It's amazing the amount of battle damage a B-17 could take and still keep flying.
You can't see from outside, how many of the crew members are already dead.
Welll it is not a zero
Keep flying des not mean return to base. There are hits with direct consequences, but the most hits have consequences for the maneuverability. Crews who have flown more than 6 missions have been very rare.

the explosive power behind the Minengeschoss shells is incredible, and well demonstrated here.
Most of the explosions are the 20mm shells, and the really big ones are the 30mm. Also shows the power difference between them.
I wonder if the P-51 would have been better with 4 x 50 cals and 2 x 20mm Hispanos. I bet they tried it at some point.
@@hahaaukko1127 The original British spec for the P51 was 4x Hispanos if I recall correctly.
Any fighter is better armed with cannons than machine guns, even .50’s. That’s what every major air force (other than the USA) focused on cannon armament for all their fighters by the end of the war.
When the F-86 Sabre was fighting in Korea it was the skill of the USAF pilots that lead to its 13:1 kill ratio.
However it should have been higher. The 6 x .50’s were found to be insufficient to cause the damage required on the Mig 15’s, allowing many to escape despite being hit repeatedly.
This lead to the USAF instigating Project GunVal with 12 F-86F’s being modified to carry 20mm cannons instead of .50’s and fielded operationally in 1953.
Despite no conclusive results it was felt that there was sufficient evidence to recommend all new USAF fighters be cannon equipped.
That’s why no USAF fighters were equipped with .50’s after the Korean War.
The 20mm Minengeschoß contained 18 grams of high explosive fill and usually took down a heavy bomber with 20-25 hits, while the 30mm Minengeschoß contained 85 grams of high explosive fill and usually took down a heavy bomber with 3-5 hits.
No music. Thank you 👌
Makes you realize that every man fighting had a family. War truly is terrible.
a couple of rare ones here, the mustang with the drop tanks and the spitfire exploding. I wonder if the specific actions can be identified!
Those particular clips were from propaganda newsreels so unfortunately stripped of all context
@@hw97karbine there are many reels of cg footage at the Imperial War Museum as British forces overran a Luftwaffe training school where the footage was found. I believe the high flying Spitfire was attacked by an Me262. It’s obvious the Spitfire has no clue that he is there. It’s also at very high altitude, so I wonder if it was a PRU Spitfire. The original sequence is longer and the attacker comes up VERY fast. There are also reels of attack analysis mainly on Russian aircraft with target overlays and analysis of bullet spread etc. The other sequence of an attack on a spitfire shows the Spitfire’s turn rate advantage well too.
the fact that the Mustang had drop tanks still on means that the German had the jump on him. Sometimes people forget that many in many cases you get shot down by the guy you don't even know is there. The Red Barron apparently said that most of his kills never saw him coming. Always watch your 6.
@@hw97karbine Yes, although possibly meant to look superficially like a Spitfire it clearly is not when looking at the wing shape. If the image is frozen at 1:03 it is difficult to tell what aircraft it actually is. Might even be Russian.

You can deffinitly tell the experinaced pilots from the begginers by how long of a burst they are shooting. The ace does a short burst only when it is almost garunteed to hit, saving his ammo for the next target. the beginners hold the trigger and walk the tracer rounds toward the enemy

Biggest respect to the Flying Fortress tail gunners,. They're literally trapped inside a steel box facing head on to an enemy aircraft, and more likely to become the first one to be hit
RIP
That'd really be anyone in the front since German pilots were trained to at least make their first pass on them from the front as there's less guns looking ahead and you could take the aircraft down quickly by killing the pilots
Aluminium box.
The B-17’s aluminium fuselage was the thickness of a credit card. Whereas it protected aircrews from the elements, it was useless against bullets, especially the BF-109’s 20mm cannon shells.
Aircrews heads and limbs were literally blown off.

I always find it incredible how some fighter pilots keep flying straight and level while they're being shot to pieces.
I don't think I could do that even if I wanted to!
They are either unaware they're being hit (sensory overload) or the pilot is hit himself and can't react.
@@crazeemunkee most of the where shot over Germany, they were flying probably from England and were already tired. They simply didn't have the energy required to do evasive maneuvers.

@@alfredware Not so, if you were being shot at then you will definitely find the energy to take action if you were capable of it or wished to do so. Adrenaline would be coursing through their bodies. The Spitfire probably took little action because he was probably fixated on getting the Ju88. Bomber crews often took tablets to keep them awake on the way to and from Germany when on night ops because night dulled the senses.

