Luna was an exceptionally friendly orca, and often in desperate need of social contact; sadly, so much so that it eventually cost him his life by getting too close to a boat’s propeller. The dog was never in any danger.
I can't stop blaming the Native Americans. When the DFO finally got around to trying to save Luna, they ruined everything. They were going to use a boat (Luna was well known to chase boats) to lure him into a pen where he could be cared for. Then, when they could reach them, they would transfer him to were his pod was and reunite him with his family. The plan went smoothly until the Native Americans paddled out in two canoes and lured him away from the DFO boat with their splashing. It wasn't an accident, either! They deliberately lured him away from his would-be rescuers because they believed he was the reincarnation of their dead chief and they didn't want to see him leave. They ruined everything!
Megalodon I don't know all the facts, but I had thought the Gov was going to try and put him in a Sea World type location, instead of "reuniting" him with his family? I'm wrong about this?
+Chris Kavanagh Yes, you're right. The Native Americans were the ones with guts and love who saved him from a miserable life in an aquarium prison all set up to transport him. Some of us believe that he was shot, not hit by a boat, as it was warned someone was going to kill him that year. Its all in the documentary The Whale on Netflix. If you're angry and sad about him, just think how others who came to love him would have felt if they knew how he really died... although I believe they suspect it but can't prove it. When his friend had to go away for 3 days that's when it happened.
+Chris Kavanaugh Yes, you are. The original plan was to lure the whale out of the sound just as his pod was passing by, thereby reuniting him with his family, but the pod didn't take its usual route past the sound that year, so that proved impossible. So, Plan B was to transfer the Orca to the waters near where the pod WAS traveling that year. Since there was no way to lead the whale to the Pod's current location, they would temporarily catch him and then move him to a location where it would be possible to reunite them. Unfortunately, the local tribe's dead cheif had claimed he would be reincarnated as an Orca, and when a lone Orca sam into the waters near their land, the superstitious natives were convinced he had come back to watch over him. Thus, they refused to see the whale moved. I spent time studying this case. It's all documented based on eyewitness accounts and the testimony of those who knew the tribesmen.
I feel so bad about what happened to Luna. These animals re so intelligent. He was lost from his pod and would come straight to the docs to try and make friends. Poor lonely boy. Rest in peace Luna.

That orca was so beautiful and to friendly towards everyone there will never be another orca like Luna just wish he got to be with his family and swim freely through the ocean
True fact: all Orca attacks are in marine parks by a solitary animal. There had never been on record an attack on humans by orcas in the wild. They are genuinely friendly and sociable, but when put through the trauma and isolation of being in a pen.
TrackMaster844 Your true fact is based on unfair numbers. I'm assuming you got it from black-fish. The death ratio has nothing to do with "trauma." Lets consider this, people die in airplanes, theme parks, even driving to work. When swimming with predatory animals attacks can happen. Therefor I think the number of deaths at parks are very low! Oh, for every one person that swims with an orca in the wild, a thousand or more interactions take place at sea-world alone. I bet if those numbers were reversed or even close to being equal the number of deaths would be far greater in the wild. In reality the numbers are nowhere near close so your point it totally irrelevant. You could say for the 500 or so people who swam with orcas in the wild (if that) there were 20 times as many incidents at sea-world that turned out fine. It's all how you want to manipulate the numbers! But I guess being an ignorant whale advocate is cool these days.
John Davis Then lock yourself up in a small cage for your whole life in some zoo, do stupid tricks for food and we'll see how happy you gonna be. These park are created just for the sake of human entertainment, animals didn't wish to go there. Wanna see some bears? Then go into the wild and enjoy. If we kidnap and capture humans, it's illegal. If we do the same to animals, it's just fine.
I just watched Blackfish...I was very surprised to find out that some of the "Trainers" were not educated Marine biologists. Why on earth would Seaworld put lay person's in a pool with one of the worlds smartest carnivores???
There was only one incident involving a human. An orca latched onto a surfer's leg. The orca, they think, believed the surfer was a seal and when he realized that he wasn't (the man turned around to face him), the orca let go of his leg. They say with the identification the man made plus the surgical precision of the teeth, it was an orca. But yes, I whole heartedly agree with you. The breaking of the blood bonds between family members is a huge issue. Not to mention being cooped into a tiny little bathtub for a creature that swims over 100 miles a day. For example Tilikum is languishing with no interaction - something orcas live for. It's sad that when I was a little girl and got to see "Baby Shamu" (Kalina) I asked 'aren't they sad?' The trainer said 'it's all she knows. Her mother was taken from the sea, but she seems fine.' That broke my heart so badly and I've never given a single dime to them. 'Blackfish' and the current footage of Tilikum depressed and ignored was just the final nail for me. I can't, in good conscious, give money to an organization that is so woefully ignorant. I can't. If no one believes me, look up Seaworld's Beluga Whale death rate (not to mention the baby orca death rate). It's horrifically disgusting.
Yulia I'm not saying whales are happy in captivity, I'm not saying it's right to breed captive whales either. Your reply to my comment was totally off base from my points. I'm just saying why these reasons are flawed.
Luna was one of a kind. I know nothing of the controversy that surrounded him, I just know of the Love he spread and the friendships he made. . .If you haven't seen a documentary about him (there were several), do yourself a favor and watch one. If it doesn't touch you, well, check your pulse because you may me dead. I would have paid anything to see Luna in person.
How amazing is it that a canine can understand the lonliness of a cetacean and try to communicate with him and play with him and the beings with superior intelligence (a.k.a humans) can't? May Luna's soul be in peace and where ever he be, may he have lots of attention and love...God Bless that little baby...

