Blueberries are great for your health. We have about 50 bushes that we planted 2 years ago. We also have picked nearly 300 gallons a year from our inlaws orchard. Love to see you planting and mulching them.
Great video, Even though it’s a couple of years old it’s still useful today. Hubby and myself are going to plant two in pots next spring time and I found your video very informative. Thank you. Thought you were ever so brave working in Feb you sounded blinking freezing!
Love the video! You just gave me a great idea! I just picked up a chipper/shredder from Craig's list to produce leaf mold. I have huge amounts of wood piles on the farm from pruning pines, fruit trees and deciduous trees. I can make my bedding material, mulch and not to mention compost Thanks! Steve
Great information! Shredded Christmas trees is a good idea. Also, good to know that I can plant the pot, if I miss getting the plant in the ground. I've killed many a plant by missing planting time.
Nice one Tony! I have a Pink Lemonade varietal but its never done much in its current container. Mind you, the labrador savaged it when she was a puppy just as the plant was getting going in its pot! I'm going to seriously drop the pH of the large container its in and stick to rainwater from the butt but!
Such a WONDERFUL video and such FANTASTIC info Tony :-) I am learning tons from you :-) thats a brilliant idea about recycling your old Christmas trees as mulch and full of nutrients too :-) I can so relate to the rain OMG! it hasn't stopped here in Ireland either, its been so horrible and my garden is resembling those mud baths the Hippos bathe in haha! thanks so much for sharing and sending you loads of love and happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle for a FANTASTIC Wednesday today XXXXX
Hi Tony I followed your advice a couple of years ago and have done well with the blueberries what about the original ericaceous compost won't it have lost its energy by now?
I’ve had a blueberry bush for 2 years almost 3 it looks healthy but no blueberries. I bought another one of a different species last spring it’s growing nicely so I’m going to plant them this spring. Fingers crossed 🤞
Hi Tony, I am wondering if you can help me? I am new to growing fruit and veg - last year being my first and unsuccessful year. I do not have a garden only a small yard and so everything will be container grown. I have just purchased some blueberry plants and some ericaceous soil. The thing is I don't have any Christmas tree clippings for a mulch. I have seen some pine bark, but at £10 a bag for the small amount I will need, this seems a little expensive. Do you have an alternative to recommend? Also I have read you should only water with rain water - is this true? I will not be able to sustain this for all watering, should I add something to my tap water? And finally do I need to add a fertiliser to my soil at the time of planting? Sorry for the long post - newbies hey! Thanks in advance. Angela
our allotment has just had a delivery of fresh shredded rhododendron and holly bush can this be used on blueberries. by the way brilliant videos i'm always watching them so easy to follow
@@simplifygardening i'm planting 4 for now. I have got a gazebo frame someone gave me and i'm planing on using it for a fruit cage 3m x 3m which is just right for my plot. As you said in the film us gardeners love to recycle.
Hi mate, useful upload. I plan on creating a small fruit area at the end of season. I was thinking of ordering plants from Pomona. Looking at your last seasons crop, how old is the plant with the huge crop? If I plant in Autumn, would you let it crop the first year? I see from the March newsletter you and Brian are at the show on Friday.....have a good day 👍🏻
Sorry bud thought i was sub to your channel but i was not. So new sub i really liked the video. Great advice about the soil amendments! I look forward to watching more of your videos! I like the way you tiered you section of your plot there. I have a very aggres slop on my yard and have been trying to figure out how i can tier it without a lot of work. I think something like that should work well. :) Thanks for sharing!!!
Hello mate thank you very much for the video, I was wondering if you can help, my sons love blueberries so I decided to plant some in my garden we don't have much sun in the garden due to giant trees own by the council and I heard that blueberries need full sun is there any kind that can tolerate that? Also I was wondering if you could suggest good flavours with fiery leaf colours during autumn please thank you ever so much.
Hi Tony, thanks for the videos. I've bought 2 bushes about 40cm height. Should I remove flower buds in this first year of planting to promote growth or will they be fine left on?
Hi Tony. Great educating vid as usual. I was wondering I was just about to plant a BlackBerry and rasberry bushes. Would the same information apply for them. Are they acidic liking plants also I've heard mixed opinions...?
Hi, welcome to the channel. Thanks for subscribing, we have quite a large back catalogue of videos so feel free to look through the playlists. We have much more on the way. Don't be afraid to join in the comments and conversation :) Tony
Hi Tony, Great and timely video just working on my fruit bed and going to buy some blueberry plants, what variety are you planting and what spacings are between the plants. We have just had the parish council fell some pines trees they have dumped the shreaded pine on our allotments.
Hi, Les. You need a good 2.5ft between plants, more if possible as they can get quite big. You require more than one variety for cross-pollination. I have the following varieties. Blue Crop, Sparton, Patriot, Legacy, Elliot, Bluegold and Bluetta. What varieties are you thinking of? and how many plants Les?
Thanks Tony, After seeing your video I am rethinking on my beds design and having a separate bed just for the blueberries, and will need to build another cage to protect them. I'm looking around at who's selling them at the moment most seem to be around the £15 mark for a 2 year old plant. Just missed some nice plants in Lidl they sold out the same day. I will probable be able to fit in 5 or 6 plants.
Thats perfect. Yes well worth just having one bed, and remember to get some ericaceous compost in the planting hole to get them going, If you have a real Xmas tree mulch it after Xmas and use this as a mulch as it helps to keep down weeds, hold moisture and also helps acidify the soil
Hi Tony, I'm thinking ahead on protecting the fruits from the birds, I've been through all your video's and can't find how you protect them. I was thinking of making a fruit cage over the soft fruit beds. How do you protect your fruits.
Thanks for sharing, just in time please i need another variety blueberry, I planted vaccininum corymbsum . Which one can I get ,do you sell i would like to get one.
Michael its because the plant cannot support them. I would suggest its either a feeding or water issue, the plants not getting enough. this can all relate back to the ph of the soil as if too alkaline it will prevent the plant absorbing the required nutrients. first thing is to test the soil mate
I bought a blueberry plant it was looking healthy about 60cm high with load of green leaves stems, a little bush. I went away a day after buying it and accidental Left it in a bucket. When it rained it was left in the water for a week or more. Now all. The leaves are gone brown with very little or no green left. I pulled of some of the brown ones and trimmed a little off. It doesn't look any happier. What can I do?? I'm considering cutting it down almost to ground and hoping it will grow next season ??? Help
It was prob starved of oxygen and the tree shut itself down. I would just pot it up in erriclsious compost and leave it as is, dont cut it. i would remove all leaves so the plant can concentrate on fixing its roots and see if it pulls through

