How to Turn a Salt and Pepper Shaker

- I demonstrate how to turn a salt or pepper shaker in this fun, easy beginner woodturning project. It is essentially a small box. I make the salt shaker of white oak and the pepper shaker of walnut. I add liming wax to the salt shaker.

Really good video, Mike. I made our oldest daughter salt and pepper shakers that looked like shotgun shells and a tooth pick holder that looked like a rifle shell. Our entire family are avid hunters.

Of course you could also chase threads! Make a deeper recess and use a cork.
Hi, Mike. Nice project! I'm finally catching up on all the videos on my "watch later" list. When you were drilling the hole, you stopped and wiped the drill with a q-tip and some fluid, then rubbed some wax on the bit? It was 4x speed at that point, I think, and I'm not sure if that's what you did.
I was just wiping off the stuck shavings with a toothbrush and then rubbing the flutes with a wax candle to make drilling easier with less screeching.
I like those shakers. My mom has collected salt and pepper shakers. so I think you just gave me an excellent idea for Christmas present. Thank you. Another idea you gave me was to get a ACU jacket as a turning smock. I did and I love it. Thank you for that. Now I have a question. What is the purpose for all the different colored stickers or paint on your tools? Thanks again for all the good videos. Aaron
The green tape is to make it easier to collect my tools after temporarily loaning them out during a workshop. I sometimes paint letters on the butts to more easily identify the tool when the tip is down. SG for Spindle gouge, X for scraper etc.
Mike Peace Woodturning I wondered if it was something to do with identifying the kind of blade it was. I've been thinking about doing that to mine, however I don't necessarily need to do it just yet. I don't have enough tools to get confused. Although I get confused about a lot of other things pretty easily, so I guess it really doesn't matter how many tools I have.lol

Mike, very nice set. what is your thoughts on using a jam chuck to finish the top? Since you didn't, I was wondering if there was a problem with the idea.
There was no need for a jam chuck since my goal was an asymmetrical shape across the top from a sander.

No, I would advise against it. It doesn't add anything and might affect the taste of the condiment.
What did you do about the hole at bottom, some plug of some kind

What are the bungs called and where can I get them? I tried finding them on Amazon but didn’t have any luck

How did you determine the drill bit size for the holes? Love your work.
Richard Raffan's book I showed in the video. I suppose it would be easy enough to experiment with a small container and tape on a disk with the holes you want to experiment with.
Just washing and rinsing the inside is good for cleaning before filling with salt and pepper?
Moderate sanding inside and rubbing it with a paper towel should remove any dust. I would not want to subject a finished piece to water.

What were you rubbing on the sanding belt to clean it off?

Very nice Mike...! I guess if we didn't want to pay for shipping we could purchase reasonably priced salt and pepper shakers from a discount store and use the bottom stoppers from them. What are your thoughts on that?
Sounds like a plan if you can find some cheap enough.
Yep, I’m thinking Dollar Store shakers.... shipping & handling fees really add up on small items.

I might try this idea. I wonder how difficult it would be to make the tiny holes in letter patterns..."S" for salt & "P" for pepper. Might be redundant since the color difference does the same thing. Maybe I should use matching wood for this idea. Just a thought. :-)
The challenge is to have the right number of holes for a single shake. Letters might over do it. The other possibility is a matching set except for perhaps a contrasting ring that might hint at the contents. A light color shaker with a dark wood band could signal pepper, for example.
Good point on the number of holes. I'll try super fine coffee ground powder and CA to make the pepper accent ring. Maybe some sort of white powder for the salt shaker.

Shouldn't the holes for the pepper shaker be larger than the salt since the grains of pepper is larger than the grains of salt?
I followed Richard Raffan's guidance: Pepper 1/16" and Salt 3/32"
