The panelists got it right, but I think the broader signal is that content moderation will bow to local political pressure. The era of one global set of content moderation principles might just come to an end. Modi would want Meta kowtowing too. Despite Zuckerberg's claim to "work with Trump to push back against foreign governments' asks to censor more", most of the policy changes make no sense outside of US politics. - The "dropping fact-checkers" change is specific to US. Does Meta think folks in India deserve less freedom of expression? - They also talk about "restrictions that are out of touch with _mainstream discourse_". Mainstream discourse, as seen in which part of the world? - California vs. Texas contrast also makes no sense outside of the US politics context.
I appreciate all the thoughtfulness of the contributors on this panel - and especially pulled together in such a short period. If this topic is revisited I’d really like to see a contributor who thinks this particular “event” is actually a 0-2 level of “threat.” Note - I am not a right winger. But the de facto conclusion of the panel is 100% that this is bowing to Trump, etc. I’d just like someone to forward the argument that it wasn’t, or that it’s not actually so dangerous for the world. Repeating - I’m not right wing, but I’d like to hear that take presented. Always enjoy the discussion on UA-cam and the many podcasts this organization puts out - thanks for your work!
I would hope that at some point people would begin to leave the platform that does not meet there moral sensibilities. I mean we don't have to stand there and be abused. We have to be willing to suffer discomfort to ensure the world does not lock stock and barrel accept authoritarianism. I wonder when they begin to control content to make their ideology.
most users are absolutely clueless about the machinations of these things, both technically and politically. many people have good hearts, good intentions, but they don't grasp how one thing is connected to another.
Lawfare really deserves more traffic, another excellent panel and discussion.
