- 1968 - Shirley Bassey recorded this song, Why Can't I Cry' in 1968, but this track was not made public until recently. This song was most likely recorded for either Shirley's 1968 LP, 'This Is My Life, OR, '12 of those Songs'. An artist usually will record more songs that can be included on an album, but it's great that some of these previously unreleased recordings like this song are now coming to light. This dramatic song was made for Shirley's dramatic high fidelity vocals, and so it's hard to believe that it was not included on one of the above LPs. However, Shirley's good friend, Tom Jones, did record and release this song in 1968. This song fits both these recording artists from Wales, UK.

A very good rendition of a very powerful Ballard indeed.
However this is not the best version of this song.
The ULTIMATE VERSION belongs to the Greatest Female Vocalist Of ALL TIME who's rendition is perfect.
PETULA CLARK.
Her version is extremely commanding and EXQUISITELY crafted with perfessionalism and just the right amount of remorse over a "great love lost."
Tom Jones also as recorded a very good version indeed of this.
However it is Petula's all the way for me by at least the length of a full Marathon.
