Aaron Conners, the co-designer of this game, said in an interview with the Adventure-Treff website: "One of the best memories was getting James Earl Jones to do the voice of the 'Great P.I. in the Sky'. After I wrote the part, we were all sitting around talking about who we should get to do the voice and someone suggested James Earl Jones. After we all stopped laughing, I said, 'Well, it wouldn’t hurt to ask.' We contacted his agent and, it turned out, Mr. Jones’ son knew all about UKM being in development and was totally pumped about his dad doing a cameo in it. So we got this A-list talent to be in our game for scale (actors’ minimum) wages."
That must have been so mind blowing for them. It's funny. A lot of people think famous actors are these unreachable people, but at the end of the day they're just working artists. If you have a legitimate job offer, they're going to at least consider it.
I got to play a little bit of a new remake of Tex Murphy Overseer called The Poisoned Pawn. I think you should check it out. You'll really get a kick out of what these folks are making! :)
I haven't played Martian Memorandum, I should probably remedy that. I gave up on Mean Streets (those flying car sequences drove me off), but I think MM is more of a traditional adventure game. I'd also like to get a hold of the boxes for Pandora Directive and Overseer. I loved that little LED on the Overseer box.
PLayed whole series 3-4 years ago, and then Tesla Effect. I think Mean Streets better than Martiam Memorandum. Streets has interesting gameplay idea with collecting clue-words and with whom you must speak them and where to go and that's the only game where I felt like real private detective, with real life notebook, where I wrote all key-words, names, coordinates and such, and there is no other game like that. Hovercar was tedious, but at least you can just push coordinates and let autopilot do the job. Memorandum on another hand... Yeah, it's classic adventure. But there too many ways to die, and if you forgot to take something in first half of the game you die in second half. And there is too many cases of moon logic (mars logic?) in puzzles, while Mean Streets and Under a Killing Moon could be completed without walkthrough.
I wish you could find the boxes its really difficult. Mean Streets is tough at first but, once you figure out what you need to do it gets better. Hard to replay because being spoiled by great graphics today.
I just found your channel recently and I've been loving your videos and I didn't know you covered this one. This is one of my faves from my childhood. The whole Tex Murphy series is so good. I picked up a copy of Mean Streets back around '92 or '93 from the discount bin at Software Etc., and my proclivity for Film Noir had me hooked immediately.
Ray Ceeya nice I wanted those games back in 1993 I was 9 at a department store 15 mins from my house at the time I live in seekonk Massachusetts now use to live in Swansea in case you wanted to know😊
@@only257 I think they're all available on GOG and Steam. My advice is to skip the first one though and go straight to Overlord. It tells the same story as Mean Streets It's basically a remake. Same story (told in flashback) but with a vastly improved interface. Looking back that first game was pretty rough.
Tex's lady friend Chelsee is a fan favorite and is in every Tex Murphy FMV game. But boy, she must be the most loved game character that has the least amount of screen time. In the first game, she is confined to a newsstand and only appears early in the game. In the 2nd game, she is not in the story at all and disappears mid-game. The 3rd game, Overseer, she is only a spectator in the linking FMV scenes. In the 4th game, Tesla Effect, you don't even see her if you pick certain paths in the game. It is credit to actress Suzanne Barnes that her character resonates with us even with limited screen time. She has to make us believe that she is the love of Tex's life.
Thanks for your kind words. I'm going in this next week to spend a day recording with Tex on a new 6-Part Radio Theatre from the Pandora Directive as Chelsee. Hope you check it out when it's released.❣
@@pearldrops1975 Thank you for the reply! Good actors ALWAYS make it work. I think you out-acted Margot Kidder and Brian Keith, among others. I'll certainly look forward to the radio drama, and good luck to you in all your endeavors!
Awesome channel! Subbed. Huge Tex Murphy fan. Now in the middle of Tesla Effect but thinking I should revisit the older ones as I got the bundle somehow on Steam.
At last, great video, i'm a big fan of Tex Murphy videogames since mean streets and you're right, the clue system is brillant because you can finish the game whithout take a look to a solution + the background, the game is really enjoyable to play until the end.
Had to watch this after i saw the Pandora Directive video! Very creative and entertaining Fmv games, I had never even heard of them before! Thanks for showcasing them Pam.
