    I’m glad you’ve taken more time on it than you originally intended. So many people these days are trying to pump out builds as fast as they possibly can, and don’t get me wrong a lot of them end up great! But there’s nothing wrong with taking a little more time on it and getting everything done exactly right the first time!

    The first time turning the key and starting the engine on a build is the best feeling.
    The little extras on a build are worth it in the end even if they do add more time to the project, usually easier to incorporate while at the build stage, and no regret later thinking "I should have..."

    You’re the guy I want to see take a 2011 to 2013 Suburban and make a triangular four link long travel setup, BUT keep the front suspension a ifs, only bulletproofed. There’s a million all aluminum Generation 4 LS based Chevy 4x4s with fully boxed frames out there needing more options than the standard heavy front axle swap. RCV makes cv axles for Chevy 1500s now. Be the first to make it so. Suburban’s are super popular for Overlanding now. Keep up the great content!! :)

    Ian, it is a pleasure to watch you fabricate. I have been a fan since way back when you were working with Jesse on Xtreme. I love the "all skill, no drama" approach to your youtube videos. It is both rare and refreshing. I forgive the "bourbon segments" which are calculated drama.
    This should be called the no-kludge channel. I love Fab Rats and Matt's Off-Road Recovery, and to a much lesser extent Bleepin Jeep They make things that work... mostly, but make me cringe. Fab Rats less cringing than Matt, but still some. Bleepin Jeep has two strikes, drama for drama's sake, and questionable fabrication. In fact, most of the fabrication channels on the internet have more drama than skill. I find myself skipping ahead on most of a video, while I watch your's straight through, and then watch again.
    I love all of this build,, save the choice and weight of the diesel, and have watched each episode many times. Yeah, the diesel is unusual, just not my cup of tea. In aircraft, motorcycles and other vehicles, lightweight is king.
    For your viewing audience, taking longer is no big deal, just more episodes to enjoy. And I salute the desire to get it the way you want it, instead of arbitrarily fast. I once worked for a manufacturing manager that told me you have three competing goals in most things. Speed, Quality, and Low Cost. Pick any two and you can prevail, but never three. I'm glad you choose Quality.
    As for air filters, that airflow rating is for a completely clean filter, which isn't a bad assumption for on-road vehicles. But you want that airflow value, when the filter has seen 300 miles of dusty road. You can only get that with a bigger filter.
    Take care!

    Ian, love watching your builds. But you need to be careful. I suspect that the MAF sensor is calibrated for a 3" pipe. You may have some metering concerns at higher throttle settings due to the higher air flow velocity with the 2" pipe that you put the MAF into. You will probably need to build the air filter and MAF into a 3" tube to get the engine to fuel correctly. Cheers.

    • @BigTireGarage

    I hope you have better luck then I have trying to keep the R2.8 cool under load. Around town it’s fantastic! On the highway in the summer under a constant load is a different story. It’s never over heated or thrown a code because I watch it, but trying to keep up with traffic or pass a truck the temp climes fast! I went with a SPAL electric fan because the CFM was the highest I could find. I even went with a heavy duty radiator and it still climes fast. My next step is maybe moving the intercooler to let more air flow to the radiator. Best of luck, loving the videos

    • @BigTireGarage
      @BigTireGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting, where is "home" for you I know Trent Mcgee has his in PHX and I will ask him if has had any issues with heat in the summer. You could also look at an air to water intercooler to get more airflow across the radiator.

      @@BigTireGarage I live in NJ but for the past two years I have taken it down to the Outer Banks (10 hour drive) at the end of August (super hot and humid). It honestly does fine at 65-70mph with 35s and 3:73 gears, but if I push it anything over that the temp will rise and keep rising until i get out of it. I recently added a deeration tank which allowed for more coolant, I think it helped a little but I still get uncomfortable with how quick the temp rises. Check out the R2.8 owners group on Facebook. It’s an issue others are having, some are trying to push their products saying their set up causes ZERO temp issues but I don’t quite believe them. I know an off-road vehicle doesn’t need to go 80mph on the highway, but the same issue occurs on long steep highway grades so you don’t have to be trying to be going fast for the issue to arise. I feel Cummins just set the ECM temp to low for the code. Thanks for the reply, I’m a huge fan and am honored to be swapping comments.
      P.S I still love the motor and would do it all over again even with this issue. Nothing is perfect and I’m cool with that.

    Might be worth checking with cummins but I believe that welding the mass air flow sensor bung into a smaller diameter pipe will throw out the air flow reading the ECU gets, whether it will care or not I dont know but worth checking!