Orcas become dangerous and crazy when they’re trapped inside a tiny enclosure for the rest of their lives. They are extremely intelligent and social animals who need stimulation!
brother uncle but I mean to be honest the trainers love the whales they need to target the bosses the people who put them in the bathtubs and who force the trainers to do cruel things like starving them because the bosses told the trainers they are not to speak up about it
Please study orcas, if that orca wanted to eat that dog he or she would have. Orcas can jump more than 3 meters in the air and could have reached that dog very easily. And since it didn't even attempt to open its mouth it obviously weren't hungry. Orcas are extremely intelligent and intellectual animals that will socialize with both human and dog and so on. It simply wanted to play.
yes. EASILY. I’ve seen them on youtube when preying for seals. They actually know how to beach themselves to get to them! It’s absolutely amazing! And i’m not one to be easily impressed. These whales are truly out of this world
My Springer Spaniel called Bobby loves the sound of Orcas, he has heard them in distress when the inbaciles where catching them years ago near Canada. It's the same as when he heard the film THE COVE about the Dolphins being culled he gets so upset. How lucky you were to see and capture this wonderful vlog of mans best friend and highly intelligent Orcas (ocean people) Thankyou for the share 🐋🐬🐳
The dog can probably hears Luna (though humans can't) and Luna seems to hear and enjoy doggies bark. Doggie seems to be saying come closer because he stops barking when Luna comes close, but calls him when he doesn't come close enough or is still submerged. Amazing! Thanks for the post.
Id got in the water with him. Wouldn't hurt a soul he'd probably swim around you. There not murders like ppl portray them to be. They're very smart and honestly highly sosphisticated. Really gentle giants unless your a seal lol.
I love Luna, he was such a beautiful creature, I saw him on a documentary and i cried so much. I hated how people wanted to catch him, but the locals starred him away from their boats in their canoes, Why do people have to interfere all the time? R.I.P Luna such a loved beautiful Orca :(
It wasn't the accumulation that prevented his rescue in the end. It was the interference of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people who preventing his capture. Back in June 2004 they tried to move him into a pin by using boats to lure him in. Because he was attracted to boats and had been trained to follow the DFO boat, the plan had a possibility of success. Once he was in the pin, he would be transferred to a location where he could be reunited with his family. But the stubborn natives refused to let that happen. As he was following the boat towards the pin, they came out in two canoes and distracted him. They managed to successfully lead him away! Those idiots thought he was the reincarnation of their late chief, and refused to have him moved. Some of the more sensible natives had agreed to have the animal moved for it's own protection, but most of them wouldn't listen. Thanks to their meddling, DFO eventually had to stand down and abandon the attempt. Thanks to their incompetance, their "reincarnated chief" ended up being brutally killed after he got sUcked into the propeller blades of a tugboat. That poor six year old whale had grown so accustomed to playing with boats that it didn't see any danger in playing around a tugboat. The bloods on their hands. The attempt with the pen was the best opportunity for a rescue attempt, and they ruined it. Ugh! Usually I'm all for indigenous rights, but they had no right to interfere with DFO's plan to save that whale. I don't care what they thought that whale was, its rights came first! This was a Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans affair! Spinger, the other orphaned whale, was successfully reintegrated with her own pod and is alive to this day! Thanks in part to that meddlesome tribe, DFO never got the chance to try and save Luna! I know DFO has gotten a lot of criticism from the way they handled this situation, and yes they could have done more, but those stupid natives in their fucking canoes didn't help matters! So thanks a lot, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations! There is just as much blood on your hands as ther is on the DFO's. I hope it was worth it to see your precious "reincarnated chief" torn to shreds by the propeller of a boat! Thanks a lot, assholes!
I never knew that how selfish of them I'm usually on the side of the natives bc they get some raw deals. That situation however was just unnecessary. The animal's rights are more important than some stupid superstition.
Megalodon Anytime ignorant superstion (yes, religion) gets its way, there is always heartache...whether its Islam, Christian fundamentalists or first nations myths.

Such a beautiful Orca! He just wanted to play, and be loved just like the rest of us. It is sad to know that he died in such tragic manner. It makes me sad to know that he was a loner too, without a pod. This makes him much more vulnerable! He is with God now. Bless you Luna!
Luna was a beautiful little orca that needed human contact so badly. He got separated from his pod and orca are highly emotional and super intelligent and need the social interaction. He should have been protected better and the First Nations people were willing to try. It’s too bad politics got in the way. RIP Luna ❣️
"Luna/L98 was a male southern resident (fish eating) orca who died march 10 2006 when he was hit by a large tug boat in Nookta Sound." ...Humanity strikes again.
OMG! The orca is named Luna. He is a Southern Resident who is from the Seattle/San Juan de Fuca Islands, WA. USA He knew the dog was a dog and they were friends. Luna would never eat dogs or seals, because the Southern Residents are fish eaters. (Salmon) Some Killer Whales do eat seals, but not the Southern Residents.
I saw the documentary about Luna and how he socialized with humans, wanted them to play with him and loved their company - the fact that orcas are social mammals shows how much we can learn from them Such a shame that he suffered a violent death by those he trusted....typical human species..
i guess it's like those baby animals that are so young when they encounter humans that they think we are its parent. once the bond it formed, there's no going back. It's really sad that it didn't know we would be its downfall. RIP Luna!
Seems like the whale may have been attracted to what he THOUGHT was a sea lion, goes to check it out, sees an unknown hairy loud creature....... keeps getting a closer and closer look to try and figure out what it is, dog doesn't stand down, possible friendship taking place. They are magnificent creatures
No, actually Luna has a story behind him which explains why he was trying to interact with the dog. He was separated from his pod when he was very young and he was just looking for a family, a friend, or anything he could play with. Luna wouldn't eat the dog. Infact Luna was a southern resident killer whale meaning he only ate fish so even if he was hungry he wouldn't go looking for a sea lion he would e trying to find a chinook salmon.

Ann Finger said: "How very sad! Shows you animals have a lot of feelings." Pray tell what is "sad" about animals having feelings? I find it delightful.
Looked like he wanted a friend. At one point the Orca touched the top of the dog. I think both species were curious about each other. The Orca never made a violent move toward the dog but we all ASSUMED that if the dog jumped out feel in he would have been eaten. I didn't want to find out personally. It also seemed like the Orca liked the way the boat smelled. He kept smelling and rubbing himself against the bottom of the boat. Great video! ❤️
Adorable. Th Orca isn't aggressive I think he just wants to play and have company. Amazed at how smart these guys are. Went to the Killer Whale museum in Eden NSW a few weeks ago. Amazing!