Cool to see Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) featuring as the bar tender! These 90's PC games had a real charm - I wish I had played more of them like this one, but unfortunately my experience didn't go much beyond Dark Forces and Duke Nukem 3D :(. Cool review Pam. Video quality seems improved too.
One of my first games with “Real Sound” was Mean Streets. Then I got a demo of under a killing moon and thought it was awesome. Every time a new game came out in the series I had to purchase it. I miss big box physical media. This series has always been one of my beloved series of games. With a lot of them still alive, we need a movie of this series.
Thanks! James Earl Jones makes the opening to this game pack such a punch. I often find myself getting game overs just so I can hear more of his dialogue.
I had this one on my Pentium 90 with a 813MB hard drive and 16MB of ram. It was pretty epic for its time, but I went back and played again decades later and it was still a great game.
I remember getting this game when it first came out. It was the first CD Rom PC game that I beat. Loved it. I need to replay it one of these days, plus it'd be nice to see it with higher textures as at the time, I only had 4MB of ram in my PC and had to use the low settings.
I got a free demo of it, and liked the demo. I bought it on CD, along with the rest of the series. Had to use a boot disk to free up as much RAM as possible to play, otherwise it would crash
I mean, it's not 2042 yet, but here in Japan we still use fax machines in 2020, so... (and I still don't get why! It's nowhere near as convenient as scanning and emailing!). Please don't be pissed!
Awesome Pam thank you for reviewing another FMV! :D I actually just played this for the first time over the holidays and it was a blast, really entertaining and addictive (never get tired of that new chapter theme!) I spent the whole game wondering when Rita was going to show up at the meter, didn't realize it was a pop culture reference XD It's from the Beatles song Lovely Rita?
I remember the disc swapping was a kind of a pain in the ass. Glad the whole series is available for download now, eliminating the need for CD's. Love this series.
Disc swapping was the worst! Four discs was bad. Six discs in the next game was even worse, and my discs had a habit of failing - Access sent me so many replacements.
LOL, I did sometimes remember scenes of the game. But never remembered the exact name until today, when on radio they played a song with the name «Under a Killing Moon». Thank you for the review. It was fun then and perhaps I will give it a try again.
I originally had the demo of this many years ago, always annoyed when i hit the basketball court, it would time out and show screenshots!. 15 years later, i finally own it :D. Will be playing this shortly once again. One of my favourite in the Tex Murphy series. I've not played the others or the new one, but will do shortly.

Would love to see it! Are you also looking forward to the Poisoned Pawn? Never really liked Overseer (Played the game back in 98) so unsure what to expect.
I watched Game Informer play a full play through of this recently. It is so dated but in a good way. I really thought FMV was the future back in the 90s, probably best that i was wrong.
I watched a bit of the GI playthrough, but decided I'd rather just play it again myself. FMV is making a tiny comeback, a number of indie games have used it in the past year or two.
Awesome review, Pam. Can't say I've played Under A Killing Moon (heard of it, wanna try it) but I played another Access adventure game which I think is pretty cool; Countdown. May wanna check it out. :) -Mad Wolf
Great review. I am a fan of FMV games, i got this One from GOG, but did not played yet. Will give it a try. That was one of my first bought pc games in 94 if not the first. Loved it to death. I bought the sequel pandora directive, more advanced technically but i prefered the first one
i remember adding 8mb of memory to get a total of 16 just for this game, costed me 90 dollars back in the day and the seller told me he didn`t understand why anyone should need 16mb. how times have changed.
Under a Killing Moon is a bit cheesier in some ways than the later Tex games, but charming still. Have you played Pandora Directive, Overseer, or the new Tesla Effect one? Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the later ones.
As much as I like this game, and I really do like it, I personally thought it became a bit too goofy at points, with the sequel, Pandora Directive, being more consistent and striking a better balance between goofy & serious.

Ahhh, ok. And yes - Spycraft is something of a classic. Might see if I can find it, actually - was reasonably good fun. Under a Killing Moon looks fun too. :)
Pam, you buying a Switch?? I am! Just pre-ordered the over priced 'Pro Controller'. Kinda sucks that it cost more than a second game. Would have got the new Bomber Man, but I don't know how gimmicky the Joy-Con controllers may be. Don't want to ruin Zelda. Why is Link right handed again though??!
