      I definitely don't think he made anyone do anything that was outside of themselves. But you can't help everyone. How many homeless people do you see in your life? This experiment showed how deep our generosity runs. Most of us who are too generous learn to suppress the pocket-emptying urge because we can't afford it.
      Obviously plenty of people walked by without even glancing at him so no amount of subliminal suggestion changes a person's heart.

      @THE ONE look at the motives, please. Controlling a nation to keep companies in power, that's plausible. Controlling a nation to cover up serious crimes, also plausible. Controlling a nation to soften the moral impact of invasions in other countries, absolutely understandable. If you wanna go more subtle and less overt, how about just slowly conditioning people to be susceptible to control in general? That's one of the main functions of social media, and it's way more successful about it than any conspiracy theory could possibly be. So that reason's already taken - it would be entirely needless to duplicate. So - controlling a nation to suppose the world is a different shape to the shape it is? I always ask this question. What possible fucking reason would they do that for? Who gains from that? It's nonsense. It doesn't advantage anyone. There's no reason to conspire in order to make that happen. And that's how you sort the plausible conspiracy from the complete nonsense. Look at the motives. Look at the advantages. See who stands to gain, what they stand to gain, and whether they'd realistically notice or care about gaining it. It's a pretty simple filter. Nobody sets up deep conspiracies to control masses of people just for the kick of it, there's always a reason.
      Governments control their populaces as much as they can get away with, all the bloody time. But it tends not to be the kind of things that you make movie plots out of. It tends to be the kind of things that actually get them something.

    • @Torthrodhel
      @Torthrodhel 5 років тому +4

      @THE ONE I watch plenty of fiction, yes. I understand the concept of hiding things in plain sight. If you're talking about movies, the classic example would be the big fat cat corporate villain - deliberately consistently portrayed as cartoonishly over-the-top in fiction in order to keep people thinking of it as fiction with no basis in fact. And it's not any one particular studio telling any one particular movie "write it like this" - it's just the balance of averages on what stories do or don't get backed. That's how that happens.
      But there's a reason for that. There's a lot of money and power wrapped up in perpetuating capitalism. People have a lot to lose if that system ever changed to another (and the people that would gain from that shift of system aren't the ones with the power to choose which movies get made right now). That's the general nature of corruption. The incumbents always alter the rules in order to maintain their incumbency.
      What possible thing do they gain from people thinking the world is the wrong shape, though? The answer is nothing - nobody gains anything from that. There is no reason for it.
      So I will ask you again, not how they could do that, not are they capable of doing that, not have people ever done that for other reasons, and not even how they would hide it if they were doing it - the question is WHY would they do that. And it remains unanswered.

    ahh, finally. the episode that terrified me as a kid, i watched it around friends and family the night it broadcasted live, and had never heard the name Derren Brown.I couldn't sleep that night, That creepy and eerie tone that played during the film that left a few friends glued down, haunted me. After that,as an early teenager,i became somewhat obsessed with his work, and slowly learned there was nothing to be afraid of, you are in control.. mostly. He honestly was one of my heroes, and still is. fondly look back on as an adult. the tone that plays during the film still feels so familiar to this day. I was always jealous it never worked on me.

    The real "Control A Nation" trick here was not sticking people to seats, it was making an entire audience at home stand up to prove they weren't stuck to their seats. That's control by misdirection. Genius. "This may not work on the internet" was also misdirection, to make the home viewer feel they were in for something purely directed to them, which they were; misdirection. The subliminal images were not in fact subliminal as they were visually perceptible meaning they were each present on screen for too many frames per second to be "subliminal", another misdirection, to sow the seed. When he brought up the guy earlier to choose a chair, a pen and number three blocks, he brought him up during a phase where the ambient lighting in the room was green, the table top was green and clearly the guy colour matched the chair.
    The pens were ordered in such a way as to cause him to choose a different colour, and given how it was presented to him, and his left-handedness, blue was a given result. The numbering of the blocks - watch it again.. Derren siad there are 3 blocks (touching the camer- side left bloc as he said "three") and you have to number them in any order you like from one , two , three ( on "one" he touched the middle block) and guess what , the guy followed his instructions to the letter. Replay and rewatch the subtle programming.

