Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we'll be taking a look at the Yakima SkyBox NX 18. This is going to be a large, but also versatile roof box and it has some extra features you might be interested in. The Yakima SkyBox series are really popular roof boxes because of the types of cargo they can carry. So on a range of skis to suitcases, they're more on the suitcases scale because of the height of the roof box, while also providing a lot of cargo space. Now this is the NX series, so the NX 18 is a larger box with upgraded features like a nicer finish, a nicer clamp, and really easy-to-use mounting system. It also has its pros and cons though, so we'll talk about that in this video to see if it's right fit for you, your vehicle, and whatever you're carrying.
NX 18 means 18 cubic feet of interior space and for a large box, it's big, but surprisingly not that bulky. So here I have it on a sedan wagon and I'm not worried about hatch clearance. I still have plenty of space in front of my car. This is gonna be about seven feet long, exterior dimension. Yakima's really proud of their nano-texture finish.
That's why they call it the NX. And this is a textured finish that I call glossy matte. What's unique to this box is both the top and the bottom have that finish. So what happens is your roof boxes tend to get scratched up, both in storage as well as when you're driving around. So ideally, please don't park underneath branches or underneath trees, but even if you do, this is less likely to get scratched.
To further protect your cargo from the outside elements, you have this lip design, so this overhangs to let the water splash down, but if there's any water splashing up, you can see it further here that this forms a lip to let the water come up and go right back down and away from your cargo. So opening up the latch opens up the lid and it is kind of heavy, so depending on your vehicle, you may need to use one or two hands to lift it up, but once it's up, it stays in position. You have some heavy duty latches on the end. Sometimes they annoy me because of I can't put my cargo where the latch is, but in our case here, this actually goes over your cargo. So that's the box overall.
It's strong, it's durable, it has a nice textured finish, but you saw it was fully loaded up with stuff. Let's take a look at how I got that there. So now it's time for my favorite segment, how much stuff can you stuff in stuff So here we'll talk about where you usually store your stuff, what kind of stuff are you carrying around, and what kind of stuff can fit inside of your cargo box. And we have all kinds of stuff here. So we have some skis, a snowboard, a small surfboard, my coat, some sleeping bags, some other bags, some larger bags, chairs. These are all different things you might need to carry around. So for the skis, that one's easy. There's that length of 195 centimeters for your NX 18 and there's also information on our site when it comes to the description for the length and the height of what you can carry. The height of this box at the tallest point is 15 inches and that's a lot of height for your larger cargo items. Something that helps me when loading this up is the lid opening. So this is 11 1/2 inches. So, if your middle or your bottom part of your box is already filled up and you're trying to fit something through the opening and it doesn't fit, then more likely than not, you will not be able to close the lid on it. So now we're going to load this box up with as much of this stuff as we can fit inside of it. (items clunking) (items clunking) (items clunking) Last thing, let's close this, and see if it closes. Okay, click. That's secure. It locks, key removes, that's everything. Of that big pile of stuff, here's what's left over. I didn't put the surfboard because I didn't wanna put the bags on top of the surfboard, and this bag of straps was a little too tall, so I would just use the straps individually and stick them there in the box. So other than that, that was a lot of stuff. So even your smaller surfboards can fit inside of the box. Usually, even though they're longer, the height is not enough for the fins, but this one's perfectly fine. So we saw the box, we saw the types of cargo you can put in the box. If all that still looks good to you, the next question is, will this fit your vehicle if you don't already have a roof rack, we have a lot of custom fit roof rack options for your vehicle here at etrailer and this will fit most of them.

Will this fit well for my 2021 sante Fe with the factory installed roof racks?

It'll fit, but you'll want to make sure you have enough length on the roof so you can open the rear hatch with the roof box in place. Push the front crossbar as far forward as it will go, then measure from the center of it rearward to the seam where the roof and the hatch meet. If this distance is 50 inches or more, you'll be able to open the rear hatch with the box in place on the roof.

If your Escalade crossbars are no larger than 3-1/2" wide x 1-11/16" tall and can be adjusted so the crossbar spread is between 24" - 42", the Yakima SkyBox NX would work great for you. Check out this link for current pricing:
