  • What makes a film without a single scare, scary? Why is Bong Joon-ho's 2003 crime thriller, Memories of Murder so dark and gloomy, despite its plentiful comedic reliefs and lack of violence?
The secret is in its 'colours', or more precisely, the colours that are hidden in plain sight. Let's explore how Bong Joon-ho approaches visual storytelling, and what we can learn from his techniques.
Warning: take everything with a grain of salt - lots of fun speculations intended as a means to explore, dissect, and analyze the tricks.
Especially for this video, if you'd like my in-depth take on the film, my reasoning behind the argument, and how I came to different conclusions - i.e. no omission, full discussion - become a patron on my patreon page and listen to my monthly podcast, where I dissect my latest video in detail from creation to completion.

Watch Memories of Murder and other great films for free at MUBI.com/spikimamovies - and with that, what's better? Parasite or Memories of Murder?
EDIT: Since many seem to ask, the 'right' VS 'righteous' actually DOES work in Korean; it's actually the other way around, that it just happens to work in English as well in a similar way with the word 'righteous'. I totally forgot to mention that in my video so I'm clarifying that here! (I'm also completely fluent in Korean, in case you're wondering)

It is my personal belief that Bong Joon-ho won several Oscars not just for Parasite but rather it was an amalgamation for all the masterpieces he created up to Parasite. With that being said both films are better than the other. Btw, I'm looking forward to your big screen debut and watching someone else do a video praising your decisions.

A scene that always stuck with me is the ending when the kid told the detective the killer just looks like an average korean and the detective stared directly at the camera, at the audience, implying that 1. anyone you know or around you could be the/a killer, 2. the film breaks the fourth wall by directly acknowledging that the killer himself is probably watching.

FYI. After about three decades from initial murder in Hwaseong , korean police finally caught the killer whose name is Lee Chun Jae(이춘재). Director Bong Jun Ho said that it felt so strange and complicated to see a real life killer. He wanted to meet the killer whem shooting the movie if he had a chance, but in 2020 when the real killer was caught, director Bong said he would not like to meet the killer.

I don't think this is entirely accurate. I believe when the film was released, the killer was already caught but for another crime (family-related). So, unless he was able to watch the film in prison, I don't think he has seen the film at all. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

wasn't it more like the director kind of thought or knew that when the movie is released, the real serial killer would be watching, so he made the ending scene like that. so that the serial killer will be looking straight into the eyes of the detective if ever he'll be watching.

I first watched this on July 2nd, 2020. I remember it so clearly because when I finished it, I was curious and looked up the case, and was instantly overwhelmed. During the exact two hours I was watching it, was when the real-life killer was identified and confirmed as the culprit, including some cases they had no idea about.
The film was a really thrilling, interesting watch, but it was still so far away, the string of violence happening before I was even born. Then, all of a sudden, it felt like it might as well have been happening next-door.
It being announced at the moment I was watching this horrible investigation, gave me that really heavy dread kind of fear... the timing was absolutely freaky, it left me unnerved for a week

Memories of Murder is based on a harrowing series of real life crimes that have spanned for years or decades. The visuals of this film are otherworldly. You can clearly see how eerie and hopeless the characters look. They’re trapped in an endless cycle of events that will continue to haunt them for a long time. South Korea may seem like a utopia to some, but in reality, it’s just like any other country out there in the world that continues to suffer the consequences as a result of other peoples’ actions. Great analysis as always.

i had just watched for the first time today so good coincidence i found this video. i like these interpretations of the colors. the desaturation also makes it feel more like a memory in dooman’s mind and the yellow paddy fields probably feel more vivid to him bc of the innocence esp as it’s the start of the crazy case he goes thru and the erosion of hope and his ideals and perception of himself.
i also think blue and red and yellow are frequently used by bong joon ho in this movie and others of his work bc of their significance in korean esp with the tricolored taegeuk which features red, blue and yellow representing heaven, earth and humanity.

i have just realized i enjoy commentaries more than the actual film. (i'm obsessed with finding meaning.) anyway--filmmaking is the greatest form of storytelling and bong joon-ho is a genius. spikima, you're a genius as well.

after watching this movie, i dreamed the whole night of the detectives trying to catch the killer and failling over and over, i didnt sleep weel and i woke up in the morning in an anxiety state, my stomach hurt the entire day because of anxiety, in fact i went to the hospital but all was fine. the creator said this film is about the people involved in the crime, who suffer from these crimes and not about the killer itself. u can really feel the frustration that the detectives feel and later the despair. and man your videos are simply beautiful as good as the films you review

This is one of the many movies that I couldn't conjure up courage to watch had it not been for my translation professor. Aside from all the victims and their families, what adds to tragedy is the number of lives of innocent suspects who all suffered till their deaths or died from torture.

