible?
There is definately Tower Of Power esk influence in the horn arrangement. Chicago's earlier horn arrangements were not as intricate as Street Player
We all know they’re good and you like them. Are you going to review all of their videos. Check out no apology. They are also Russian. Hard rock
No
who knew the Russians would be saving the best of American music culture like the Japanese are collecting and saving our Vinyl era of what was good.
Correct me if I am wrong, but most of the singers in this group are singing phonetically. I have heard many of them speak during backstage videos and their english is not great with thick Russian. Ksenia is one of the few who speaks Perfect english in addition to Chinese and several more Languages Fluently
That horn section is dynamite. It makes a big difference. Chicago 's song is not better than this cover.
ATENTION JEFF !!!!!! ( IMPORTANT because I think that nobody there know this ...II'm a Professional musician and read this please!!!!
JEFF... you don't know who is this Trumpet Player who play the solo ????????? Is The famous Cuban" Arturo Sandoval ",,,one of the best trumpet players in the world Arturo play with them here in New Jersey from he's home in Line true there in Russia ,,,,amazing or what
That’s weird why would you think I didn’t know who it was?
@@StrateleStudios I follow you for so long and sometimes happen but with my mayor respect and humble... I tell you OK God bless you brother,,,
Of course I know who Arturo Sandoval is. Even at the beginning of the video I say something about the musician better be good to be playing with Arturo. I’ve listen to him for decades that why I was wondering how I gave you impression I didn’t know who he was. 😄

I had to tune in for the second time on your website. I LOVE the look on your face on Arturo's solo, especially at the 3rd octave. LMAO! AWESOME! Better than the original Chicago!
Hahaha I was like “No way!!!” 😆
