If you have any recs put them below! 🤍
Violet Evergarden was the first anime I watched. I’d say it’s pretty underrated :) I didn’t think it’s super fanservicey either. Also hi Lavendertowne!!
I LOVE MADOKA MAGICA!! ^^^ I feel like fanservice is so wrapped into anime that it's difficult to suggest an anime with no fanservice because there's always some sort of thing in it😭 That being said, I highly suggest Satoshi Kon's films if anyone's looking for psychological stuff, they don't really have any sort of fanservice
migi to dali is a short comedy/ mystery anime without fanservice, along with the promised neverland (shonen/mystery) which even has a girl lead, wonder egg priority, tokyo revengers has mostly men but its a gang anime where none of the men have toxic masculinity are some of my best recs

Reminds me of Lotus from Zero Escape. I remember at one point she's called an "exhibitionist grandma" by Seven, a character who is 5 years older than her!
Fr they're fake grandma lovers >:(
Remember everyone. There's two kinds of fanservice. Pervert slop and actual fanservice.
And references to past work
@Coldkid775 that's part of actual fanservice. I think she mentions it in the video
I love it when it's the "the characters acknowledge the audience" fanservice and not the one for the basement dwellers.
Perhaps they should just go back to calling the slop what it is: pandering to the audience. "Fanservice" is a softening of the term, like you're performing some sort of useful task for the fans.
All pervert slop is fanservice but not all fanservice is pervert slop.
Being a larger chested woman, I appreciate you keeping the first woman’s body. Usually when people “desexualize” a scene or image, they completely remove things that can be completely normal for someone to have and is not the main problem.
Agreed. Its part of the character's design. You may as well change red heads to having brown hair because people like red heads.
Yeah, I agree. The only problem I see is:
1: every female character has the same big boobs thin hourglass body type.
2: either that or when there is some body diversity in the female characters, that diverge from said body type are stereotyped/caricaturized as villains, punching bags or gross
3: female characters that have the thin but still have big boobs and hourglass body types are hyper sexualized to the point where their whole entire character is just being sexualized and nothing else. (this can also result in jokes about said female character body type getting sexualized by usually male characters who fantasize about said female character which can get very creepy very quick)
booba
I agree, however, I would have made the anatomy a little more realistic. I’m VERY big chested, and unless I’m wearing a very uncomfortable bra, my tatas don’t look like torpedos!
The “girls” jiggle, they’re a little droopy, their size changes my center mass. They DO not constantly look like stiff, oversized lemons!
Traditional anime breasts give men a very warped view of what a woman’s body actually looks like. I’m tired of my body type being called ugly because my chest doesn’t literally defy gravity.
@@KethrieDyrdahl agreed!
4:30 preach because I see a lot of artists ‘fixing’ these types of characters and literally just remove all of their chest and legs as if people with big boobs and thighs don’t exist 😭
But come on. You guys know exactly why they're doing it, and it's not for inclusion/representation. Stop coping. People do not commonly look like that. 🤦🏾♀️
@@Meeshilin_Man but we shouldnt swing completely the other way - like lavendertowne said in the video, these body types can exist without being fanservice. its a nuanced thing, and just erasing people who look like that entirely isnt good either.
@@milodoesntknow2090exactly! A lot of women who are more chubbier expcjally may have bigger boobs or thighs due to all the fat going to there :)
@@milodoesntknow2090 Oh no, yeah, I totally agree. But not every female protag needs Double-Ds, 2 inch waist, and birthing hips. Do large chested girls even feel comfortable with these portrayals most of the time?
Both people are right here. It’s not common to look like that, but we shouldn’t remove it all. But uh, yeah author and creators should have a variety of body types, and not have it clearly just be there for fan service. :/
Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon) Is by far the most amazing Manga/Anime when it comes to drawing age and beautiful character designs. The artist, Ryoko Kui, made sure the characters could be recognized if they lost their hair, if their species changed, or if they have different outfits. Its beautiful, and any of the "Mature" scenes are clearly not fanservice.
Oh yes this is on my to watch list!! All my friends are loving it ^^

