They lost 3-0, and in the last minutes of the match Mwepu Ilunga came out of the barrier on the occasion of a free kick and kicked the ball away. He received a yellow card and was laughed at.
Years later he revealed the truth behind that gesture, which probably saved his and his teammates' lives.
Ilunga passed away in 2015 after a long illness 🌹
Mwepu re-enacted this moment for Baddiel and Skinner. Extremely funny but yes the real story was scarey.

why were they one of the top teams in Europe? They drew with Scotland and Brazil and got knocked out with no points in the next phase!! They didn't qualify for the 1970 or 1978 World Cup, Poland on the other hand were a much better team.

The Referee of this match was Omar Delgado from Colombia and the Zairean coach was Macedonian born Blagojev Vidinic (GK of Yugoslavia in World Cup 1962). Vidinic also coached Morocco in the World Cup of 1970. In 1976 Vidinic became the coach of the Colombian National team and he failed to qualify Colombia to the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Blagojev Vidinic died in Strasbourg (France) in 2006

I remember this game. The TV camera panned to the Zaire bench when it was either 8-0 or 9-0. Their players were completely devastated. It was actually upsetting to see.

The whole team was on a strike . FIFA never gave them their trophy money ,as they had been previously African champions twice ,winning the African cup. That is why in that match ,the keeper and defense would just let the ball in ... Later after 2010 ,FIFA recognised them ,paying them 500 USD a month ,but they were erlrady aging

That defies logic - Scotland couldn't get past the first round so would not have done very well in the second round! A dull team.
As for the last comment, utter nonsense. Scotland a dull team?? Outplayed bother Brazil and yugoslavia over the 90 minutes of both games. Unfortunately played Zaire first and didn't score enough goals. Players like Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law in the squad and you call us dull. Disrespectful and totally untrue.
As for Zaire,, both their goalkeepers were dreadful. Yes some good safes because of their natural athleticism but some absolutely howling mistakes. Zaires defence was naive at best. Going forward they created chances in every game they played but didn't convert any. Significantly scotland goalkeeper David Harvey was in the ITV World cup 74 panels first team of the tournament after his performance against Zaire though we should still have won by more after hitting the woodwork several times. Let's not be too hard on Zaire, they were the flag bearers for africa, predecessors of all the great teams from that continent to follow in subsequent world cups. 🏴🏴

So in 90 minutes Scotland score 2 and Brazil 3 against Zaire but Yugoslavia score 6 in 35 minutes and finish off scoring 9 and low and behold Zaire have a Yugoslavian coach. Why was the keeper taken off during the 1st half? He looked fit was playing well, why was the Zaire player sent off in the first half? didn't any bad tackle (he got a straight red). Yugoslavia played well but Zaire were not that bad. I read that the players were supposed to have downed tools due to no bonus payment forthcoming for qualification but I thought for years this game really stunk of something really bad. Who knows...

Before the game, the Zaire players pay & provident fund was stolen and siphoned off by corrupt sports officials within the Mobutu regime, so they basically didn't get paid throughout the tournament.
And considering that they were all from their domestic leagues, they weren't getting paid much at all.
They were going to forfeit the match, but played under protest & they gave a "whatever" effort against Yugoslavia, after putting in a fine performance against Scotland in their group opener.

Why was the Zaire player sent off? Zaire could have got a couple of goals. That would have been really cool.
He was sent off wrongly. Another Zaire player kicked the ref(!) in the back, the ref turned around and pointed to the wrong guy.
If you're calling yourself gunternetzer then I'm assuming you're German. Well I can tell you Germany were delighted to avoid scotland in the later stages of that tournament. They were lucky to get past us in qualifying for the 1970 tournament. Just the same as bayern Munich were delighted to play the cheats of atletico Madrid in the 1974 European Cup final instead of celtic who would have beaten them.
Getting back to WM74, Scotland had so much talent at their disposal that Ormond was spoilt for choice. I agree we should have beaten Zaire by more but the 9-0 score they were beaten by yugoslavia reeks of corruption. Especially when you see how scotland were way better than yugoslavia when they went head to head. And the coach of Zaire was.... Yugoslavian🤔Same with Brazil. We were better than them too.
The Fifa scandals that have been revealed in recent years (Joao Havelange etc) would demonstrate that there is no agenda on my part. Fifa certainly have an agenda though and it appears to be anti Scotland (the other home nations would probably say anti home nations) I have nothing against Germany in fact I speak good German and always look out for them at the major tournaments. In fact, my friend and I are off to the Euros this summer and who do we play? Germany of course! Can't wait. 🏴🇩🇪
You can't keep blaming bad luck. Scotland could never have made the contribution Germany did to the 1970 World Cup and were an average team in 1974 otherwise they would have qualified for the second round - read the official FIFA report. Bayern were much better than Celtic as well. No I'm not German - my mother was from Dundee but I try to be objective.
