I agree. Doordash is alright but can become costly with gas and constant repairs. Opportunities like the one mentioned in the video sound great but it's just not available for us car campers.

I wish you would have provided a bit more context on what gate guarding is. What the heck is the gate leading to? What is the environment you are living in? Etc
Gate guarding is using a device to check in and out oil trucks that are going to oil rigs. The environment can be really hot or really cold. Really dusty sometimes. Sometimes you’re required to be in a little out building. Sometimes you can be in your rv between trucks. You live in an rv (your own).
Hubby and I have been gate guarding for 4 years! We love it!! Easiest job either one of us has ever had!! When figuring out your pay, make sure you include the facts that you have no electric, water, or sewer bills. If you're on a 24 hr gate, not lot rent either! Besides Guard 1 that is mentioned in the video there are more guard companies like J&G Security, & Gate Guard Services. These are the only 2 that we have worked for that we would recommend! We've never worked for Guard 1 so we can't speak personally about the company. But we have heard good things!!
thanks for adding that info Dawn, the people in this video said their only expenses were cell phone, laundry and food...no other expenses (5:18) so I assume that this company (at least) paid their rent/electric/water/sewage/trash.
@@OldSchoolPrepper YES! The company will provide all of that at no cost to the workers. On a 24hr gate, they will bring a trailer with a generator and a non-potable tank and a black water tank for the guards to use.

After being here in the Patch for 4 years I can say that everyone's experience Gate Guarding is different, It isn't for everyone, but for some it is the only thing they do. Some work it seasonally some for years. Some gates really busy some are boring (you need a Hobby on most) If you only see the $$ per hour comparing it to other types of work you may miss some of the benefits to this type of work. I came here to give it a try and found the people and work easy going and for me the $$$ added up quickly. I stayed because the world went nuts and the oilfields stayed basically normal and are still the same place full of Hard-working people who are a pleasure to be around.

Interesting concept. I have a lot of questions but this is an interesting concept that I am particularly qualified for. I am a security site supervisor managing 16 security guards at a permanent site in Texas. I am not a nomad (yet), but I keep a bed setup in my van for occasions when I need to cover a shift. Having the bed in my car enables me to pull doubles and cover posts when needed and still maximize my sleep by sleeping immediately off site. Don't have to worry about the dreaded knock from Security when you *are* the Security, 😂 I am seriously considering transitioning to a nomadic or semi nomadic lifestyle at some point, but I never considered the possibility of doing it while remaining in the security guard industry.
As someone who has worked remotely for 2 decades. And who has a few university degrees. And can, and have, requested and received 4 or 5 times $250 a day, I can but say, gate keeping seems like a pretty good job. Even for a digital nomad. You get a guaranteed base income, and the rest of the time you can be digitally earning your other income. 🙂
Thanks Bob for this interview, I follow Bill and Darla on UA-cam, for a couple of years. They are the sweetest couple. So honest about life on wheels. Very PG with content, which is important to me. I have attended most of their LIVEstreams on Monday nights and now Sunday nights, while they are on gate guard duty. This was a great interview, full of good content and information.
Back in the 80s I traveled with a backpack, lot's of dishwasher jobs . Then up in Alaskan work camps . My next adventures will be in my overland 4x4 , tourist towns always have seasonal jobs . Might have to wash dishes , done it before .
PROBLEM! For SSI recipients, there is $2000-3000 CAP and work rules, people could lose income benefits if they break the rules. I would like to see at least 1 UA-cam video about how SSI nomad recipients can live the car/ RV/ Van life, keep SSI income benefits and make extra money working or passive income. LEGIT way not under the table way.
If you can work full time, you shouldn't get SSI. (DISABILITY) If you're are a regular social security recipient you are younger than 67 if they are limiting your income.
Thank you for another informative video. For the car people, Trusted House Sitters or another situation like it may be a good fit. There are more ways to earn money than there are people to do the jobs. I have found that if you have a positive attitude, are dependable and are willing to work, you will have work. Work for me is a way to give back and meet interesting people now. Money is not important, because I am secure and don't need much. I had a friend who ended up living in his jeep & his old neighbor had an auto mechanic shop that let him park there at night for free, to call the police on people who came to siphon gas out of the mechanic shops clients cars that were parked outside. One nite at 3:00 am a thief tried to siphon gas out of his jeep while he was asleep in it ! He waited until the thief got his pump down into his gas tank & he swiftly opened the door & yelled “WTF ARE YOU DOING??”And the thief dropped everything and ran off ! His presence did prevent lots of thieves from stealing gas.. most times he’d quietly call the police & the thieves got caught. I’m sure some repair shops that didn’t have a fenced in lot, would welcome someone staying on the property at night, to ward off gas thieves.. just an idea

Frac sites are very busy and if you get a mad land owner who wants the gate closed after every vehicle. But most are pretty good jobs but you can’t leave without a replacement
I hauled heavy haul into the windmill farms for years and they always had camper guards ..... nicest folks . Was always curious how it worked... Retired now... Opportunity?