Hestia as an old woman makes so much more sense. She’s the goddess of the home. She’s supposed to be the one who waits for you at home and tends to the house and family and makes sure everything is warm, healthy, feed and cared for. She’s a family based goddess. She’s also the oldest goddess, she was born first. So having her be an old “grandma” who just makes you feel warm and wants to take care of you is perfect
It isn’t, same lore tells the story that she is the oldest but looks like the youngest it didn’t help she was the last to be thrown out from Cronus.
Again her myth emphasizes it more after Poseidon and Apollo fight for her hand complimenting her young yet beautiful body and looks.
Then her myth comes again with Priapus wanting to rape Hestia when she was sleeping making emphasis about her beauty.
Her looking old don’t make sense at all, actually no one of the big Gods children of Cronus looks old, the boys at most have a beard in their description and that’s it.
@@zerotsolar9742 I think most depictions of hestia were a bit closer to the idea of the hearth and warm and safe home from the lens of warriors going home to their wives maybe?
@@zerotsolar9742 not to um actually you but… Actually in most representations of her she’s either shown as a super old woman or a young child, two things associated with home. And as for myths about people finding her attractive - people can find older women attractive, that’s why the “mommy” fetish is a thing. Some people find women who are post-menopausal or have had birth attractive, but birth especially can change the shape of your body for the rest of your life. Also there is the very real chance of pedophilia, which unfortunately was a thing in Ancient Greece.
Even then, there’s no set descriptions of Greek Gods. It was a changing religion that represented humanity during its time. Most Ancient Greek artists represented her as old or young, so we assume that she is either or both. Idk where you’re getting the “boys have a beard in their description” thing from, but there shouldn’t be any set descriptions. If there is, it’d take a quick google search to realise how convoluted the concept of her appearance is. Sometimes she’s a kid, sometimes she’s a young woman, sometimes she’s middle aged, sometimes she’s super old.
@@crystaltefari7946 Yeah, greek myths being so convoluted and usually explicitly NOT having a consensus on any specific thing just makes it so much weirder for people to complain when someone picks a specific depiction, like people complaining that Hades didn't make her an underaged girl with big boobs.
@@zerotsolar9742 can't God's like change how they look or transform, also the Japan one over sexualizes her, and the more old grandma look really makes me like her, I actually wouldn't mind if she looked like that irl, but the Japan one is more of a fetish plus if I saw that...I would be terrified, and be uncomfortable due to the clothing she's wearing, also it seems like they're in a village which... doesn't fit the clothing at all
Also both sides are wrong if we're saying the truth, your explanation doesn't help and actually rather useless to how they should look as God's have no apparent looks, plus even then she'll be naked as God's are considered perfect and there's no need to change them, and perfect surely isn't humans, as humans are rather complex, weak too, the only reason we're alive is because we're smarter/adapt faster in a bit, we're not fast at running, we're not one the strongest, we can't fly, but we can grab things, so God's would be a mix of humans a other animals as remember humans are animals themselves.
your redesign of the granny is so much better. badass elderly women = peak
I was getting "Genkai" vibes, if only because the pool of badass eldery women in anime is so shallow. I want to know more about the lady in the redesign. She seems neat.
Truth. Honestly, despite her looking older I actually got a small crush because her fashion sense was just so bad ass. Like, her old design was just some generic fan service lady with wierd hair. The one she made is brimming with personality. Like I want to get to KNOW this lady
So true. I love badass elderly in anime.
I wouldnt say 'better' as a design in general, I love seikos design a LOT but for an elderly woman yeah its better at conveying that

As a greek person who learned about greek mythology both through school and outside of school, the mere Idea of someone saying that Hestia, the goddess of hospitality, is so much better if she's drawn with tore clothes, barely anything clothes too rather than a beautiful and inviting woman actually offendeds me to no end.
I'm not greek but I love greek mythology and I was also mad

There is such a difference between fanservice for men vs. Women. Usually fanservice for women is a male character doing something cool, or skilled, while in a nice outfit which makes them look capable/competent/talented and sexy. Fanservice for men so often is just upskirt shots, or “Oh no I slipped and landed in a super compromised position” or “oh no almost all my clothes conveniently got ripped off during this fight”. One treats the character as a person, an attractive person, while the other treats the character like an object
not to mention how male-centric fanservice is so blatant and ooga booga it feels like it's insulting the viewer's intelligence
@@b.collins2656Considering there's people (even under this video) who defend it just because it's fiction - i think anime is right about their intelligence.
I wish there is a counter part anime where they just secualize men in the same way as women xd. Just so we have a reference to how it looks like and feels. Like "oops, when fighting a sword suddenly grazed my dick, as it tried to wobbrl out of it, the cloth got ripped apart and now only the bare minimum is covered, how unfortunate".
A man in a meeting: something shocking happens. You get a upward facing shot where the male expressed disbelief. You see his face twitching, his muscle tensing and oh would you look at that, his package is also there in the lower screen, twitching. I mean you cant blame the camera fir being there, its only natural for the camera to Film it since its in that position.
That would be funny and interesting to see hahahahah
@ yeah even if it was like one joke episode in an anime. I think men would get very upset at all the uncomfortable and compromising situations
Fanservice of men often sexualizes men in the same way, it's just not mainstreamed. Art for romance novels or fanart of male characters being sexy, or a lot of media directed at gay men.
Straight guys avoid it like the plague
I’m gonna be so real when you swapped the first one I actually went 🗿
You’re so right though, I’ve never thought about it, but it is really easy to be desensitized to it. I hadn’t even realized how bad that first one was until you flipped it.
Even though I've seen a meme from that I agree like girl characters are fanservice and revealing but guys aren't like I'm just saying 🤷♀️
Her male version of the female design showed significantly more skin than the original female design. It's not a great execution of the idea
@@Caiser tbh for how much female characters get sexualized for fan service also with how much is it in that anime ig it's it's certainly a good representation
@@Caiseri feel like it would've made more sense if she made him more muscular around his chest and just added a white shirt with the boob-window thing like Hestia's 😭
@@Caiserwell you can't exactly show nips in anime without it being defined as a hentai. Correction, women nips. And in anime boys and girls are sexualized in different ways, even though the sexualization always leans heavily to femininity it doesn't mean there aren't masculine designs that are treated the same. Plus oftentimes in cartoons shorts = boys and top + shorts = girls, it makes sense still