I read that whales and dolphins share a common ancestor to wolves and all canines in general. This ancestor made its living between the ocean and land. It branched to those making a living in open oceans and to ones staying on dry land. After all this time, they still share some characteristics and affinity to humans and to each other.
RIP Luna I've watch some videos of you and so wish you were still with us your truly missed by all who knew the gentle spirit and friendly face that was displayed by A Whale. I hope we can prevent this from happening again!
Yes it's a tragic story. I've been trying to write a book about it from my perspective but it's been too traumatic for me. This year I got a rough draft down. Hope I can finish it.
@@curiousbo Ikr I have watched videos about Luna for a long time now but it's only now that I hear about his death. I hope that despite everything, he felt happy and not too lonely. Poor baby... Fascinating animals, Orcas. A lot of animal rights activist keep demanding that all whales in captivity be freed, but I don't think that's such a good idea. Unlike during the sixties and seventies, the vast majority of Orcas in captivity today were born in captivity. There are still some that were born in the wild, but even most of them have spent the majority of their lives in captivity. Because of this, the animals have become accustomed to being around people, and some have even formed a sort of bond with trainers. If we were dealing with a less intelligent animal, things would be far simpler, but Orcas are extremely intelligent, social animals. Many of their behaviors, including hunting strategies and other habits, are learned. The Orcas born in captivity have never been hunting before, and they haven't learned how to behave in wild pod. To make matters even more complicated, these captive Orcas now look to humans for companionship. They are less cautious around hunans than their wild relatives, and may even be attracted to human activity. Consider the case of Keiko. You may know him as the star of Free Willy. He was captured in 1979, when he was just four years old. He ended up in some cheap, sleazy Mexican amusement park (there are far worse places an Orca can be than Seaworld). When he was selected to play Willy, both Warner Brothers and the public fell in love with him. Warner Brothers ended up founding a charity group to raise enough money to find him a better home. They eventually raised enough money to find him a home at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which was a far better home than some cheap amusement park in Mexico. They aquarium quickly made plans to prepare him for a return to the wild. Unfortunately, he had developed horrible lesions on his skin while still in Mexico, and he needed medical treatment. He was still recovering when the sequels to Free Willy were filmed, so the majority of the scenes for those films made use of robots to portray him. Finally, in 1998, Keiko had made a full recovery, and he was shipped back to his native Iceland to be released to the wild. I mediately, preparations were made for his release, and trainers began to prepare him for release back into the wild. He was even take. On supervised swims in the open ocean. Finally, on August 2002, he was finally deemed ready, and he left Iceland with a pod of wild Orcas. Unfortunately, it turned out that Willy didn't like his freedom. Three weeks later, he was found alone in Skålvik Fjord, Norway, swimming with kids and entertaining them by letting them ride on his back. He had apparently fed while with the pod, so their didn't appear to be anything wrong with him. He just left the pod. His trainers moved to Norway and tried to make him join up with other whale pods, but he never would. He would just swim near them before returning to the Fjord. A year later, he contracted pneumonia and died, having rejected life with wild Orcas in favor of life with people. Keiko was a whale born in the wild that spent most of his life in captivity. All attempts to release him failed, and he never joined another Orca pod. If a whale born in the wild did so poorly when returned to the wild, what chance do you think these Orcas born in captivity will have. I hate to say it, but it might be crueler to release them that it would be to keep them in captivity. Besides, not all Orcas do poorly in captivity. Corky at Seaworld San Diego is fifty years old, and she is extremely friendly. She has never been involved in an attack on a trainer. Despite the fact that she hasn't had much luck giving birth, she ended up adopting the calfs of whales who died or that were rejected by their mothers. Also of note about Corky is the fact that her dorsal fin is still straight and rigid, unlike some of the other whales. Based on the life of Corky and some of the other captive whales, it seems to me like some individuals do better in captivity than others. Corky is one of the better cases, while whales involved in fatal incidents like Tilikum are some of the worst. Because these whales are so intelligent and have personalities of their own, individuals respond differently when put in the same situation. Just how well they do in captivity ultimately depends on the individual.
+Temple of the Animal Souls that is mean. Leave them alone and how about you stfu they are only sharing there knowledge on what they know and proving a point of his own. how would you truthfully like it if someone told you what you told them. +Temple of the Animal Souls ignorant comment. S/he makes valid points. Perhaps if u understood anything about animal sociology you might actually have some understanding.
+Curtis Foy you should check out the Documentary Blackfish, Orcas don't belong in small Pools. I get his Point of View and it makes sense. But it's a cruel thing to keep Animals wich have a larger emotinal Brainpart than humans in captivity.
Could it be that Luna's quality of life was improved through interaction with humans? As a social creature, myself, I know that I would rather live a shorter life that included plenty of social interaction, than a long lonely life.
Not true, an orca killed its trainer at Seaworld, Florida, I think in this case though the whale was being friendly, if it wanted to attack the dog then the dog would have been a goner
Awe....that's so cute, we could all learn from this! If two species that couldn't be more different can be friends, why can't we treat our own species with affection?

