Kohler; Toro Lawn Mower Repair Won't Start? Step by Step Carburetor Repair 149 CC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Toro Recycler Push Lawn mower repair - Kohler - Wont Start - Carburetor Service. Troubleshooting your Kohler small engine.
Removal, disassembly, service and re-assembly of the carburetor on the Kohler 149cc 6.75 ft lb torque engine. This unit also utilizes an automatic choke. This method will work for 90% of You. The rest, well, you'll probably need a new carb since it's to far gone to clean. This probably happened because fuel was left in the carb. The newer fuel with the ethanol usually only lasts a few months and it'll start to rot out your fuel system. Don't let this happen by draining the gas tank and the bowl at the end of each season. The fuel stable helps, but will still gell out the bowl if left long enough.
I just wanted to say thank you very much. Our mower hasn't ran for a full summer. My wife and I are grateful. Our kids not so much because they know that they will have to mow the lawn this weekend
That's awesome! So glad I could help.. I actually enjoyed mowing the lawn when I was a youngster... 😀
Your video was spot on and worked like a flippin charm. I was able to get it cleaned and my 15 year old was able resume his yard cutting duties. Lol😂
able to resume
That's awesome! So glad I was able to help. It's great to have one of those automatic lawn mowing machines!
You're so comfortable in front of the camera. It made watching your video easy and easy to follow.
Awesome! Thank you so much.. 😀
Anybody else notice that the top of the mower has “Guaranteed to Start” stamped on the top of it? Lol
It's only guaranteed to start as long as there's nothing wrong with it! 🤣🤣
If you have crap in your gas, dirt, etc, it will eventually block up the tiny holes in carburetor. No way will it start until you follow this video, and clean it out. After several years, your gas tank probably needs cleaning too. Just a fact of life.
Right
Guaranteed to start on the first pull...not the 1000th🤣
Yes, just bought this mower a year ago and aggravated at this pitch on guaranteed to start BS. It's all about the carburetor corrosion in the metal bowl that is due to the ethanol in the fuel we have to buy these days. Cleaning the carburetor every year is a pain. Notice that Koehler has a drain plug on the side of the bowl. So use it drain all the fuel out of the tank and engine at the end of the mowing season . Going to try that this year . Good luck !
Yes absolutely a good idea to drain the bowl at the end of the season. Honda does that too. I always try to use Ethanol Free fuel if it's available locally. It has a longer shelf life and doesn't attract the moisture the regular gas does.. Hope that helps.. 😊
Thank you so much for this video. It is by far the most most helpful of the many I've seen on UA-cam! I took everything apart, followed your video assiduously and BINGO!! The lawnmower has been sitting and not working for 3 years and now runs like a champ. Especially useful while we're under this "stay at home" order!
You are so welcome! Thank u for the great comment! I'm glad your paying attention to the stay at home order! Here in Virginia they don't seem to be listening and just going about their business.
Very helpful!!! Great job. I was able to follow your instruction perfectly and I have never messed with a carburetor before. Thank You!
joshua weaver Awesome! Glad the video helped😀😀!
Great job. I like the detail you did of removing and replacing the linkage. That’s a tricky part.
Thanks 👍. And you're welcome.. 😊
I have this lawnmower and engine. The steps in the video fixed my problem Bad gas and clogged carb. Now using Trufuel 4 cycle fuel (gray can) in the engine and started first crank.
Sweet! I'm glad it helped. If you have a local gas station that sells ethanol free fuel, that would be a great and cheaper alternative to the Trufuel. The trufuel is great, but it is expensive... 😀
Very helpful video with clear instructions and good camera work. Thanks!
Awesome! You're welcome and thanks for the great feedback.. 🙂
thanks. it looks complicated, but very thorough instructions. Very educational. I will keep watching this for the next few hours until I understand how to clean the mower's carburator. thanks again.
Thank U!... IF you Have a question, I will try to answer it..
Thanks much. Did this in no time at all and the mower started on the first pul!!!! Great money saving video. Was just about ready to shell out repairman money.