THANK YOU for saying this, so many people brush it off as Japan having a "different culture" or it simply being an "artistic choice" like they didnt just draw an 11 year old girl half naked and moaning or something-- the absolute worst part is how defensive people get about it and it happens so often that ive started to wonder if im in the wrong for thinking having a show where literally all the women are in underwear constantly and fighting over the main character is bad so thank you so so much for this
Fr like I thought ‘Maybe I’m just overreacting’ so many times over the sickening things I’ve seen in anime.
This why i just can't watch anime...
For me in anime , if youre gonna sexualize youre female characters...atleast give the male ones the same treatment , like if you put them in exposing clothing , put the men in exposing clothing aswell , AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE ALL ADULTS MOST IMPORTANT!!!!
(Also love that she added a shot of doukyusei♡ i love this anime so much)
a lot of male characters can be seen shirtless specially in Shounen series, normally with great abs, if you ask me the biggest problem about the conversation are people acting like shows such as He-Man and Thundercats are not sexualizing their male main characters, the double standards are created by a very victimist mentality and maybe some intelectual dishonest.
There aught to be a rule that for every woman in a chainmail bikini, there must be a man cosplaying Conan the Barbarian; bare legs and tiddies out and all.
@@solitarioerrante4296 the difference is intent. A lot of shows do have men shirtless or have noticeable abs, but most scenes really don't focus on it. You hardly ever see shows where they go out of their way to zoom in and position the camera in ways where you see the abs first and the character second.
@@solitarioerrante4296 Your comparison is very off, because your examples of male characters being sexualised are ones where the scene is supposed to be seen from the perspective of the male characters. This is the opposite of objectifying, and in terms of wish fulfillment, it's about conveying how great it feels to be as strong as these characters. It elevates the characters' perspectives.
This is very different from how the female characters are being treated in these examples. I won't elaborate on this a lot because it should be obvious, but I think an easy to understand example is the one at 11:40. From the character's perspective, this is her being worried and showing care for the protagonist, but the show decided that this shouldn't matter to the viewer, as it's drowned out by the full frame being covered by her boobs and comedic sound effects. The character's perspective doesn't matter, and instead the scene becomes about viewing her as an object of lust. In other words, it's objectifying.
If you want to see real examples of male characters being objectified, you shouldn't look inside shounen series, but instead, look at some shoujo ones. Quite a few have a "mysterious black-haired prince with a cold demeanor but is in love with the female protagonist", whose perspective sometimes counts for something, but who usually just exists to fulfill the role of being the heroine's love interest.
@@solitarioerrante4296 You don't seriously believe that Goku flexing and roaring while he powers up or Zoro working out with his comically large weights has the same intention as the female lead falling boob-first on the protagonist with a big "booooing" sound for the 43385735th time. To even be literate you have to be at least a little smarter than that, so you're either lying to us or to yourself. Be honest with yourself if nothing else.
The author from Dungeon Meshi was probably tired of this too 😂 she put some fan service in there for the female gaze and I will always appreciate her for that.
And it's not like she didn't make most of the characters attractive, she just made them attractive in so many different ways. Laois, Falin, Kabru, Marcille, Mithrun, Senshi, and Namari (and a bunch of other side characters) are all very attractive men and women representing a bunch of different body types.
Yes!!! I adore all the "fanservice" scenes with characters like Senshi
It's such a breath of fresh air. And the female characters are genuinely just so pretty, without needing to wear revealing clothes or being exploited.
We can oogle at a hot guy in full plate armor, or a pretty woman who is fully clothed. It's genuinely so good
The senshi panty shots are great
From what I've read, the author doesn't find them attractive, and the female gaze was completely unintentional.
interestingly, she has said in interveiws she does not see the appeal of senshi (in terms of his attractiveness) and the "panty shots" were just because she had a neighbour who would walk around in his underwear, and she just thought it would be funny to include it.
she draws body types in realistic, naturaul way, with a lot of variation. which is why they're all so attractive, because her charachter desighns are just artistically amazing. shes so peak.
A good example of a senior fashionista is Betsey Johnson! she’s 80 and she still has a presence as a famous fashion designer. In all her elderly glory, she shows off her style excellently.
Iris Apfel is a good representation of an elder fashionista, too!
@ omg so true I love her style!!! May she rest in peace🩷 her fashion makes me very happy. I might get big glasses like hers if I can
Ugh, I read a story from someone on Reddit or something. They were 🍇 by an older male friend who watched anime. Someone they trusted, she said that he did it cause she looked like his favorite anime girls and couldn't comprehend that there should be a line there. This was a couple of years ago, and I think about it a lot. It hurts me to my core when I see women who look like me get treated so horribly, knowing that it causes people to suffer.
That’s horrible no one should have to go through that (regardless, if they look like an anime character or not) :/
That's a sad story, bit I have a hard time believing it cause of one factor: it was on reddit
People notoriously make up stories on there, I would belive it of it was fron any other source tbh
All men wake up
@Iamliterallythatgirl
Forgive me wha is tha metaphor for?-😭
I mean, the issue seems way more than just anime here.
You're not taking this too seriously at all. Making female pain "sexy" not only makes it difficult for viewers to empathise with the characters, but when it's so prevalant, teaches the viewers that women's pain, at best, doesn't matter and at worst is nothing more than fetish material.
Your redesigns are great and now I'm sad we don't live in a universe where Ayase's granny looks like a granny 😭
I remember when my bosses (both male in their late 20s) recommended me this anime movie called Mind Games and I just couldn’t make it past the hour mark. They turned the prominent female character’s attempted SA scene into the male character’s heroic fantasy, then decided to objectify her with revealing outfits (that the story treats as comedy) and made the so-called heroic main character into a ‘goofy peeping Tom.’ The movie got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and my bosses treated it like it was some incredible piece of art. I thought I was going insane. Anytime someone covers a topic that addresses stuff like this, an Angel grows like 90 pairs of wings and 30+ generations of puppies find their homes ISTG 😭😭
LITERALLY. Having a kink that you explore CONSENSUALLY with a partner or on your own (while understanding that it’s just a kink and you shouldn’t force it on other people) is a whole different thing than putting that shit into a show or anime for unsuspecting viewers to come across. I HATE when shows do that. It’s so gross, especially when it is ALWAYS women that are the victims. Literally all I ask is that media with that stuff in it advertised itself as 🌽 (with full knowledge, btw, that 🌽 DEFINITELY contributes to how young men see women… so it’s not that marketing it correctly will even help that much, but it’s the bare minimum.) And they can’t even do that.
This is why less fanservice-y shows have been included in the greats, but shows like the dungeon one never do. When you objectify women in your show, you effectively miss the chance to make a great character. When you choose not to objectify your female cast and instead treat them like real people, their writing shines through as we're given the time to feel what they feel instead of making a joke out of what they feel