You know its playful how?
This just breaks my heart:( How lonely it must have been being all alone, seeing as orcas are animals with such strong social bonds and hierarkies.
What was that last word?
Hierarchies
The dog is just yelling "What is you?!" at the orca's face lol. The orca is not helping and just going "Heeeey"
Jinruigaku lol

The ORCA IS FAR MORE CLEVER THAN THE BARKING DOG IT IS A FACT
ALTHOUGH THIS ORCA IS STILL TOO YOUNG LIKE A BABY.
IF THE ORCA WAS ADULT SHE WOULD BE FAR MORE CLEVER.
DOGS ARE DOGS BORE ME
One of the best videos on UA-cam. Rip Luna, you didn’t deserve a so cruel death
That was poor Luna.. (orca not the dog) Watch the movie "The Whale", Narrated by Ryan Reynolds. True story about a lonely orca juvenile orca named Luna who lost contact with his family/pod & started befriending people & local fisherman, boats.
Poor Luna... I wish he was able to reunite with his pod instead of getting killed...

You must be huge if those a little bath tubs

Uchiha Hikaku Are you that stupid? Yeah is he a killer whale?
It simply wanted to play.
thanks for a knowledgeable reply!
Orcas and Dolphins are curious creatures
yes. EASILY. I’ve seen them on youtube when preying for seals. They actually know how to beach themselves to get to them! It’s absolutely amazing! And i’m not one to be easily impressed. These whales are truly out of this world
Awwwwww that is so cute 🥰 Wow ! They are actually playing / communicating to each other & as humans, we really should take notes ✌🏾
I just watched the documentary about him. His story is so heartwarming, yet tragic, it brought tears to my eyes.
Luna was social with people on boats too. He was lonely. We hoped his pod would return before the inevitable happened. It was a sad day.
RIP Luna Sept 19, 1999 - March 10, 2006
How do you know what day he was born?
The first date is not his birth date. It is the first day that he became a member of our community.

That was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen!!❤️
how persh! still misses luna so bad! wolf of the sea...more like water puppy of the sea... the nose kiss was cute.
Megalodon ..bunch of total fuckheads ,what a shame
I never knew that how selfish of them I'm usually on the side of the natives bc they get some raw deals. That situation however was just unnecessary. The animal's rights are more important than some stupid superstition.

Orcas can jump out of water easily. It was just curious about the dog.
Haleh Nather Read the description... Luna died earlier in the year this was posted.
Luna was a beautiful little orca that needed human contact so badly. He got separated from his pod and orca are highly emotional and super intelligent and need the social interaction. He should have been protected better and the First Nations people were willing to try. It’s too bad politics got in the way.
RIP Luna ❣️