John Kappes glad to hear that! Thanks
Thanks for the tutorial - enabled me to pull my carb apart and get my mower to start running once again.
Excellent!
Thanks so much for the video, very easy to follow. Lawnmower started first time after this.
You're Welcome 😁😁
You are amazing ... I hope you continue ... I will send you my Toro 8:32 Lawn Tractor that continues to leak gasoline for the past three years ... LOL .. have a great day thank you
You're welcome and thank you for the kind words and great feedback! I can fix your tractor.. 🙂
Thank you, fixed my Kohler. No more surging! Maybe it will last another 7 years.
Excellent!
Mine was a little different but I got the idea and it worked thank you!
Excellent! Glad I was able to help. You're welcome..
A neighbor gave it away since he hasn’t used it in over 5 years and now it didn’t start. Now that I got it, I came across this vid. Quite a lot Of steps and small pieces but I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll update you later.
It's not as bad as it looks! ,, :-)
Take a Bath Productions ok, so I did it. Took it apart but couldn’t remove the jets because it was on too tight and start stripping a bit so I just sprayed it with carb cleaner. Clean everything else as you did but no luck. I then added carb cleaner in the throttle (in place of starter fluid, actually works), it starts for about 2 seconds and then turns off. Checked the fuel line, cleaned the gas tank, tried again, no luck. Used carb spray “starter fluid” again, started for a second or 2 then off. So it’s definitely not getting fuel in there. Thoughts?
@@davidamarquez I had a couple of these that I actually couldn't get going. But, I've done lots and lots that Did get going ok. The ones I couldn't get going I suspect had low compression and were just junk. Do you think the one you have has adequate compression? If you have a gauge that'd be helpful. Should be at least 80psi.. if not a bit more. The only thing I can think of if it's not the compression is those jets that didn't get cleaned. It could be that.
Take a Bath Productions if it was compression, would the machine even start with starter fluid? It sounded fine for those few seconds.
Update; it didn’t work. I ended up taking it to a lawnmower shop and they got it working. $80 and a tune up and it’s as good as new.
Rudi : Thanks just bought a nice Koehler push mower and it's set up and the gas really messed up the carburetor , thanks for your step by step disassemble process . Helped me in all ways , the lawn mower Is running now .
Excellent! Glad it could help... :-)
Thank you. Exactly what was my issue.
Excellent! You're welcome.. 😊😊
Super chingon trabajo men mil gracias por tu ayuda y buen video, saludos desde Michoacán México
¡Impresionante! Gracias por el amable comentario...
Very informative and the shooting angle is as good as it can be. I am going to follow exactly today and surely thank you very much for this great how-to-save money and build-up self-confidence video.
Thank You for the nice comment!!
Hi, Thank you once again. I did the carburetor clean up and wow, the never-start engine after the Toronto winter started on the first pull with Quick Start and then it starts by itself from then on. I was so surprise and happy. Two problems I have faced. The center jet screw was hard to turn and actually one side of the screw was gone I couldn't unscrew it at all. I saw the center hole was plugged up so a steel wire did the trick. I figured out once the first gas passage hole was plugged up no further plugging occurs inside the long brass jet. Also, I have to loosen the bimetal linkage from the exhaust to get the 1" wire linkage off which took a bit longer. All in all, no sweat, it was fun and really worthwhile on the time spent.
Eric Chan Good deal... glad u got it going again!
Excellent video. Even more helpful when it came time to putting it back together
Thanks!
Nice educational video Take a Bath! I have not started this mower with the 149 cc Kohler for over a year and yes, it didn't start in the spring a year ago so I didn't use it but now I need it. I did clean the carburetor and bowl very well, nothing left to obstruct or seemingly cause a problem for starting. Once I hooked it all back up as it was before and what you show too, it didn't start. The new gas is not getting into the bowl....? So I disconnected hoses and checked to supply of new gas coming into the carburetor. Gas is flowing freely in the supply hose up to the carburetor. So I also tried using starting fluid to see if it would run for a second with that. Yes, the engine fired and ran about a second, so I did it two more times with a light shot of starting fluid, both times fired right up and of course died. Yes, I did put in a new spark plug as well and I did clean the inline plastic filter from the tank as well, also the jets in the carburetor as you showed. Recently I met a guy who repairs these engines regularly told me that he never fixes the carburetors on these engines, always replaces. So I ordered one and now have it. But I have not replaced with the new carburetor yet since I'm not getting gas into the bowl anyway. Scratching my head, I decided to look at your video again to see what I missed. Can't see that I've overlooked anything. What do you think? Maybe a bad bowl pin? I guess I'll be taking it off the engine again. Thanks..