It's really unfortunate. There are tons of amazing anime stories, but anime as a medium is held down because so many of them keep sexualizing children.

@@father270It's the reason why I refuse to watch Dandadan. I was going to watch it for the animation but the moment I realized that scene existed, it turned me off from the show immediately. It is genuinely so despicable and upsetting to use a teenage girl's assault as fanservice.

my biggest pet peeve with fanservice, is that most of the time, it's a character who is underage, like why?, especially when there are plenty of hot adult characters who can be fan serviced instead
I have so many comments, but overall agree! mentioning the 'grandma' in dandadan, i was cheering for your redesign because hell yeah old women are gorgeous and wrinkles arent gross or flaws and they can totally have killer style! its why i love 90s woman so much since they really look more their age and mature (instead of lolis ; -; ). also agree about kanna in not only her skirt, but while i would definitely dote and love and scream about her cuteness, its the shots of the interactions and the portrayal of the two that makes things uncomfortable.
My biggest issue with the grandma seiko redesign is that it ignores a lot of the silent story telling in her original design. Her looking surprisingly young is part of her character, and changing that misses the point of alot of her activities. She lives a paranormal, stress free lifestyle. A lot of working out, wearing eye covers, wearing compression clothing, avoiding drama news, and being linked with regional spirits. Her youthful appearance is part of her character and story, not just her design
@@skelebrosgaming2187 without watching the show ofc, uh; unless there's some kind of curse on her to be hot for some reason, people age and can have wrinkles even if they haven't done much in life
all you're saying is that she's healthy, and that can be done while still showing someone who has aged in any way because what you see on the surface isn't always what is, like how bodybuilders for show can't do as much as those who have weight but strong muscles under there
@@GalaxyGamer0960 Like I explained before, it's not just her lifestyle, it's also her connection to the local spirits. Mediums tend to live longer and age better than the average person. I never said she was just healthy, but her youthful appearance is an actual part of her character. She's supposed to be a prime example of self care and mental/physical health, someone full of energy and youth because of her practice, despite her age. They even use a contrast of that lifestyle, her smoking, as a way to humanize her beyond that as well. Her smoking is a contrast to her active, healthy, and care free life, and to show that she's still caught up in old habits, pushed further by her not believing in aliens.
There's other older characters in the series as well, who are all drawn to look more elderly to match their age, but Seiko is supposed to look surprisingly young, as it's pointed out multiple times.
While I understand the general concern over characters following too hard into fan service type designs, the opposite side can be just as toxic of a view point. It simply judges characters based off of their appearance, instead of their actual character, just like people who enjoy extreme fan service. Look at all of the male protagonists in anime. As you said, body builders have huge controlled sets of muscles, but that physique isn't good for actual strength and endurance. Yet most buff male characters are drawn like body builders, even though that muscle setup isn't good for strength, let alone fighting. But that muscle structure is there to show their discipline and training, as that type of body is a lifestyle to live by.
Tl:Dr, it's better to ask why the character looks like that rather than to criticize it for not fitting into norms. Not all characters of an age or gender are gonna have the same design as their IRL counterpart. While good character designs tell you a lot about the character, the things that you don't see are just as important. While I agree with a lot of characters in anime being designed to be conventionally attractive is a bit of an issue, Grandma Seiko is probably the worst example to put, and it makes one's view just as surface level as fan service.
uhhuh and Quiet "breathes through her skin" * eyeroll *
I totally disagree on the overall point tho
Seiko's character design doesn't imply Dandadan's author can't put middle-aged / old women at the center of the story, as it literally happens later
All the "must be pretty to be at the center of the story" stuff might be a tendency, but not for Dandadan's author imo.

Also, Hestia literally pledged virginity because she is so attractive she was constantly harassed by men who wanted to wed her. She didn't want to get r*ped, that's why she did it.

How is Hades Hestia worse than the Anime one? Hestia in Greek mythology is described like a grandmother. Being a hot young girl is the antithesis to that goddess. And lets be honest when the creators of Hades don't make a god hot it has a f-ing reason because they normally don't miss an opportunity- see Hephaestus.
Because every aspect of every piece of media must cater exclusively to horny bros, or else it's woke mind virus destroying society.