Luna was beautiful and such a sweet Orca.
That is so awesome!!
Although I have to say I was a bit afraid for the dog, it was really cool to hear them talking to each other!
I watched that heartbreaking documentary last year. RIP Luna.... such an inquisitive and intelligent soul.
"Luna/L98 was a male southern resident (fish eating) orca who died march 10 2006 when he was hit by a large tug boat in Nookta Sound." ...Humanity strikes again.
There a clearly a communication going on here beyond human understanding.
So true
The dog is talkative and orca likes him!
She is so clever and sweet!!!!
Too cute!
Luna died in an accident years ago.
Whale to dog: "What manner of creature are you?"
Dog to whale: "One beyond your ability to eat [destroy]."
I saw the documentary about Luna and how he socialized with humans, wanted them to play with him and loved their company - the fact that orcas are social mammals shows how much we can learn from them
Such a shame that he suffered a violent death by those he trusted....typical human species..
dogs can make friends with anyone
i guess it's like those baby animals that are so young when they encounter humans that they think we are its parent. once the bond it formed, there's no going back. It's really sad that it didn't know we would be its downfall. RIP Luna!
oh Luna, bless his soul!
SAD. BUT BEAUTIFUL FOOTAGE. LUNA FELT LOVE. YOU CAN TELL. THANKS FOR ALL INVOLVEDS EFFORTS! R.I.P. LUNA.
that's one of coolest things i've ever watched. I love dogs and killer whales. they are obviously connecting on another level we'll never understand.
That is so cute!
MacDaddie9 Sea lions are both hairy and loud so your comment wasn't all that funny.
How very sad! Shows you animals have a lot of feelings
Ann Finger said: "How very sad! Shows you animals have a lot of feelings." Pray tell what is "sad" about animals having feelings? I find it delightful.
I think she meant the story was sad, how Luna died. The feelings part was a separate sentiment.
That's so sweet!! That orca seemed so plaplayful! Like oh you can bark?? Cool! Lool what I can do!!!
I wonder if dogs can hear the higher pitched whale noises that we cant. very interesting
That is so cute! It's amazing how different animals can interact with eachother.
wow it's amazing how the orca recognized the dog as a friend instead of a prey
The dog is like I got this! I will start barking to scare it off! Orca: Heeeeeey
I can't believe how intelligent orcas are 😍
Looked like he wanted a friend. ❤️
wonderful sight very sad what happened to Luna may he RIP
Adorable.
Th Orca isn't aggressive I think he just wants to play and have company.
Amazed at how smart these guys are. Went to the Killer Whale museum in Eden NSW a few weeks ago. Amazing!
i love orca whales.
they are actually dolphins
Yeah.. Have you EVER seen another 'whale' with a prominent DORSAL FIN!??
They are CETACEANS, yes.. but that accounts for ALL WHALES- 'toothed' or Baline (filter feeders), as well as *DOLPHINS & PORPOISES.
*ORCA are not whales!
They are the LARGEST MEMBER OF THE Dolphin Family (Delphinidae).
The translation of 'Whale KILLER' (because *Grey Whales Calves.. Southern Right & even baby humpbacks, and smaller whales are part of *SOME, NOT ALL!! of different Orca Pods diet.
Sad, yes..but the need to eat too.
So... Whale Killer ended up being MISTAKENLY translated to *Killer Whale, DESPITE their specie's name being
Orcinus Orca, of the Delphinidae-'family'.
Not whales. 😊

What a great video! Really shows how intelligent these orcas are.
This is really cute that Luna is saying hello to the dog totally heart breaking what happened to him the cutest thing I have seen by far
I read that whales and dolphins share a common ancestor to wolves and all canines in general. This ancestor made its living between the ocean and land. It branched to those making a living in open oceans and to ones staying on dry land. After all this time, they still share some characteristics and affinity to humans and to each other.
Every animal shares a common ancestor.
RIP Luna I've watch some videos of you and so wish you were still with us your truly missed by all who knew the gentle spirit and friendly face that was displayed by A

Orcas are my favourite creature of all. They are beautiful. ♥️
+Megalodon Let's put you in a bathtub and teach you to do tricks. Like STFU.
+Temple of the Animal Souls that is mean. +Temple of the Animal Souls ignorant comment. S/he makes valid points. Perhaps if u understood anything about animal sociology you might actually have some understanding.

Could it be that Luna's quality of life was improved through interaction with humans? As a social creature, myself, I know that I would rather live a shorter life that included plenty of social interaction, than a long lonely life.

Luna was a southern resident orca meaning he only at fish he would never even dream of hurting a dog.
Not true, an orca killed its trainer at Seaworld, Florida, I think in this case though the whale was being friendly, if it wanted to attack the dog then the dog would have been a goner

Humans usually kill animals they encounter. Only in the recent past has man become more humane regarding other animals. So to portray another animal as human-like would be portraying it as the murderous naked apes we are.