The clip at 1:18 over Malta is interesting. I have seen the full video clip, and it illustrates the Spitfire turning more tightly than the ME109 so that the ME109 cannot get the Spitfire into his sight for a deflection shot. The complete footage shows the Spitfire turn getting tighter and out turning the ME109 until he gets away. Manoeuvring very rarely captured on film.
The Hurricane at 1:52 is definitely not over Malta, looks more like South East Asia (probably Burma aka the Arakan) with the river and foothills, so possibly Japanese gun camera footage.
The war is a long time over, it is a pity that many commentators cannot remember that.
Both clips that you mentioned are in this Luftwaffe reel: ua-cam.com/video/_EWeORVGMNE/v-deo.html
Japanese gun camera footage seems to be exceedingly rare so I doubt it would have been spliced into such a compilation.
Very good quality; good dynamic range, good resolution and really minimal compression issues. It's almost like watching the projected film directly.
1:59.... A butchered crew. What a mess.
Vedere queste immagini fa' sempre un immenso piacere.
I can't imagine the feelings that a gunner in either the ball turret or the tail gun must have had watching those heavy caliber shells coming in and hitting. @@hajoos.8360 This is ww2 if im not mistaken, Germany declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor, and the UK told Germany that they'd declare war if Germany invaded Poland, which they did. So both the US and UK being at war is entirely because of German and Italian aggression.
@@lkohlb3773 To evaluate history, there is more to say than 2 sentences. Germany wanted it's territories back. This is a legal approach. Britain & France declared war over Germany, because the invasion of Poland, right. But why Britain & France did not declared war over the Sovjetunion, which invaded Poland, too? This prooves that Britain & France wanted war, for whatever any reasons occur. And Hitler's declaration of war over the US was simply a formal aspect. Because the US waged already war against Germany by escorting convois & selling destroyers to Britain. And the entire reason, why Germany must claim for it's territory is concernd by WWI. Wonderful!
I have never seen return fire coming from the bombers. Did they not use tracer, so it can't be seen? Or had the gunners already been hit? Particularly on B17s the ball turrets never seem to move.
Tracer is harder to see when it's coming towards you. Here is an example of a B-17G firing back, you can see the puffs of smoke from the ball and tail turrets firing, but no tracers are visible: i.imgur.com/8hwfSE2.gifv
Very often the fighters would only close in to such ranges, when the aircraft was crippled and had fallen out of formation and the gunners had been silenced one way or another.
I can't remember correctly, but I am under the impression that one of the famous guncam reels of a B-17 taking a beating is from a plane whose crew had already bailed. This was used for propaganda purposes, as it was more impressive to see the looming behemoth on screen for more than just a few frames. The head-on shot on the B-24 with the shells exploding in the cockpit is more representative of a preferable attack strategy.
The 109 and 190 pilots I knew, all agreed that getting in close and personal on a "Viermot" from the rear quarter needs bravery very close to stupidity. One preferred being a night fighter and did not hold the 109 in particularly fond memories.
@@hw97karbine Isn't that the start of the famous clip where the fighter is hitting the ball turret and rakes the wing and engines?
@@Slahinki yes here is an analysis: imgur.com/a/tDwlo Some people seem to think the plane had been abandoned but there are no apparent cuts in the footage and no one bails out between the guns firing and the Bf 110 closing in.

Very nice aim. Better than most players in WT.

This is real thing man not movie scene or video games ; hate to see our guys being shot to pieces
1:32 That Spitfire might just have turned the tables on his pursuer. He drops low out of frame and then reefs a really hard turn.
Wow 2:00 is crazy. A perfect head on pass on a B-24, thw entire burst hit the cockpit head on. There is no way that bomber made it home....
0:42 That's an ambitious deflection shot.
Your typical 20mm cannon is firing at around 675 rounds per minute, so at a given point in the line of fire there is a shell every 0.0889 seconds.
A P-51 Mustang would easily be flying at 170 meters per second and is 10 meters long. This means that it covers its own length in 0.0588 seconds, therefore it is entirely possible that a Mustang flying perpendicular to a burst of cannon fire can fly between the shells.
@@hw97karbine the German fighter was most likely also firing the two MG131 machine guns with higher rate of fire though.
That's true, but at best it would have achieved only a handful of hits, it would have been extremely unlucky for the Allied pilot to be critically damaged.
@@hw97karbine well, actually the top is the only unprotected side of the canopy (there was armoured seat, armoured windshield, but only a thin layer of plexiglass on the top).
Even a single rifle bullet landing in the unprotected canopy can make a lot of damage.