@giuseppeagresta1425 honestly I hate how much the characters have ended up without clothing like in the most recent episode the mmc is butt naked and the two fmcs are both in nothing but undergarments which is a strange choice considering they're in I think high-school
I think it all just comes down to (primarily) men on Twitter who have never seen a living, breathing woman before. I’ve seen an endless onslaught of people who think the most normal looking woman is “woke” somehow and then “fixing” the design by making them half naked and given a full face of makeup. It’s deeply frustrating, but also another reason that I’m so glad that Arcane did well. Because it showed us so many different and super cool female designs, instead of the typical s@xual dimorphism you see in media between masculine and feminine characters
I don't exactly agree, though I guess it'd be kinda the same phenomenon... but I think it's more due to the culture around manga and anime in japan. As I understand it, if you wanna live off of being a mangaka in japan, you kinda have to make your life about it, not doing much else than churning out pages every day all day, which means that you probably won't have a lot of time to "touch grass".
Maybe you have a bit of time for your hobby, which might be manga and anime. And for better or worse, those can further indoctrinate you into using the same tropes
Also merch sales probably has an effect
But that's just my uneducated guess ^^'

Violet evergraden and My Happyily Marriages are my top favorite anime series because of how beautiful and emotional it is.. the characters can be beautiful without making them fan service target.

As someone who also loves the Violet Garden anime, sadly even the LN wasn’t safe from fan service. The anime toned it way down thankfully. One of the first chapters had a scene where an old man ogles at Violet’s chest after she takes a shower in his house 🤢

In fact, sexualizing Hestia would probably be blasphemy, because she was explicitly a virgin goddess. Her status as such was likely sacred, like Artemis.
And, if anything, Hades' design of Aphrodite blows anime out of the water. She's straight up _nude._ And it _fits her deific domain and canonical personality._ Also, Dionysus in Hades II? Simply distracting.

I've seen the storytelling and art that can come from anime. It's endlessly disappointing when a story that has the potential to be something is undercut by a "gag" of repeat panty shots or straight up grape. Aphrodite is depicted with having stomach flab (rolls) and is still known as the goddess of love (fun fact, many sculptors of Aphrodite depict her with having flab).
Hypnos is depicted with a sleep mask (which I think is adorable) as he is the god of sleep.
Chaos is depicted to not have a specific gender which is a gorgeous touch to how they embody chaos itself.
Zeus looks like a grandpa which is fitting cuz he’s the ruler of the gods
Poseidon’s hair is literally made of water cuz he’s the god of the sea
Athena looks like a shield
Artemis has a little “scar” on her eye that’s green, representing her boons from the actual game itself
Ares is completely black with the exception of white skin streaked across his face (I like to image they added that cuz he wears shades all the time and got the wildest tan lol)
HERMES HAS WINGS ON HIS HEAD. (Also he says Hrrnnnnngghh)
Demeter’s hair forms a scarf in the first game. Cute detail.
Also something cool to note about Nyx’s design is that she has these little purple moondrops scattered in her design which represent “darkness” from in game. (Darkness is like an in game currency and can be used to permanently upgrade your abilities)
Cool thing to note about Hades design is that he has rings on his fingers with gemstones inside. This is there cuz he is also associated with riches.
(Not exactly gods but fun detail is that both Zagreus and Melinoë have different colored eyes. One is green and one is red. Green representing Persephone with her green eyes and red representing Hades with his red eyes. Just fun detail.)

