  • Chasing a music career in 2022 has it's challenges. Something people never talk about is the massive success gap between those who have dominated the industry in the past compared to those coming up in the business today. What do our chances look like realistically when it comes to becoming successful? Over the years I have worked with countless artists ranging from big names all the way down to beginners and I wanted to break down a pattern I find that tells me whether or not they will ever reach their goals and dreams. Sorry in advance if this one triggers anyone.

what you described at level 30 is definitely me right now. things take time, and although you can follow a formula, not everyone’s situation is gonna be the same. perseverance and smart thinking and doing the right things is gonna be king in the long run. needed this message today adam!!

Number wise I'm not sure. Been at it since 2014, gotten better at songwriting, production etc., got a little bit of traction but not "quit my day job (s)" level. And battling a strong case of burnout.
      A 45 perhaps?

I’d rank myself low but slowly but surely growing by a percent or a half percent each day.
I have been gaining more subscribers than I ever thought I would after consistently uploading for 6 months (gained 400 this past month somehow!)
I think my YT videos are sending people to my Spotify because it is getting more traction than before, and I have been getting more followers slowly but surely. So steady growth after a lot of hard work!
I just hope the forward trajectory keeps going. I get stressed whenever I see a dip in stats but I know the algorithm tends to go in phases like that.

thank you so much for all your help! i just discovered your channel today and i've already learned so much. i think in general comparing ourselves is our worst enemy. with the right dedication and perseverance you can get anywhere! i heard someone say once the worst enemy for a musician is comparison. "i don't have this, i don't have that, but they have that". i started dedicating my time to music 6 months ago and especially in the summer with no school (i'm a student) i've learned and done so much within a short amount of time. i know if i keep this up i'll get to where i want eventually. i wish everyone in their music careers nothing but the best. :)

Thanks for this Adam. I've been suffering alot of stress as of late as to the slow (to say the least) commercial progress of my band and feeling hopeless. The past few weeks however, I've changed my perspective to look at the journey for what it is and that I can only do what I can and take the opportunities that are presented to me, and that success is not all or nothing. It's relative as you said.

The sad reality is that everyone is chasing their own dreams of fame and fortune, as if it's going to solve all our problems and bring us happiness, but we are chasing an illusion. The rich and poor meet together: The LORD is the maker of them all. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. These celebrities we idolize will be the lowest of the low in the kingdom of Heaven, assuming they even make it there. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

This video helped me a lot. I was worried that I was gonna watch this and wanna sell my guitars and basically my entire studio by the end of it but I realized I'm in a great place! I only have about 40 streams on a single I released two weeks ago which is good in my book...it's my second single...thats it. I have had "friends" bash me because I can't match their numbers but by the end of this video I feel like I have always been successful in music because of where I started. I always said if I make one dollar in profit my music career will be a success, and back in February I did my first live show and the venue paid me 70 bucks, so from now until they put dirt on my head I will have had a successful music career. The other thing is I'm not a material person...im just a guy from Buffalo NY...I dont want the LA life with Grammys and a big ass house...I want a tiny A-frame cabin and some horses with a studio and a camper so.i can go out on tour and play festivals and stuff. So basically after watching this I feel so much better about where I'm at and I can't thank you enough Adam!

    • @adamivy

I’ve made $22 off my internet streams! Which to me is a big deal because I started from 0 and I created something that’s bringing in money without me having to do anything else. I’m sure he’s mentioned this before but if you literally wanna be the “next big thing” than a lot of it has to do with luck as well. Like straight up winning the lottery luck. A hellllll of a lotta hard work as well as those winning #’s. That’s why folks shouldn’t get so hard on themselves when it doesn’t seem to work out. There’s nothing wrong with ghost writing or making 50k a year writing/playing music. Is it not better than digging gravel? I personally just wanna be a great songwriter, to tour, and have a fanbase that rlly appreciates my music. Doesn’t have to be large, though yes, that would be nice. Just as long as I’m happy/comfortable/content in life. Hope everyone out there kills it!

