  • Sherburn-in-Elmet Level Crossing, Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire on the Dearne Valley Line and Hull to York Line.
    Location: 53.796981, -1.232925
    Date Filmed: 27-09-2022

    Nearest Station: Sherburn-in-Elmet

    Trains:
    Class 155 (Northern)

    This was previously a full road crossing, with four longer barriers and without the metal gates blocking three quarters of the road. The original crossing was installed somepoint in the 1970s / 1980s to replace manual gates, and remained a road crossing up until the 1990s. With the construction of a bypass bridge over the railway less than 100 metres away, the crossing became pedestrianised and was then no longer used by road traffic. The original crossing lights, barriers and alarms remained in situ for a further approximately 15 years or so, before two of the barriers being removed entirely and the other two barriers shortened to match the width of the path over the tracks. The original four white-border warning lights and two alarms were not touched and remarkably remained standing on my visit in September 2022, and at least 36 years old on the date of filming. It is believed these are the last original white-border warning lights to exist on a main line railway level crossing, making this particular crossing one of the most unique in the whole of the country (in my opinion).
    Thanks For Watching!

    This crossing is one of my favourites; it's just so unique! Remarkable how long these white-bordered lights have remained.

    As a daily user of that station, I can tell you of the frustration that the southbound travellers (i.e. coming from York) experience as we wait to cross each evening!.
    The former NER footbridge at Garforth would have worked nicely here (a former NER station).
    I shouldn't complain; it's great living in a village with two railway stations - the other being South Milford, but technically in Sherburn.

    Great video! I honestly always love this one. Would love to visit it if I ever get over to the UK, especially if it's still unchanged at that point.
    I also love how the old road striping is still present too.

      Yeah, it’s one pretty unique crossing. As original as you can get as far as the warning lights and alarms are concerned.

      @@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Yeah same here, I filmed this too but my editing wasn't the best when I edited it over a year ago now. Oh well! It is unique and I hope it stays for as long as it can.

    Interesting that it seems to be considered a full barrier CCTV crossing rather than being converted to automatic operation (as it is "only" a pedestrian crossing now)

  • @HarryPearce-e4i

    Why did the road get abandoned but kept it open to pedestrians

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  7 місяців тому +1

      A bypass bridge was built next to the station so the road crossing was reduced to pedestrian access only.

  • @dragonv480

    Great "converted" crossing with all original infrastructure. Just a shame they didn't relocate the barrier lights from the tip and half way across to the "new" tip and halfway across when they cut the barrier down from full length to pavement length

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  Рік тому

      It seems odd seeing the barriers cut in half like that. I agree, one set of original barriers could've been kept to make the crossing a bit wider

  • @nightw4tchman
    @nightw4tchman 4 місяці тому +1

    Looks like the road was shut and they couldn't change the type of crossing.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 місяці тому +1

      The crossing was downgraded to just a footpath years ago but the lights and barriers have been kept how they are and not changed.

      There are more of the white barrier wig wags in Ireland. But you won’t find them specifically Dublin (you will if your lucky.), it’s more common on other parts of the country. And I can see that you found one in one of your videos.
