Nice, great to see they are rebounding. Here in Sonoma County, CA USA we had a lot of fires the last fall and quite a few folks had hives abscond. Looking like we are not going to get all the rain we need this spring setting us up for another dry year, longer dirth and more fire potential this fall. But if they can rebound there is hope.
Hey Adrian, I'm Learning a lot. I have been given top bar hives; my question is, when do you use shims? In one of your videos, you said to do a video on it, but I can't find it.
I would like to start my beekeeping journey here in South Africa with a Kenyan hive. How do you get a sraight comb in a new hive? Would you consider doing videos on how to start from scratch? I am sold on Kenyan hives because there is so little disturbance of bees
Hi Ralf, I would only add empty bars to the brood area when i'm wanting to cycle out old brood combs once the hive is about 4 years old and I would open up the centre of the brood nest early spring and add one bar, wait a couple of weeks and then do the same. Over time (one or two seasons) i would have cycled out some or all of the old brood comb. Its really important to only do 1 bar at a time.

We've had a very wet spring and summer after those fires.