    • @adamivy
      @adamivy  Рік тому

That's very true. To be the next superstar it does take a lot of hard work and a matter of luck. However, to make a decent living and not have to work a day job while living off your music is very possible. Plenty of people are doing this right now with my help and without it.

Oftentimes I’m asked “Do you think you’d STILL get signed to a major label (Epic/Columbia) if you’d been born in ‘73 or ‘93 or 2003?”
My answer has always been “YES.”
Is that pompous or conceited? Perhaps it could be interpreted that way. But here’s the truth:
Proper Rock’n’Roll stars were made to be managed. We are prizefighters.
We keep grinding - round after round - full of perseverance. We need someone (plus their highly-skilled team) to assure us that we’re GOING to win. As you hold our bloodied faces in your hands and place iced quarters on what will inevitably become scar tissue, an authentic artist might ask “why am I here? Why go for another round?”
Because YOU believe in our talent, our work ethic, and the fact that we should be spending our sleepless nights sharpening our skill set and writing / recording the next song that changes the temperature in countless rooms across the globe.
Your 15 - 20% of that consistent, prophetic, “properly-marketed” catalog will make YOU (the admin / managerial type) never-ending mailbox money. So…
Start gambling on the underdogs. If you have to sell all of the furniture in your house to re-tape our hands & get us back in the ring…DO IT. We are Cinderella men/women. Do it knowing you’re holding aces over kings versus the other guys’ two pair. If you want TikToks and micro-content, simply recruit someone with an iPhone to capture the magic. Orchestrate it. You do believe in magic, right? Why else would you be involved in one of the most difficult industries on the planet?
20 percent of the Real Deal is way more than 100 percent of amateur hour.
    Open mic night is over.
    -MM

If you're a solo artist that consistently packs 200 capacity venues, you can make a living. If you're a 4 or 5-piece band that consistently packs 500 capacity venues, you can make a living. At the consistent 500-1000 mark, you get booked on the summer music festival circuit. Live performance earns most musicians 50% of revenue. Use DSPs as a marketing vehicle, not as a revenue source.

i really needed to hear this. so often, people (including myself) expect things to just work out for their good immediately, and what i’ve noticed is that the media pushes the false narrative of “overnight success”. take BTS for example. they’re a music group who has experienced a large amount of success in a short amount of time… or do you think. the media pushed the idea that BTS blew up over night. but the truth is that BTS has been making music for about 9 years now. but most people look past the hard work and focus on the success. you can’t get long term success without hard work.

Todays rap industry, wether artist is with a label or not, everyone's BOTTED UP. 50k likes and 300 comments? Y'all see the ratios everywhere and it's not right.
People add this "fake motion" in hopes it kickstarts the real motion cus people seem to only see the numbers. It's weird

Great video, as usual. FTR, I happen to be that guy who considers $3,000-$5,000 per month and being able to pay ALL my bills without having to work a day job *the pinnacle of success,* LOL. After I get *there,* maybe I revise my goals. I’m really just getting started, so comparing myself to, say, Metallica just feels stupid.

There's nothing wrong with that at all man. Everyone has different levels of success, no one should judge you for what yours is or isn't. Your happiness is your happiness. 💪

@@adamivy I don’t know how, but it occurred to me that comparison has probably ended more music careers than anything else…besides listening to people who just don’t know what they’re talking about. I’m 59 years old and planning to become a F/T working musician (guitar player) as a “retiree.” No illusions about “stardom,” probably better off being too old for serious heavy-metal debauchery. In any case, listening to naysayers, even the ones in my own head, is still the Kiss Of ☠️
Thanks again for all that you do. It’s appreciated 👍🏾👍🏾

Let’s compare age: The older musicians make better music, period. Call it subjective. It is what it is.

Gains are gains! I'm glad you are accountable enough to admit you couldn't stay consistent, that's a huge power to be that honest with yourself. That also means you know what you need to do to get better results. Keep grinding!

@@adamivy Yes it's possible to gain that much in 6 months. But the way you framed it was like "You can open up a daw for the first time with no musical experience and have 2k followers in 6 months". That's like telling an obese person they can look like a fitness model in 6 months, we all know it doesn't work like that