You're NOT working every single hour/minute/second of the day or night. If a person were to clock in and out every time they had to check in a vehicle and got paid THAT amount, they'd likely make far less than what gate companies currently pay. The rest of the time, you're doing what you would normally do in your RV. Also, it's not for everyone.

I had the same issue.. got a psp2 possesion of stolen property 2nd degree at 19yrs old... im 52 now. but here in Washington state if youre fines are pd up for 10 yrs and you stayed out of trouble for the 10yrs leading up to petitioning the court.. youre eligble for expungement. I actually submitted mine to the court ..without a lawyer and had it erased about 10 yrs ago now.
My wife and I find we actually work about 10 minutes each hour gate guarding. The other 50 minutes are reading, exercising and watching youtube. Gate guarding is a great way for couples to earn money

@@OldSchoolPrepper the gates we have guarded were 24 hour gate and J&G Security ( the company we work for) provides a trailer that has a generator, water tank and black tank for your hookups. That is filled and emptied by the company so it's free service to us. We stay on site at the oil rig so no campsite fee
@@OldSchoolPrepper Zero $$ out of your pocket for utilities or lot rent if you're doing a couple's gate. Sometimes solos do have a campground they need to pay for while working a gate but typically the are given a stipend for that.

But I turned 79 today and don't want to make a commitment long-term. I'll be checking their YT sight, but I'm curious how seasoned "vagabonds" view solo men. Any comments?
Hmm.. I work at Amazon and make $200 per day. But I only work 4 days 10 hours. Over time I can do 15 hours if available. Or like 2 extra half shifts usually. $30 per hour .. Yes Amazon is very hard work in most areas.
While I was in Quartzsite for the RTR and the RV show I was not able to find any of these gate watching jobs. I walked by every booth and all the tents. I ended up going back to North Carolina disillusioned and disappointed. 😔I might try again next season.
sugar beet and corn harvest.. best way to make money. and only for like 2 months.. last year i made close to 8K from first part sept to late oct.. I worked for large farm outfit not the typical sugar beet gig. truck driver. heated, ac etc..
If they have been living full time in an RV for over 10 years - that means Drivers License renewals come into play - who's address are they using as permanent address with proof of residency? Tennessee, for example, is very hard to get a Drivers License or even a Stated Issued Identification card with out proof (lease, mortage, property taxes) of residency (among a bunch of other documents).
That’s not bad. Usually $500 a month to park an rv. When you get tired of the bs about safety that companies seem to wiggle out of when they need the job done, that looks like a good deal.

I didn’t need a job but I found one that is so easy and fun and pays so well I had to do it. I sit around a table and listen to music while packing cannibus joints in desert hot springs, ca. I take home around $500/week plus outstanding health(vision and dental) insurance, bonuses, paid vacay etc. I work about 6.5-7 hours a day. HMU if you’re curious. Van on!
It’s a good idea for some people but absolutely not for me. There is no way I would want to be prisoner 12 hours a day or 24 hours a day. What would be the point of that? I truly could not get my head around that at any stage in my life. Absolutely contrary to the nomad or wanderlust life. Also, it’s not a bad idea to be on your feet for 12 hours a day. It is a problem in this lifestyle.
$175 a day? Are you crazy? That's $7.30 an hour? It doesn't matter how little work there is to do. You are there 24 hours a day. Who are you trying to convince this is a good thing? Us or yourself. People DO NOT do this job. Go to the next town and get a security guard job that pays minimum wage. This is insane.
Yeah I am very confused about the job description. I’m familiar with the campground host model where you are checking folks in and locking up at night. Is the 24/7 model for monitoring commercial properties? Can you at least camp on site to save on rent?
Yes, but you have to put up with 20 or so screaming kids that don't like you and take advantage of you just because they can for 7 HOURS. You can't go to the bathroom when you need to, and the little rats will be totally disrespectful for the entire 7 hours. (Guess where I work.)
@@M4K9G22 All you are required to do is pop in and out of your RV or a guard shack and log traffic in and out of the rig site of an oil rig operation. Snap a photo (using a company-supplied i-Pad) of the vehicle plate, payload and get driver's name and company they're with. EZ work.

I started taking early retirement SS last October. I am not subject to the monthly average, per se, for 2023, just aggregate total of $21,240(1770 times 12). Therefore, I can work several months, not the whole year, to reach my limit.
Hurt on the Job spinal injury...i dont get anything near that a month..knowing we can get SS or SSDI in almost any country i moved as my disabilities would make it impossible to live in a car and rent in Seattle was nearly double my monthly income for a studio apartment...now my monthly bills are just below or at 1k a month...i have 2 homes a 3 bed 2 bath house in a gated community and a vacation condo..i see my doc once a month a specialist(would cost me about 300 an office visit here 24 dollars) my son goes to a private catholic school...i eat out 1-2x a week..and that also includes power water internet grocery my meds vitamins HOA for 2 homes...everything

I don't think that it's fair to say that it's $3.64 an hour per person since only one person is working at any time. In any 24-hour time period the couple does 24 person-hours of work for the employer, and the employer pays $175 for that work. So that works out to $175/24 = $7.29 for every person-hour of work.