And i want to see a scanner darkly version of this Or man in the high castle of full movition video game now Or total recall or miniorty report or next or paycheck
One shortcoming of these old FMV games is that they must have stationary camera shots: no panning, no tracking, no movement at all. That hindered the already limited film-making potential of the genre. The sequel to this, "The Pandora Directive," is much better and is believed to be the best in the series, mainly because it had a much better director, Adrian Carr, which was able to make the most of the limitations. His FMVs are better-acted and shot, and overall more enjoyable to watch. Carr went on to direct two more Tex Murphy sequels, Overseer (1998) and Tesla Effect (2014).
Aaron Conners, the co-designer of this game, said in an interview with the Adventure-Treff website: "One of the best memories was getting James Earl Jones to do the voice of the 'Great P.I. in the Sky'. I’ve played 3 or 4 of the Sherlock games. My favourite is Crimes and Punishments.
I really need to play this now. Damn you. Damn you to hell! :P Haha but seriously awesome review. I will need to really try this out though. :D
Hope you enjoy it!
Would you say that Spycraft: The Great Game on the PC qualifies as an FMV? Also, the guy at the beginning sounds like Smithers from The Simpsons. :)
I haven't played that (though looking at it, it looks kinda awesome), but I'd call it an FMV. I'm pretty sure the guy in the beginning is Chris Jones.
Ahhh, ok. And yes - Spycraft is something of a classic. Might see if I can find it, actually - was reasonably good fun. Under a Killing Moon looks fun too. :)
Played this pc game in 1995 I was 11 at the time fun game 😉
Note to self: Need Under a killing Moon and The Sexy Brutale OST
Pam, you buying a Switch?? I am! Just pre-ordered the over priced 'Pro Controller'. Kinda sucks that it cost more than a second game. Would have got the new Bomber Man, but I don't know how gimmicky the Joy-Con controllers may be. Don't want to ruin Zelda.
Why is Link right handed again though??!
I wouldn't be getting one, by my bf already has it pre-ordered. I'm not really into Zelda, but I'll probably try Bomberman.
Nice review! Man Margot Kidder had really let herself go at that point I guess
Thanks!

The inside of the store at 4:10 woow
Yeah, that's not a place you can explore, and it sits behind a loading screen. So it's just a flat image.
Have you ever played The Harvester?
What's the chronological order of all the Tex Murphy games?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tex_Murphy
This game is what blade runner meet maltase falcon
And i want to see a scanner darkly version of this
Or man in the high castle of full movition video game now
Or total recall or miniorty report or next or paycheck
Fmv was the best, are there any other games like this out there that even come close?
One shortcoming of these old FMV games is that they must have stationary camera shots: no panning, no tracking, no movement at all. That hindered the already limited film-making potential of the genre. The sequel to this, "The Pandora Directive," is much better and is believed to be the best in the series, mainly because it had a much better director, Adrian Carr, which was able to make the most of the limitations. His FMVs are better-acted and shot, and overall more enjoyable to watch. Carr went on to direct two more Tex Murphy sequels, Overseer (1998) and Tesla Effect (2014).

One of my favorite games. Pandora Directive is also great.
I'm working on a video on that right now.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Awesome, looking foward to it! You're content is the best. Should you give Nilo his wallet though? He's such a scumbag
liked it, but oh the cd swapping so much swapping.
It did seem like a lot... until Pandora Directive with its 6 discs.
Cannot be Tamed agreed that was the only flaw with it📼
I want the man in the high castle version of this
Hahaha the guy in the dumpster is a vibe. Only replace choco syrup with opiates
I will be pissed too if fax machines still exist in the year 2042.. Unfortunately, that could be the case.. 😢
Or any other Philip k Dick story as fmv games
Lest we forget the era of Eugenics.
like echo and those bunny men lol
16 MB? In 1994? Yeah maybe when I win the lottery.
Yeah, on the back of the card, there's even a breakdown of how much RAM costs.
I did my first computer build in 1995, and pretty sure I paid about $105 for a 4 MB stick of RAM
I remember upgrading to 8mb just to play Dark Forces in 1995.
I hope they put in that Echo and the Bunnymen song in the game. Otherwise they totally fucked up.
If we're still using fax machines in 2042 I'm gonna be pissed! 😄
Lol. The one good FMV game in the world, and it's _not_ related to Sega CD! Coincidence?? My fav system just can't catch a break!
There’s more than one
Has a certain campy charm to it I guess. No way I could play through it though.
Thanks CBT.
No problem!
