    Brett, I think this is one of the best, most insightful football videos I have ever seen. After watching your analysis on James, I went and watched the Chargers-Steelers game from week 13, and kept my eye on James on every one of the Chargers defensive snap. You are absolutely right - he always takes on the #2 eligible receiver on his side. On one play, Cris Collinsworth didn't know what James did, or why he did it. Cris was surprised that James suddenly dropped back into coverage when it looked as though he was going to rush Roethlisberger. Of course, I knew exactly what James was doing, and expected it, because of what you told us about James' responsibilities. Thank you so much for helping me to understand what I see on the field so much better than I would without your insights. I truly appreciate it.

    Packers fans have been constantly debating over giving up what looks like a perennial All-Pro in Derwin James for Jaire Alexander. Which is rather amazing because Jaire had a stellar rookie year barring the groin injury... but that's how good Derwin James first year was.

      Agreed, he was the Jerry Rice of safeties as far as knowing where to be and getting there with as little waisted movement as possible. Like Rice he may have had very little training to minimize his 40 time. Rice was quoted in saying, “I didn’t know how to run.” This leads me to believe that Rice may have been a high 4.3-4.4 40 yard dash guy, considering how he consistently blew past corners on the field.

    Hi Brett, first off gotta say thank you for all your content, you do such a great job. I've got a question however (hope someone in the comments may be able to help aswell).... A while back you made a video on a player but then started to talk about Edge defenders setting a soft edge & a hard edge on certain plays. I found that really interesting, as an Edge defender myself at my level... The problem is, I can't find/remember the video you said it on as it wasn't a video where you were specifically looking at an Edge Defender. It's been driving me insane because I'd love to watch it again. If yourself or anyone could help, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Amazing video. I could tell by watching all the Bolt's games this year that he was a special talent, just through his power and athleticism and the consistent plays he made to thwart offences. One small (but important) play that comes to mind was when he tackled Kelce and dragging him backwards, stopping the first down. He arrived to make the tackle faster than most safeties would, and I am sure that most of them would have been beaten by Kelce to the first down marker. This vid has made me realise how critical he is to our defence. With the signings of Tillery, Davis Sr and Adderley, do you think there is any real weakness for opponents to exploit in our defence this year?

Before he was drafted I knew I was looking at hof material. He will dominate the secondary in the NFL this coming year with Nasir adderley who was also my favorite safety in this years class. I love this because between this video and the Eddie Jackson video, I can now see what my Packers are doing on defense, Adrian Amos is a box type Strong Safety while Darnel Savage is a center fielding FS (who can play the run if he has to), I'm actually learning stuff! Thanks for the video! In fact, your insight is so damn good, it allowed me to imagine what the Packers defense can do against each and every team on the schedule, especially the Giants and Cowboys given that they're both pretty much going to be run heavy teams. Even though the Packers D is a 3-4, we don't have true 3-4 personnel, Kenny Clark while good enough to play 3-4 NT, he came from a 4-3 D in UCLA and is better in the 2-4-5 setup as a result (he's also undersized imo for a 3-4 NT, when I think 3-4 NT's I think of Dan Wilkenson, Ted Washington, Keith Traylor, BJ Raji, Dexter Lawrence, all 320+lbs.). We also don't have depth at ILB unless we put Rashaan Gary there, and Dean Lowry is an average at best 3-4 DE. So it got me thinking, how can we stop Barkley and Elliot without a base defense? We can't play 4-3 because we have 3-4 type LB's, but we can't play 3-4 because not enough talent. Enter the Buddy Ryan 46 defense, and I immediately felt like a genius, it's an offset 4-3 with the Strong Safety lined up alongside the MLB, with the 2 OLB's lined up like 3-4 OLB's, and the FS deep, which given Adrian Amos and Savage, fits them PERFECTLY! But more than that it fits our guys AND it creates a 1-1 substitution with our Nickel CB for an Extra LB.
    Imagine the 46 defense, the SLB is Kyler Fackrell, WLB is Preston Smith, MLB Blake Martinez, Z Smith and Gary are the DE's, the D-line, and Amos in the box, 8 men in the box, just thinking about that makes me wish I could show this to Mike Pettine our DC, granted it has a weakness vs the Play Action, and considering the Giant's O-line this defense would be overkill. Like I said I would only run it vs the Cowboys so as to bring something different to the table and considering most of the teams we're facing are pass first teams (even the Broncos I'd consider pass first given how early in the year we're facing them) we wouldn't have to use this defense much. What do you think?

      @kellyreed4560 5 років тому

      Packer fan as well and im not sold on Gary...cant see him playing LB really unless hes blitzing. If Savage is the real deal then he and Amos will cure alot of our wounds. Alexander will be a revelation if he holds up in coverage like hes shown. That second corner spot will be huge. Considering all the draft capital we have spent in our secondary we shouldnt be having any problems in coverage AT ALL!

    • @frenchfrey65
      @frenchfrey65 5 років тому

      @@kellyreed4560 Watch Brett's videos on Gary, I was sold by them, he's more of an inside rusher than edge (he can do that too but he's better inside), which is why I thought it was better for him to be ILB, he can also play 3-4 Weakside DE, but that leaves ILB wide open for attack with the lack of depth there. If Gary is ILB, then we'd play Dean Lowry who like I said is average at best 3-4 DE. Thing is we want our best guys on the field at all times, right now we lack depth at ILB and WDE unless we play 2-4-5 where we don't need a WDE and Gary can play ILB.

    As a FSU fan you saw this all the time, I think he was underrated coming into the draft because the lost year when he was injured, and his final year he was working himself back into game shape definitely should have been a top 5 pick I’m still trying to get over the Raiders picking Kolton Miller over him and letting him go to a division rival, Typical bad Raider drafting including this year

    Told everybody this is the kid I wanted coming out the draft. And he exceeded even my expectations. This next year, people have to watch out for Greedy Williams. He's going to be sooooooo much better than people realize as long as the Browns don't get too clever and stick to playing man on that back end.

    Jon Gruden has gone on record saying that the Raiders wanted Derwin. But they couldn't justify taking him because they had just drafted Joseph and Melifonwu in consecutive years. Here we are in 2019 and Melifonwu is a bust, Joseph is on his way out, and we used another first rounder on a safety. I like Abram but he is nowhere near as good as James. We should have drafted Derwin and drafted Jawaan Taylor or Risner this year.
