It takes me back in the days, makes me a little melancholic but to be honest, I kinda like that feeling :) Hope you’re enjoying this, I sure enjoyed recording this one. xxx

This song is about a girl Blunt dated, but he wrote it years after the relationship ended. When he appeared on the UK show Songbook, Blunt explained: "I guess it's a realization that you'll never be with someone, but the frustration that they are still alive and out there in the world. It can be an incredibly painful idea - I sat with the song for quite a long time. But for me, it's probably my most personal song. Whereas 'You're Beautiful' is about a moment, one second in time of passing that person, the song 'Goodbye My Lover' is about a lifetime's worth of emotion, the fact that that relationship is over, and that life continues. And yeah, it's the most personal song on Back To Bedlam.

As a young bachelor, I always loved this song. Now as a married man whose wife has decided to go her own way, it’s a complete different experience to hear it. As a bachelor this song was like a window into another’s pain, but now…it’s as if it’s my own soul singing. The pain is unimaginable.

I always shed a tear or two when i listen to this song. It makes me very emotional. I never been in a real relationship, and yet it gives me a weird feeling of hope and sadness at the same time. Cant explain it but its true. You have a beautiful voice that can move mountains :)

Ok so.. First of all... WHAAAT!!!?? You might as well have written this song. The way you sang it was above and beyond James Blunt's own performances and recordings of this song. I mean, like, WAAATTT??? This is to James Blunt's rendition as Whitney's performances and recording of "I Will Always Love You" to that of songwriter Dolly Parton's. This song has always been a deep part of my being. I first heard it on SNL (of all places) in the hospital waiting room the night my brother was pronounced brain dead and took off the machines the next day. So that's how much this song means to me. And you somehow made me love it more than I ever have. You are a living legend and walking MASTERPIECE, Iris. Just wow. I'm speechless and breathless.

Congratulations on doing this. It's an almost impossible song to cover and particularly so for a female singer because of a desire by many female vocalists to go for vaulting vocals which you impressively resisted. Blunt wrote a beautiful song and perfectly provided all of the emotion the song needed and your performance doesn't try to upstage it but is still beautiful. Well done.