Hi Tony I followed your advice a couple of years ago and have done well with the blueberries what about the original ericaceous compost won't it have lost its energy by now?
Yes it will have so you can lower the soil ph if when tested its no longer acidic by adding sulphur to the soil this will make it acidic again
Used coffee grounds and peat moss also work.
@@simplifygardening thanks Tony will do

Does anyone know what type of blueberries are recommended?
You require at least two different varieties for pollination

Hi Tony, can these blueberries grow in humid areas? Especially in Laikipia,Kenya.
Yes Meja they will grow fine there
Tony, without knowing my soil would you have wild guess why my plant drops alot of berries before and when the berries are ripe?
Michael its because the plant cannot support them. I would suggest its either a feeding or water issue, the plants not getting enough. this can all relate back to the ph of the soil as if too alkaline it will prevent the plant absorbing the required nutrients. first thing is to test the soil mate

Hello,
Can I use conifer branches
Yes but conifer wont last long so you will need to keep applying for the acidity
over time the ph level will change,,, use sulphate of iron.
Thank you for sharing very helpful tips 👍😮
Glad it was of interest Angela, Sorry for the late reply I have had some personal issues
Looking online I don’t see that type of compost in America.
Its just an acidic compost. if you cannot get it then add some sulfur to normal compost so it drops below 6ph
Just add sulphur to soil then ammonium sulphate to soil no need for ericaceous compost
Great tips, Thanks
How do you know how much to add can you give me any more details. Iv just bought a blueberry plant today
@@sarahlou5777 Add around 3 ounces per plant. plant into ericaceous compost

I use my spring.
Don’t overdo it - you sound very breathless & full of cold
I was at the time. But this was a long time ago now. thanks