Definitely made me remember Zodiac of Fincher, the constructing ambiguity that develops with each new suspect and the character's growing in their own ways for example the lead detective was bumbling and by the end his character was serious and stern, wondering about who it could've been, the detective from Seoul was the type of guy who always trusted documents, except for when in the end the ball wasn't in his court. They all grew in depths of each's character and became the opposite of who they were in the end. I also felt like the last 5 minutes of this movie was perfect Storytelling , just like the last 3 minutes of Prisoners by Villeneuve, it felt captivating even though not many words were said. The more I think about how the story developed in Zodiac the more I can feel the similarity between the two awesome movies. How the characters were accusing every suspect and how badly they wanted the guilty, Fincher had the Zodiac Killer, Bong has the Rain Man, Fincher had Mark, RDJ and Gyllenhaal, Bong had the Dropkicker, Detective Park and The smoker guy. They both had their one last suspect that one of the detectives knew was the killed but couldn't prove it and went crazy. And the most similar thing between the two Top Tier Mystery Thrillers : "I'll know who the killer is by looking him in the eye." Literally both movies even had almost the same dialogue and the same style of throwing suspicions. Gyllenhaal even looked at the bald guy in the end of Zodiac as if he had found his killer. Now that's a brilliant way of character intro and the acting by the characters in this film just made it exponentially better.
Now, lemme make this clear, from the starting of this thing I was very intrigued by the acting by the actors and the music scores as well. Bong joon did an amazing job choosing the music scores and thriller sounds to drop in middle, it made the scene so much more intense, I'm afraid Bong has definitely learnt from his mentor in how to make a scene suspenseful. No name needed.
The long takes of cinematography were equally melancholic, as well as they were strikingly photographed depicting how far we are from the conclusion and how every thing looks different from a different perspective. Direction of the movie was also seemingly well done and it's no joke why Bong Joon Ho is one of the best directors of our generation.
Again, I'd like to appreciate the acting a lot more because what they have pulled with this is a fine piece of art. From the start it was funny as hell , those out of the blue drop kicks just had me rolling. And by the end how the characters molded into a more saddened and angered version of themselves was quite the change. It felt strong, it felt changing, but what didn't change is that the monster was still out there hunting, that felt unchanged.
    8.5/10

Reminded me off zodiac too.. prisoners not so much .. because she was caught and whole mystery was infront of us.. the last look in the shop of zodiac and the last look here .. helpless feeling that you just can't do anything.

@@suryansh8069 I noted the similar thing between Prisoners and Zodiac and it wasn't the fact the the killer is caught or anything. If you have seen Prisoners you'd know what I'm talking about when saying the last 3 minutes of the movie was perfect storytelling. That scene has a deeper meaning than most are able to interpret. That's the similar thing between these two films.

This was an awesome movie that while not your typical movie to watch with family, was one that my parents and brothers and i will never forget watching together
My favorite part of this film is the soundtrack, God is it good, it just emphasizes the tragedy of the story and how sometimes you just cant catch the killer, and justice wont always be brought upon the criminal.
One of the best parts, the ending with the detective staring at the camera, the audience, has imo one of the best pieces of original soundtrack in any film.

I have watched this movie long ago, but with ur speculations this makes the movie already go from my ultra favourite to top. We dismiss the effects of colour so much when watching film, and I think that's what is truly the most interesting in the end. The ability of the director to combine the essence of the story with the symbolism of the overlooked colours is what true film watchers see.

watching the movie i knew the drastic desaturation had to have had some kind of thematic meaning behind it besides just "oooo gloomy scary murder bleh" but man. Bong Joon-ho being so in touch with visual storying in his first major film is insane.
i happen to have watched this on the criterion blu-ray edition and it includes his final student short film as an extra. and to see the jump from that to Memories of Murder is insane. and yeah i'm sure he worked on other stuff between the two projects but mannnnnnn.
crazy good stuff. beautiful and haunting movie.