JD Kegler from what your describing there.. the only thing that would stop fuel from going into the carburetor... as long as it's getting thru the fuel line of course... would be the needle that goes up and down with the float... I've seen those freeze up in its sleeve... the seat... if u were able to remove the needle freely... then there could be something clogged right where the fuel line connects... there's really not much else it could be
Yes, I wasn't labeling the float pin correctly, calling it the bowl pin. It was late, ha. Yes, I took it all apart and remember that you didn't cover taking the pin out and cleaning it (4:36) since your's came out easily. And probably because it's usually not a problem I guess. As I took the float off, I remember trying to see if the pin would come out and it would not, should have been an indicator to me but I was concerned that I might break it if I applied too much pressure. But the second time I pried on it and it did pop out. Yes, it was pretty dirty and I had to scrub the pin with carb cleaner and my fingernail as nothing else would clean it well enough without possible damaging it's delicate surface. There also was a small circular and solid chunk of junk the size of the shaft that popped out of it. It does seem that the 10% ethanol is a problem or the problem with many of the carburetor problems on many different small engines. The deposits in the bowl were like corn sticky stuff. We do not have gasoline without ethanol in the area. I've read that having a mix with the recommended jet cleaner mixed in the gas prior to putting in the tank will help keep the engine running longer or the carb from clogging up. I'm going to give that a try. You put out the best video that I found Take a Bath! Thanks a lot for answering me so quickly too! Have a good day! Almost forgot; it started on the first try!!!!!
JD Kegler I'm glad u got it going!... yes those usually don't freeze up like that,.. but I have seen it before..check the oil in a day or two as well as the air filter... if that needle was that bad... it could leak... I've seen them leak into the oil.. or go the other way and soak the air filter... if both are good.. u should be golden!
#moneysaver in had bought a whole new mowern only to take it back bcuz it wouldn't start ran across this video now i don't want to stop mowing!!!!!!!!!lol thnks "tabp"
Thank u... :-)
I find that taking off the heat sensor off the muffler and don’t mess with linkages easier. But you do have to take off the recoil which is just 3 10mm nuts . Good vid
Good tip! Yea, you might be right.. I've never tried taking off the sensor on the muffler.. I'll try it next time.. :-)
Thank you, good instruction video and well explained. I love it. I used it for Lawn boy 10605 which has same motor used. Thumbs up!
Thank You! And you're welcome.. :-)
Thank you so much for the video. It was exactly the problem that I was having!
Elton Williams excellent!
Excellent video, but I think you missed what I think is the low speed jet which is under the idle stop screw. You take out the stop screw, then pull up on the black plastic jet body. This jet has a microscopic hole in it, and my smallest tip cleaner wasn't even close to going through it. I used the tip of a sewing needle and was able to clear it. There are also 2 o-rings on the plastic body of the jet one of which had broken. You clued me in how to take out the main jet by pushing down on end from inside the carb, thank you. Gotta say, I have probably done 500 or more carbs in my life, and this is my first small Kohler carb - boy, I am not a fan of this Kohler design.
Thanks for the great info! I may have missed that, and I apologize.. I mostly do the B&S engines and I do like those a lot better. Hondas are good engines, but not a fan of the carb design either with the two long bolts..
@@JLPicard440 No problem. I missed it too and thot I was finished with carb till I saw it on another video. By the way, those 2 o-rings will probably break when you try to take them off the plastic housing so don't recommend you take them off. If they do break, the Kohler kit p/n is 14757 03-S and is 7.95 at opeengines.com. Keep up the good work!!
