In regards the state of the USSR at the time it broke up, it is important to remember that it was weakened in large part by the success of the US policy of driving the Soviets to economic failure via an unsustainable arms race. This arms race, and it goal, were explicitly stated in a National Defence document of the 1950s, and would have been even more damaging to the USSR after the recent catastrophic devastation of WWII. The Soviet Union did not collapse/fail solely because of the inherent failure of the socialist/communist system as we in the West have been so heavily propagandized about.

He needed billions of investment from the West to see through his reforms. He was led to believe that the US was on board by Kohl. One question for Scott. The US and Israel have wanted to destroy Iran for a long time. They are getting close to that goal. How does Iran survive without acquiring nuclear weapons? In regards the state of the USSR at the time it broke up, it is important to remember that it was weakened in large part by the success of the US policy of driving the Soviets to economic failure via an unsustainable arms race. This arms race, and it goal, were explicitly stated in a National Defence document of the 1950s, and would have been even more damaging to the USSR after the recent catastrophic devastation of WWII. The Soviet Union did not collapse/fail solely because of the inherent failure of the socialist/communist system as we in the West have been so heavily propagandized about.

If Iran were half-way around the planet Israel wouldn't care about Iranian nukes. If fact, Israel was quite OK with aremde-to-the-teeth Iran having nukes under the US pupet Shah, right. And now you mention that maybe there is room to then (after a nuclear agreement) push Iran to accept scaling back its missile stocks/programs as well, rendering them essentially defenceless as Israel clearly wants. You've also used the term "moderate" to describe the new Iranian government. Don't you realize that "moderate" is what those who accept US/Western tutelage and domination are called, and always (and only) juxtaposed with the term "radical", cause for America everything is black vs white, good guys vs bad guys.
It is difficult to imagine that after its 45 year struggle to rebuild itself (with serious external pressures working to prevent it), Iran would now accept to lay prostrate in front of the country which has sought its outright debasement destruction for so long. You also seem to think that an Iran without nukes is a good thing...a World without nukes is a good thing, yes, and that includes an Israel without nukes (and ballistic missiles). Why would Iran accept an aggressive, devious and murderous neighbor with nuclear arms and give up one of the only means (MAD) of countering the neighborhood madman?

Scott’s version of what happened to the Soviet Union is not correct. Gorbachev thought that a democratised Soviet Union would be welcomed into the Western fold. He needed billions of investment from the West to see through his reforms. He was led to believe that the US was on board by Kohl. But the US saw it all as a way to weaken and destroy the Soviet Union. I think Gorbachev realised decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union that the West was a false friend.

I have to disagree with Scott on the notion that Gorbachev was a revolutionary and that the USSR collapsed because of some kind of internal failures ... while it's true they had internal failures, this isn't why they collapsed, they collapsed because they were relentlessly attacked in every imaginable way. Meanwhile Gorbachev far from being a visionary was an idiot, he was a wrong move, and what the USSR should have done was fix the flaws in what they were trying to do, and should have done it a lot sooner, BUT EVEN IF THEY HAD DONE EVERYTHING RIGHT AND MADE NO MISTAKES AT ALL, they still may have failed for the simple reason that they were being relentlessly attacked ... what Gorbachev tried to do was the wrong move, it failed because it was the wrong move, the Soviet Union was a great concept, but it was experimental, and it was attacked from day one, so it fell not out of failure per se, but because nothing that is new can survive such attacks with any ease, because everything that is new is vulnerable ... you wouldn't blame a chick for failing to be born and grow into an adult bird if you smashed its egg with a sledge hammer would you? It's exactly the same thing.