It's upsetting and gross. Heterosexual women and queer people are more than often left out, as if our opinions and preferences weren't worthy enough to be represented in popular medias.
Of course, because it always has to be about you, you and once again you (i mean queer people and a few other groups). pretty sure there's an anime with Jeezy boi in it
OMG YOU ATE SO HARD WITH THE DDD DESIGN!! I wish more animes would embrace the juxtaposition of visibly older characters doing "younger" people things. Like athletic Granny with a weapon!!! Sick!!!
BRO, the ACCIDENTAL METAPHOR at 11:15 - the fact that we’re getting the monster’s view on the first panel??? my god
i love these videos so much. it feels like there’s so much passion & thought put into them, while still making it fun by redesigning & drawing the characters. i forget what the name of the video was, but there’s another video similar to this that i think about a lot. it discussed the story of this frankenstein-esque woman who was brought back from the dead but with the mind of essentially a child (that sounds so mean oml) & how she is continuously taken advantage of by the men around her. it had a very powerful message while still adding the fun redrawing/redesigning aspect to it. i absolutely adore all the videos that are just about making fun designs based on different things, but these videos especially stick with me cuz i think they have a really good message, are worded so eloquently, & there’s so much passion behind them that it feels different than the average commentary video. (though i still also love the average commentary videos too.)
i feel like there’s a similar phenomenon in fandom spaces, where people will draw a character who isn’t hyper feminine or super curvaceous in canon as this super sexy hourglass figure.
i see so many female characters, especially in video games, where the main focus is their appearance, so it’s frustrating when a character who isn’t conventionally attractive or hyperfeminine is made to be super sexy & hyperfeminine by the fandom. like let me have this powerful androgynous female character damnit. >:(
sorry this is so long oml, i didn’t realize how much i had typed out, oopsies.
aw thank you so much!! I’m so happy the passion is coming across haha
Yeah, same here.
Like it feels like designing and writing female characters feels like a paradox.
People say they are against boring characters (or Mary Sues because misogyny) “we don’t want strong female characters we want complex characters that are female” they say. Then we give them a strong/complex female character and people will intentionally misrepresent that character and pretend they’re the most villainous character in the series whether they are complex and/or morally grey or they just made one mistake.
People say they hate gender roles, but then complain when character designers make female characters being masculine and say that it makes them “ugly”.
They say that not all female characters have to be tomboys to be strong and that they can be feminine and pretty too and yet they still complain by saying it’s hypocritical do I have physically strong female characters be girly either that or they see a hyperfeminine strong female that also isn’t a conventionally attractive, white (or light skinned and ambiguous because colorism and racism), cishet, able-bodied character and say the creators are going “too far” and still claim their masculine
And then they say that representation for different minorities doesn’t matter and that characterization/relatability does, hence the cycle repeats itself.
it’s tiring, I wanted to stop and just wish that people can just allow writers and artists to create female character the way they want without misogynistic backlash but time will tell I guess
EXACTLY. normalize androgynous designs, dammit. it's okay to have sexy characters but not _everything_ has to be sexualized! let casual characters exist!
yes to all of these, it’s very frustrating. :(
there’s such a variety of well written female characters out there that i think all have value, but people always find a way to be upset about some aspect of their design or character. like that trend of posts that say something to the effect of “people say they want complex female characters but they couldn’t handle __” (i.e. spindle or rose quartz from steven universe, mabel pines from gravity falls, & fire princess or bubblegum from adventure time are all ones that come to mind).
its frustrating cuz i love to see a variety of characters, i love analyzing their story & dialogues, & i think they all hold some value & purpose. but so many people get stuck on the surface level & either see them as too pretty or ugly, or they just dismiss their actions as annoying or evil. they refuse to see any level of nuance or they place more value in the appearance than literally any other detail about the character. ://
I hate that this is an actual thing in anime. It's hard nowadays to find something NOT sexualized.
Yeah it's a problem not just with Anime, just with media itself. The utilization of "$3× sells" has taken over and is getting out of hand as time goes on.
(I only censored the word so my comment doesn't get hidden or deleted by the bots)
No actually I feel like it is kinda easier that is probably because I have spent to much time looking at what is and isn't that type of 'fanservicy' like Houseki No Kuni which I should probably watch eventually
There's a ton of it, but it's not as mainstream. It just feels like there's a lot of fanservicy stuff because that's what's popular and what sells merch.
You might not be looking in the right places is what I'm hearing
Attack on Titan, Little Witch Academia, Houseki no Kuni, Zombieland Saga, HoriMiya, Spy x Family, Lycoris Recoil, Bocchi the Rock, Sousou no Frieren, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, and Dungeon Meshi are a few anime I can think of off the top of my head with minimal fanservice
Most of the takes here are so on point. I felt the case with Dan Da Dan was a little unfair. Dan Da Dan's "fan service" is quite plane and is given reason for it mostly. When it's creepy it is meant to be and never goes too far. ( I do love your care in research for the redesigns.)
I totally hear you! I do think I wouldn’t have been nearly as thrown off if I hadn’t read the manga first too, the anime is much more tasteful about it.
In that we agree 100% I read dress up darling before the anime released and it's.. much more upfront with it's 'psychical depictions'
Yeah. It’s the way the characters are portrayed. It’s less like they focus on their boobs and whatnot. Like, they’re not zooming into there.
The characters also talk like normal people while this is going on, they’re not moaning while being startled, or posing for the camera.
(I could still go without it though tbh.)
Honestly I don't think they potray the creepiness of the scene enough. Watching it felt disturbing as a girl but the scariness wasn't depicted strongly at all especially with the angles etc. The first episode had some jarring camera shots of this underage character which wasnt necessary especially when she is getting dressed in her room in one of the episodes. The manga is very bad at it but we can only hope the anime makes it less jarring but so far I'm not highly impressed as it only has been slimmed down a notch. I don't think any of these scenes are needed to potray her especially for the story later on. However I do blame the manga more as the anime is adapting it. I hate they chose to depict this with a 15 year old girl
Seeing that panty shot doesn't feel like it's meant to make you scared
Thank you for making this video. Right now there are so many videos and opinions raving about how dandandan is so great and so revolutionizing the shounen genre and female characters in the shounen genre. Because of those takes I started watching the show and I do like aspects of it, I like that momo IS cool, speaks her mind and has more personality than so many other female characters in shounen stories. Plus the animation and direction is really good (as expected from a science sari anime), but the show still didn't resonate with me as much as I hoped it would and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