@@jimmy6501 Thank you for the info!
a way I discovered to try and clean those jet holes and correct me if I'm wrong in doing it this way... but take the small end of the copper piece, place it against the carb cleaner and spray until there is spray coming out of all the jet holes... repeat cycle from other end etc... until all jet holes have spray coming out fluidly... ??
That'll probably work unless the carb is in really bad shape. When that fuel gels up, it's more difficult to remove the goop without a physical wire or something substantial going through the holes. But if it's only a light issue, then yes, that method will work fine..
@@JLPicard440 it worked on mine, just to be safe too... I didn't use the welding wire as I didn't have any, but found a bread tie (stripped down to the wire) worked really well also.
@@cadrehansen5045 That's a great idea! Yep that'll work.. 🙂
Thanks........ I might try that.....
Hey there’s a gasket between the air filter box and carb. I noticed you didn’t replace it. Is it even necessary to replace?
It depends. Most of the time when you take it apart the gasket will survive and not tear. If the gasket is intact I rarely will replace it. If it's torn up then yea, you'll have to replace it. Some mechanics might not agree with this, but I haven't noticed any ill effects by not replacing it when it stays in one piece.
@@JLPicard440 thanks so much for the reply. I meant that it looked like you didn’t even have it on. I wouldn’t think a gasket would go there, only reason I know is because I am currently taking apart my carb and there’s a worn out gasket in that spot. Unless yours was stuck to the air box. Anyway I was trying to see if I could do without it. Thanks for the video also. It’s a great help
@@georgek2802 OIC.. IF you could give me the time stamp, I'll take a look and see if I can remember if one goes there...
I have one just like it and it has become my arch enemy, i replaced the carb, coil, plug and air filter. It starts first pull and runs great for about 5 minutes then sounds like its running out of gas and dies. Any ideas on the cause?
Well, you've already replaced pretty much everything it could be... make sure the gas is clean and doesn't have any water in it. Possibly the fuel tank cap is causing a vacuum in the tank.... there's supposed to be a way to vent the tank... try loosening the cap and see if the problem goes away. Don't do this on a full tank as it will probably spill all over the place...
These engines have an automatic choke activated by a heat sensitive spring the spring is prone to problems that would cause the choke to stay closed and it would die just as you describe.
What's the carburetor overhaul kit part number in Amazon going crazy finding it. Thanks
HI, I doubt it would be worth overhauling this carburetor. 99% of the time, I clean these. But if it's not cleanable, a new carburetor is usually less than $20. I don't know the carburetor number. IF you send your engine model number, I can try to find it for you..
Would suggest the cleaning with steel wool be done first to keep the dust from getting into the clean carb.
I usually blow everything back out again after using steel wool..
THANKS!🖐🤠👍
No problem 👍
Cleaned out the carburetor it starts perfect now but I now noticed is leaking gas on the carburetor ? Any advice
Depends on where it's leaking from.. If it's leaking from the bowl, then the round o-ring (that connects the bowl to the carb body) is either crinkled or it's bad,... if it's leaking out of the carb itself where the air goes in, then it's probably the needle and seat that is connected to the float... hope this answers your question...

I have searched and searched but couldn't find the answer. Actually I was working on a Yardpro lawn mower having the same Kohler engine my neighbor has. I have a Toro which also used the same Kohler engine, at least they looked the same from the outset. However, the Toro is much more money and it has the "guarantee to start on first pull" statement on the engine while the Yardpro doesn't. Can any one tell me if there is any actual differences between the two engines or just a sales glimmick??
Eric Chan all I can say is that the guaranteed to start on the first pull is a joke! I'm quite sure it's a sales gimmick
Thanks for your reply. I think you are right. Buddy, you are helping many in your own ways, Good for you.
I'm guessing the gasoline needs to be drained out before you take the carburetor out correct?
No u can punch the fuel line with vise grips... but I usually remove the fuel tank anyway and clean it just to make sure I dont re contaminate the carb
Thank you, going to attempt this tomorrow
I'll keep my fingers crossed!