    • @daniel-andersson
      @daniel-andersson 3 роки тому +8

      I absolutely agree with your comment, but the "subliminal" images were on the screen for just one frame. Of course, that doesn't invalidate your point at all. There was an audible beep sound accompanying them at times to draw your awareness to it.

      The cleverest part of Derren's shows is how he gives you a false solution to his tricks, to make you feel smart for "getting it" while he seems like a master manipulator. I'm afraid the chair/pen trick is really a lot less impressive than it looks. An assistant is watching the cameras from backstage, and picks the blue pen, then writes the numbers onto a photograph of blank cubes, and puts the photo in an envelope together with a photo of a blue pen and a green chair. When Derren goes backstage to get the mic stands, they switch envelopes.

    This is acceptance hypnosis, basically he didn't do anything subliminally but telling you-you're going to get stuck and to just accept it. In the performance with Joe, he had someone back stage with a selection of previously taken photos. As Joe selected the CHAIR, PEN, and the ORDER IN WHICH THE BLOCKS WOULD BE ARRANGED, the back stage helper would place the appropriate photo into the envelope as Joe was making his selections. When they went to retrieve the black stands, it didn't show Darren getting his stands that were conveniently placed just out of sight, THAT'S when he switched from the envelope that he was previously holding to the one that contained the correct selection of photos.

    More than 5 years later now. Derren started the video with te suggestion and did a short induction before the film started. I have been a "trained" subject for years now and I recognize the techniques used. Short inductions never worked on me, until now. Thank you Derren.

      the whole show is a setup. he practically opens with a complete description of what he wants viewers to think. i don't even particularly like this one because the metamessaging is so thick it becomes distracting. in fact, i enjoy the experiments more than the events as a whole for this reason. the events are just too loaded. it's hard to pay attention to _everything_ he wants the television audience to be doing.

      I'm going to watch his show in April so have been to watching lots of his older stuff. Thanks, I'll check that out. I get that he's saying what is going to happen so maybe the more influenced people will be 'tricked'. In this, it is pretty blatant which I guess is why not many people went for it. I particularly liked his show where he predicted which word on which page on which newspaper a member of the audience picked.

  • @TheDobstopper

    I believe Derren may have one of the most in depth... practical understandings of the different ways the human brain can work. I hope that when he decides he's done performing he puts out a book describing what he understands and the reasons he thinks why these things happen (or prepares a book to release upon his death, if he feels he will never want to stop performing). I'm talking his understanding of hypnosis, religion, con artistry, and how these things work with some conjuring tricks (magic tricks) he's done. He's combined so many different things in such strange ways that while other humans may have an understanding of an individual principle, I feel he may be one of the only ones that understands the full or at least a larger potential of said principles.

    I feel like it wasn't about the film, but rather what he was saying. Because Derren has achieved this in some other shows of his without a video. And by saying it won't work if you're watching on the Internet, that's what actually makes it not work. Also, some people in the studio weren't able move their hands/arms either. But it was assumed people at home would, because otherwise they couldn't make the call. So they didn't apply the suggestion to their hands, whereas some people in the studio did, as they didn't have plans to use them. Also, I feel like the very specific instructions on how to sit in the chair were not really there because the film is designed for that position or something, my guess is it's because some people are more susceptible to the suggestion (which is not designed for any precise position) and when it doesn't work on someone, they can think "oh, I probably did something wrong". And it won't affect you if you don't sit in that position on purpose simply because you don't expect it to affect you then. An other thing is, what if there's a sudden power outage that turns of the TV before he unsticks you? :D Well, my guess is that that situation would overpower the suggestion, because when you know eventually he's going to unstick you, you give in more and subconsciously there's not really any need to get up. When there is need, though, as otherwise it would seem you'd be stuck forever, you let go of the suggestion.
    That's just my guess, anyway. I still don't know how he does the speaking suggestion anyway, of course. :)

      Also claimed it to be down to low resolution from a pc screen and that's why it won't work online, but the resolution on a pc screen is actually higher due to the manufacturer acknowledging that the viewing distance is shorter and therefore needs to be higher. In fact you will find your iphone or smart phone has an even higher resolution than your pc screen as the viewing distance is designed for an even shorter distance.