And your Video made me more sure in that it was because the show still has so many issues so many popular animes have like fanservice in the character designs, in the the "camera work".
I don't hate dandandan and I found parts very enjoyable, I'm just tired of people constantly raving about an anime being so revolutionary and so new, while not touching upon the problems said story might still have while being better in other aspects. That both sides can exist, but maybe that lack of nuance is just a problem of the internet.
So thank you for being one of the creators touching upon the critical aspects of the show. Another one was Colleen's manga recs, she made a video about how dandandan is seen as so revolutionary while implementing aspects Shoujo manga habe had for centuries and that it's important to honor the creators in that genre as well.
Videos like yours and hers make me feel like there is a part in the anime and manga community that I feel welcome in.
And your design of Asako now made me think of how much cooler dandandan could be if the characters did their cool and epic shenanigans while being dressed more appropriate and practical thus Thier cool and funny personalities would be able to shine even more. Your design of Asako made me feel warm and in awe of this awesome baddass warm grandma who is very direct, but there when I need her, while to the original design I have more distance because it just doesn't make as much sense to me.
Correction: I ment to write Seiko not Asako lol
As a guy this is absolutely hilarious and honestly the over sexualization of women in anime ended up pushing me away from certain shows. Its the reason why my gf and I cant watch certain animes together. I just hate it when story is sacrificed for sex appeal.
with characters like kana people always defend it with "oh but shes not a human shes a dragon, shes actually like 100+ years old" yes but dragons having a longer lifespan means that they develop slower, she may be 100+ in human years but she acts like a child and is treated like a child even by the other dragons so clearly for her species she is quite young, therefore the argument of characters like this being older than they appear is actually a moot point since a lot of the time the place theyre at in their development/maturation does coincide with their loli appearance so sexualizing them is still Weird
yes!! i hate when people justify the sexualization of kid characters by saying, “oh they’re not a child, just a 10000+ year old that looks like one!” because its just annoying and dumb. regardless of age, if the character looks like a child, then its weird to sexualize the character
@@gnoot50 Yeah actually. It's like, seeing a human baby and a adult dogs age difference physically. Really weird comparison but basically if the baby is one and still not old enough, but the dog is, the "dog" shouldn't be s3xualizing the human baby because it is not mature by species standard.
It's funny this video popped up bc I was just thinking of making a webcomic where this boy and girl travel through different stories and get cool outfits but the fits get swapped accidentally and the guy gets the super revealing one to poke fun at the trope
♡ this video ty Lavendertowne :3
THATS AWESOME
MAKE IT!!! I'LL READ IT!!!
Do it
"a good writer does not insult his own characters" - some guy
what mean is a good writer never objectifies his characters, a good writer makes their values shine though their actions and their way of life never through a a bikini or sexy clothes.
but keep in mind sometime mainly an adaptations the direction forces the writer to have a "fanservervicegirl" just because it sells, that's pretty insulting, like what am i not good enough that you'd need sexy girls uh?
Im not even that mad about fanservece, but CHILDREN? It especially freaks me out since im a minor
Same, I am ok with fanservice (annoying but what can you do) but when it comes to kids being sexualized, it grosses me the F*&k out.
it's not even depicting that bad things can happen to children, it's just perverted
Superior and based takes. I appreciate the acknowledgements of these character designs, harmful fanservice, and the implications that are carried with them.
(some) guys when they s3xu4lize characters depicting young girls: 🥰🤭🤗
also them when girls s3xu4lize adult male characters: 😭😭😭
The hypocrisy is SO REAL
Fr. I heard about that happening within a community of mine. Female artists were getting doxxed due to drawing kinky art of a role reversal sitch. Not gonna go into detail as to what community it is, but yeah.
@roxassora2706 so real! my ex used to always talk about his favorite female characters in a bit of a weird way, but I didn't really care too much since I also got fictional crushes and didn't really care. but as soon as I mentioned I found one male character hot, he said I "ruined one of his favorite characters of all time"
@@melisam4612 Ugh. Like I can like Caleb Vatore, and my hypothetical bf can like The Hex Girls, but if he gets mad at me for that? That's on him.
Let's not forget
Those same men when lesbians are sexualized: ❤❤🤤🤤🤤🥰😍
Vs them when women ship male characters with other men:😡😡🤢🤮🤬
(I've seen some guys get upset about this with cod)
bell looks like he's in a bondage outfit rather than having an outfit swap, it's straight up fetishized for the female gaze
even as someone who's watching and really enjoying dandadan, you make a good point. I've been watching the anime, and while I can see what the scenes are doing in context of the story and in the context that it's anime- it still made me roll my eyes a little in the first episode. and I also like seiko's design in that it's a bit funny and quirky- but still with the caveat that it means someone didn't want to represent an older looking badass lady. I keep seeing people joke about "I'm not usually into old ladies but granny seiko can get it"....she looks 25!!
your design for seiko is so cool looking!!! I really loved the touch of adding the lucky charm, I feel like it adds a lot and is just a super cool detail 😵💫 and when you have the 2 designs side by side... it does really put it into perspective.
also yeah, I've only been reading a little of the manga [not reading ahead] and yeah those panels are pretty... ehhhh. I've been absolutely loving the show and the story and the characters, and I don't think it ruins it for me. but it's a thing in anime that, at least for me, I have to compartmentalise it and put it in a box and set it aside, so I can enjoy the story. kind of like what you're saying, being desensitised to it.
Yeah which is so annoying, because I love dandandan cause the story is so interesting and funny. I just hate what they did repping an old lady who looks no older than 25 and Momo being sexualized and almost SA’ed. They know how to treat women with respect like they showed with the Mommy monster but they still choose to make fan service of a little girl.
Yeah I totally agree. I love Dandadan but those manga panels were kinda crazy. Glad they didn't put it into the anime. Granted, I didn't view Momo in the alien scene as fan service because it was related to what was happening, which was scary. And she seemed to be drawn not super exaggerated either, but then again I'm probably desensitized.
@@dendriticdruid6218 Dandadan never feels like fanservice in the manga, and barely in the anime. Seiko just existing and the few times the characters are naked or in their underwear. The way nudity is used in Dandadan it's either for comedy or a couple scenes when they are threatened. Spongebob uses nudity the exact same way, no one would ever call SpongeBob fanservice though.
@@littleboulder8125Agree, i dont get why people call it a "fetish" scene. I mean were talking about Dandadan here, you know the show about a guy finind HIS BALLS + every thing in this show is just freaky in general, OKARUN LITERALLY BITES TURBO GRANNY TITS AT ONE SCENE.