For my own understanding, is this income cap for SS disability or SS retirement?
1200 a month limit.
When I retired 5 years ago SS told me that I could earn $17,600 per year before it impacted my income.
Would somebody explain to me how to receive EBT(food stamps) while living on social security and living and travelling in a van full time

A lot of state parks will give you a space if you work 20 hours/week. Army Corps of Engineers will also pay you to be a gate guard.

sugar beet and corn harvest.. best way to make money. and only for like 2 months.. last year i made close to 8K from first part sept to late oct.. I worked for large farm outfit not the typical sugar beet gig. truck driver. heated, ac etc..

If they have been living full time in an RV for over 10 years - that means Drivers License renewals come into play - who's address are they using as permanent address with proof of residency? Tennessee, for example, is very hard to get a Drivers License or even a Stated Issued Identification card with out proof (lease, mortage, property taxes) of residency (among a bunch of other documents).
The requirements are much lower in South Dakota and other states.

That’s not bad. Usually $500 a month to park an rv. When you get tired of the bs about safety that companies seem to wiggle out of when they need the job done, that looks like a good deal.

I didn’t need a job but I found one that is so easy and fun and pays so well I had to do it. I sit around a table and listen to music while packing cannibus joints in desert hot springs, ca. I take home around $500/week plus outstanding health(vision and dental) insurance, bonuses, paid vacay etc. I work about 6.5-7 hours a day. HMU if you’re curious. Van on!

It’s a good idea for some people but absolutely not for me. There is no way I would want to be prisoner 12 hours a day or 24 hours a day. What would be the point of that? I truly could not get my head around that at any stage in my life. Absolutely contrary to the nomad or wanderlust life. Also, it’s not a bad idea to be on your feet for 12 hours a day. It is a problem in this lifestyle.

$175 a day? Are you crazy? That's $7.30 an hour? It doesn't matter how little work there is to do. You are there 24 hours a day. Who are you trying to convince this is a good thing? Us or yourself. People DO NOT do this job. Go to the next town and get a security guard job that pays minimum wage. This is insane.

Yeah I am very confused about the job description. I’m familiar with the campground host model where you are checking folks in and locking up at night. Is the 24/7 model for monitoring commercial properties? Can you at least camp on site to save on rent?
Checking traffic in and out usually on a private ranch for oil workers on a drilling operation.

Yes, but you have to put up with 20 or so screaming kids that don't like you and take advantage of you just because they can for 7 HOURS. You can't go to the bathroom when you need to, and the little rats will be totally disrespectful for the entire 7 hours. (Guess where I work.)

@@M4K9G22 All you are required to do is pop in and out of your RV or a guard shack and log traffic in and out of the rig site of an oil rig operation. Snap a photo (using a company-supplied i-Pad) of the vehicle plate, payload and get driver's name and company they're with. EZ work.
A RV is not meant for long term they fall apart.
How do you get any deductions gate guarding. No expenses
You would need to talk to your tax person but you should be able to deduct a portion of your RV as you use it for a small office while on site.
More than enough money for me.

You can earn $1770 per month if you take early SSI. $4710 if you wait to full retirement age.
SSI is supplemental security income. It is not related to SS retirement. You can receive SSI at any age. Totally different program.
I started taking early retirement SS last October. I am not subject to the monthly average, per se, for 2023, just aggregate total of $21,240(1770 times 12). Therefore, I can work several months, not the whole year, to reach my limit.
James Rodriguez the limit usually goes up every year. It was $19,560 in 2022. In 2023, it was raised to $21,140.
Hurt on the Job spinal injury...i dont get anything near that a month..knowing we can get SS or SSDI in almost any country i moved as my disabilities would make it impossible to live in a car and rent in Seattle was nearly double my monthly income for a studio apartment...now my monthly bills are just below or at 1k a month...i have 2 homes a 3 bed 2 bath house in a gated community and a vacation condo..i see my doc once a month a specialist(would cost me about 300 an office visit here 24 dollars) my son goes to a private catholic school...i eat out 1-2x a week..and that also includes power water internet grocery my meds vitamins HOA for 2 homes...everything

I don't think that it's fair to say that it's $3.64 an hour per person since only one person is working at any time. In any 24-hour time period the couple does 24 person-hours of work for the employer, and the employer pays $175 for that work. So that works out to $175/24 = $7.29 for every person-hour of work.