I took the carb apart and it was clean. Still wont start. Wondering if it's the spark plug or the auto choke
It could appear clean but still have trash somewhere in it clogging something. Did you clean out any of the little holes? You should be able to easily test the auto choke. When you put the carb back on can you move the auto choke back and fourth? It should be in the choked position when it's cold..
@@JLPicard440 Of course I did. None of it was clogged.
@@The_Gallowglass OIC.. Have you looked at the auto choke? They do go bad every once in a while. The mechanism on the muffler is what usually goes bad with rust. But if your carburetors default position is closed and choked when the engine is cold then more than likely it's already working. If the choke is closed and it won't start do you have one of those neon bulb spark checkers? It's possible the magneto is bad..
@@JLPicard440 I took apart the carb again, it was getting stuck. Then I poured seafoam in the gas and carb. I think maybe it was a combo of stuck choke and clogged line. Seems to be working. Also I put a new spark plug for good measure.
@@The_Gallowglass Oh excellent! Glad you got it going again.. 🙂
My self propelled cable is broken on my troy bilt front welldrive any suggestions
Help
I would replace it. I have some video's on replacing the cable on Toro's but not on Troy Bilt. I'd do a video if I had one here that needed a cable..
Great video. One problem though, I saw a video before I found this and it was for a different mower of the same type. In it, I took off the top linkage by unscrewing it from the other side of the engine. There was a little silver spacer and I have no idea where it came from. Any help on where that goes so I can reassemble my mower? Thanks!
Jay Foulk look at 1:40 is that the spacer you mean ?
No. I see that one and was glad you mentioned that but this one is a little smaller and silver, not black.
I did remove the top cover so I could get at the bolts on the linkage on the other side. Could it be a spacer from that?
This is the linkage you took off at 2:30.
Don't worry about it. I just put it back together and I don't think it started this easy when I first got it! This had happened once before (bad gas) and I just kept spraying it and flushed the gas but this is the ticket! Thanks so much Take a Bath Productions!
Thanks for the video, but .. did it start?? I did mine and still wont start... :^(
Sorry for the late response, your comment was lost in the mix.. Yes it started... Did you make sure fuel in tank doesn't have any water in it?
At the end, should have shown that it started!
I usually do, sorry about that...
Camera on a tripod, opposite side looking down at what your working on would have been helpful. I do appreciate the video though.
Sorry about that, I do do that sometimes.... Thanks...
Why did he not start this engine? ???????
It just makes the video longer... the engine did run fine..
Did it start??
Of course!
Take a Bath Productions okay, so I used this video for my own lawn mower and it started up! Thanks so much for making this video!
Awesome! Glad you got it going.... :-). You're welcome..
How can i purchase a cover to the filter? Can You help me?! I live in mexico

There's the link for the filter cover... Amazon should ship to mexico? Or do they have a Mexico only website like europe does? I don't know, but at least the part number should be there for you....
Thanks for watching..
I have a Toro that won't start
Could be many things...
I replaced my carbutetor and it still will only run for 15 sec
That's a good one... any chance there's trash in the fuel? Was the fuel hose contaminated? Water in the fuel? did it sit for long period of time, or all of a sudden quit from running fine?... I don't have enough info to give u a decent answer....
I changed the spark plug, I removed the fuel filter & checked the fuel line, and I replaced the carburetor. the fuel is about a month old. I have a Toro 149cc with a Kohler engine
Ronald Cook it sounds like u still might have trash in the fuel... I'd try draining the fuel into a clean clear container so u can see it... u may have to take new carb apart to blow out any trash that could have gotten into it.... unless you're loosing spark for some reason... magneto could be grounding out intermittently.... just throwing it out there as a possibility.... the only other thing I can think of is if someone hit something in the yard and knocked the flywheel just a little out of time.... but it would most likely just run like crap if that was the problem.... hope that'll help you a little bit
thanks i'll try your suggestions
Ronald Cook try running it with the gas cap off. Does it stay on?
i have spent $75 dollars and 6 hours of my life, this toro is trash.
Sorry to hear that..