The worst part is that Hestia is one of the very few greek godesses that had sworn of marrige/sexual stuff- something along the lines of that
1:26 From a writing perspective fanservice is fine. The problem is when it becomes a replacement for characterization with feminine characters. The example of character's whose sadness is treated as a joke because of fanservice is an example of what happens when the writer can't be bothered with a character, so he just objectifies them instead of humanizing them.
Agreed though my biggest problem with fanservice is when it's used for underage characters as a way to normalize their sexualization. It's disturbing.
@monbub Yeah. At this point I won't watch any anime with children in it unless it comes from Studio Gibli. No matter how invested I am, one bad scene will kill my interest.
It's not just a separate thing that people try to use as a replacement for actual substance, it actively gets in the way of actual substance. The character being sad about something *would* already be good characterization (at least if the emotion fits the character), but it doesn't work anymore when the scene plays it as a joke and points a camera at her boobs.
Any immersion or empathy for the character that would have previously existed are just completely destroyed.
@kappasphere I don't agree. A character being sad isn't going to cause empathy in itself. You have to set the expectations for how that character should be viewed and treated first.
Imagine a movie that starts with someone bawling their eyes out with no context.
Great points. And from a marketing perspective, I think fan service that lacks substance in its writing is still okay. I can generally tell from the title and cover art what I’m getting into, but the first chapter will generally set up enough expectations for tone. It might be trash but I don’t always want fine dining, sometimes I want junk food. So if it hits the target audience by making good on the promise it sets up, then I think the content itself more of a “to each their own” kinda thing. The only exception that comes to mind is outright sexualization of minors. If someone’s got a craving for that content they ought to seek a therapist and talk about what’s going on there :(
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS. I've pretty much just stopped watching anime because the fanservice is often constant and awful. I'm excited to try some of these recommendations now! (Love Nichijou so good)
I actually loved your Seiko redesign! Aaaa I wish Seiko is like that canonically hahahah.
I love reading Dandadan because although I’m not denying it’s definitely still fanservice-y, the author didn’t draw the characters’ *certain features* too exaggerated-ly, and like, the fanservice scenes still blends well into the action and doesn’t look forced.
But yeah I agree, though, the multiple fanservice shots and hot grandma could be approached differently
Dandadan definitely has some fanservice-y feeling stuff in there, but I think what brings it back for me is that our protag is not immune to being "fanserviced". If you want to have a h0rny anime with lots of boob and butt shots, at least make it fair and give the male characters the same treatment.
@@ptipi4125 I still wouldn't call horny something like Dandadan tho 💀
@@ptipi4125 yea he gets butt ass naked in a bunch of chapters LMAOO hes not safe either so idm dandadan much, idk why people act like dandadan is even close to being filled with only gross fanservice when 70 percent of anime are way worse especially stuff from the 2000s.. like its fr not that bad idk why people are acting like its highschool dxd level😭
Thank you for your service. I like that you explain to people who might not know that not liking fanservice isn't about not liking sexuality
I love how you didn’t reduce the chest size, while a lot of these character designs are unrealistic and harmful some people do actually have big breasts and having a big chest doesn’t mean you give permission to be sexualized.
100%!! I have a bigger and hate that people seem to equate that with either being more sexually appealing or as permission to be weird. It’s nice to see bigger breasts =\= sexualized lol
Intro was basically normie vs cultured
exactly
Some of these manga artists need to be investigated bc why do they have to put the nine year olds in weird sexual situations like that?? So unnecessary 😭
fr. it's so unnecessary and isn't warranted
Your Kana design is so cute! The simpler clothes actually really work because obviously a child probably wouldn’t like having to wear things like that
i especially HATE fanservice in shonen (which is wierdly mostly where its found). especially bc of the point mentioned here: 11:57 and like. shonen is a demographic aimed towards young/teenage boys. is this what we want to teach them? how do you think this will affect the way they view women in real life? and don't come at me with the "oh but its fiction!!!! its not real they know thats not what you should do" card when we are talking about TEENAGERS. no, they don't know any better. you might, but ur not the target demographic anyways! if we just google the meaning of shonen, oxford dictionary states: "a genre of Japanese comics and animated films aimed primarily at a young male audience, typically characterized by action-filled plots." Are we really okay with showing sexualized material, especially material that creates moral ambiguity in scenes where characters are vulnerable, to children? do we really think they can discern between good/bad at those ages? why are we so alright with teaching young boys that its okay to objectify women at all times?
I feel like you’re sorely underestimating a young person’s ability to differentiate reality from fiction.
I LOVE your redesign of granny dude! I wanna see more old ladies in anime!