If this was War Thunder every single one of those aircraft would have had a wing or a tail completely sheer off from 1 round of a german 20mm mg151
Yeah, that's what I also thought, when comparing it to games. But it's also interesting to see, how other parts fall off. Btw. the after penn. effects in tanking is also a bit exaggerated.
If this was War Thunder, most of these German planes would have been pilot sniped or lit on fire by .50 cals in a single burst
Try playing simulator, bombers there are OP as fuck as you get sniped by 50 cal or your engine killed from shermans 50cal..
@@Ivzu The problem with games is, that you only have to aim at those 5 pixels presenting a plane in the distance. Real live has a far greater resolution ;)
@@0Turbox Well mouse aim obviously gives huge advantage.
I would have loved to hear what this sounded like.
"neeeeeoooowwww dakka dakka dakka!!!"
Man, that Mustang with its drop tanks got chewed up. Judging by the recoil at 0:40, that Spitfire must've been hit by a 30mm cannon.
If you look closely at the P-51's left wing it's a mess, and there's what looks like .50 cal belts coming off it. I counted 5 hits and judging only by the apparent coolant leak caused by the first hit, that bird definitely didn't make it home.
@@hw97karbine Not so sure if those are .50 cal belts, they look more like large pieces of the aileron, but the left-wing machine guns definitely got damaged. And yeah, with that big plume of coolant spray, it would only be a matter of time before the engine became disabled. Those hits had to be from a 20mm cannon, at least.
@@hw97karbine And those extra hits on the cockpit canopy? I'll bet those rounds went right by the pilot's head.
@@chpman2013 Split to frames here are the 5 hits:
1 to the lower fuselage, that obviously hits the cooling system and causes an immediate coolant leak: i.imgur.com/JWGcH1f.gif
2 to the left wing, this has obviously disrupted the flying surfaces considerably, we can see the damage compared to the intact right wing and the significant amount of debris that flies off: i.imgur.com/M9wN8pk.gif
3 looks like a hit to the left horizontal tail surfaces: i.imgur.com/45X2N3e.gif

5 is obscured with smoke so no way to tell the location: i.imgur.com/a48ZxwE.gif
The element of supprise! If the P51 pilot knew he was there, he would have jettison his drop tanks and made evasive manoeuvres. Not saying he wouldn't have been shot down, just he would have had a better chance not to.

Schnaufer was a night fighter hunting bombers.
Marseille was probably the best pilot of WW2 alltogether in terms of raw skill.
Marseille was very meticulous. He didn't take chances. That's why he lived long enough to rack up kills. Many pilots were not cool enough and got themselves killed very quickly.
@@testboga5991 I partially disagree. Marseille was indeed cool headed in combat but he sometimes did get reckless. Well, it's no surprise considering the man was known for his rebellious nature.
Yes, they did rack up a lot of kills, however, quite a few were against far non-equal aircraft, like bi-planes and very very early mono-planes. I'll bet if you look it up, once equal or superior fighters entered the fight with experienced pilots, their kills went down dramatically.

You can really tell they were trained to aim for engines
The best way to prevent the bomb load from being delivered to the target is to simply weaken the propulsive power that a fully loaded machine so deeply relies on.
One swift pass could knock out one engine and the mission would most likely be over for that unit. And the fighter pilot would not risk too much. Remember, they also wanted to live another day.
Considering the statistics of sorties flown vs the inflicted casualties within the Civilians , then each bomber caused 80 deaths and double or triple the number of wounded and invalids .

Those 30mm mk 108 guns were absolutely devastating.
Every frame of this film, men are terrified and dying. Same with the Allied gun camera footage. War is terrible but sometimes, necessary.
Interesting to see so many B-17 with open bomb bay doors. I wonder whether its pure coincidence or whether there is some selection bias. Maybe these planes experienced some mechanical failure with the door and the additional drag meant they fell out of formation, leaving them as easy pray for Luftwaffe pilots? Pure speculation of course.

The Spitfire at the 0:39 mark appears to be a USAAF recon job, as if you run the footage at 0.25 speed, you can briefly see the star and white bar insignia on the top of the left wing when it dips @ 0:40.
