I think it's funny how a lot of coverage on Threads acts like it's going to bring common sense to social media forgetting Facebook was the biggest offender of spreading misinformation
I don’t want to defend meta or Facebook because they do a lot of shady shit but I feel like the spread of misinformation on Facebook is definitely a product of the user base more so than other platforms, not just because of the lack of moderation. They definitely could be doing more but that doesn’t stop peoples racist aunts and senile uncles from posting insane shit to Facebook.
Threads may not succeed if Twitter just slightly gets its act together. Because NSFW content is the biggest lifeline Twitter has at the moment. Threads not allowing that is a clear disadvantage.
and what need to be highlighted is that NSFW is not only p0rn, but also e.g. accidents, or more brutal war videos. War in Ukraine is also a huge traffic source for Twitter.
I love how the competition is managed by Zuckerberg, it's like voting on politics all over again - same faces for decades and all are essentially the same shit
Seriously hope that we don't switch from Twitter to Twitter: Facebook edition. Personally, I really hope that federated platforms rise in users from all this social media wackiness. The whole problem here is that it's owned and controlled by a company-who's priorities are simply not those of the user.
I think that's just easly release stuff, from what I've seen a lot of things are still missing like 'accept all' for follows, follower-only comment sections, afaik the algorithm isn't super sophisticated yet, creator dashboards aren't super fleshed out. I'd expect this is a trial run pretty much, and in a month or so they'll add what they need to and release to many more people
This. Banning porn already killed Tumblr, and like half of Redditors use Reddit primarily for porn. Threads may have a strong start, but its censorship is going to cost them
Exactly what I was thinking. Anything FB/meta-related is just one giant invasion of privacy and personal data. I wouldn’t touch this threads shit with a barge pole.
The biggest issue I've seen with threads is, if you've connected your Instagram, your threads account is directly tied to it. If you want to delete your threads account, you have to also delete the Instagram account that's tied to it as well.
You can deactivate your account on Threads, but can’t delete it. I can imagine a few reasons why they’ve implemented that but at least you can hide all your stuff if you wish to deactivate it.
Recently deleted my Twitter because I found myself just casually looking at porn all day, wherever I was, and realized it was really messing up my days. Couldn't focus, wasn't getting work done, and twitter made it so readily available. I didn't even start looking for it, things just eventually lead to it. That said, I also nuked my Facebook account from orbit, but that was mostly because it was just an insufferable user experience (though right in the end, was also starting to get recommended pornographic material without searching for it). Won't be giving Meta any chances anytime soon, either. The last week and a half of no social media has actually felt really good, like I got some sanity back.
Watch all the corporate accounts "switch" to Threads for a week before they stop posting on the platform entirely and go back to twitter because e-drama is good for business.
They'll post on both. It's basically free advertisement, no reason not to. I expect Elon will try to implement rules against companies using Threads in an effort to curb that and force them to pick a side. Kinda like how he started banning links to other social media sites.
@@itaistrauss5066 imagine applications like reddit, twitter, facebook, flickr, instagram, whatsapp, discord and more share the same language, talk to each other and is decentralised. That means you can be on one instance and can talk to other users on a different instance using a different application. That's the Fediverse in a nutshell.
@@CathrineMacNiel you got the some big imagination there. There is no possible way social media companies would ever combine to other users. Like Tik Tok users wouldn’t be able to talk to redditors simply bcuz it would be an expensive service and a whole lot data to manage
No matter what you say about that lizard with legs….he was smart to drop Threads exactly when ppl hated Twitter the most because they literally had a tweet-reading-limit imposed on them.
In the field of corporate stuff like this "trade secrets" normally refers to specific things like how an algorithm functions or highly specific parts of code that one business spent a lot of time and money to refine, where they are claiming that the other company poached staff or ex staff who knew these details and were able to pass them on. Less so like broad stuff that might be more obvious. Im not too in on the Meta and Twitter dealings here so I dont know for sure but in my experience thats normally what they mean so they could have grounds for legal action or at least enough to put a freeze on METAs development for enough time to damage launch impact which could also be their goal.
Can only hope that the app changes its layout, having no "for you page" or a search that isn't just peoples accounts is going to drive it into the ground
Not being able to 'delete' your accounts makes sense on the 'Meta/Facebook' scene. I haven't used Facebook for years (at least over 10 years now) but I reckon that if I had my old account information, I'd be able to reactivate my account in a jiffy. Twitter lately has become a cesspool, (and maybe Charlie is right and it is because it was the only real option up until now) but I am able to follow (and actually interact) with game devs/musicians/artists which gives me a bit of a dopamine hit. It is going to be interesting to see how things change moving forward. I don't really see the reason for an early drop with such a half baked experience, I doubt I'll be moving over to Threads, I don't really support the 'lesser of two evils' idea.
The minute Twitter decided to add restrictions, All of the sudden, out of nowhere, Facebook just poops out this new social media website called “Threads”, tf.
It's bad in a different way. Facebook is a terrible company that is incredibly invasive. Their list of data collection is insane. They want ALL your information: Health & Fitness Purchases Financial Info Location Contact Info Contacts User Content Search History Browsing History Identifiers Usage Data Sensitive Info Diagnostics Other Data
8:00 that's intentional. It's the same with Facebook. You can't delete it without deleting messenger but you can disable it and it has been that way for a long time. My family still messages/calls me on messenger so I can't really delete it. I tried convincing them to use other apps but it's no use.
Oh wow Twitter finally has competition! Can't wait to join Parlor. I mean mastodon. I mean truth social. I mean hive. I mean threads. I mean ... Charlie come on
Charlie's the personification of your average normie, of course he's not aware of alternatives like Mastodon, or much less Truth and Parlor with all the mainstream media attempts to smear them and keep them out of the limelight.
No social platform would really have to conpete with any others if they would just focus on being ACTUALLY GOOD instead of just trying to copy eachother
It is likely done to capitalize on an existing word, ("Threads" being a way to refer to a line of messages.) This could be considered true as they tried to do the same with the word "Meta".
@@cornmanclips2671 threads also has a feature where you can write out the entire thread in one go. i recall twitter having that feature a while ago before i left the platform but it works a lot better on threads than twitter.

1:00 thank you. Why cannot anyone else admit that Metaverse is complete misallocation of resources. Should be considered total failure by any reasonable measure. Do the product managers of Metaverse even use their own product??
Not even competition. Not that I like or use Twitter, but A: it's not a new app, just an extension of Instagram, and B: it already got caught censoring and shadowbanning accounts.
Threads is just a glorified Mastodon server with data collection. If they did open Threads, at some point Mastodon users can check Threads user posts and vice versa. So no, its not an original innovation from Meta, its a glorified Mastodon server for the mainstream.

I don't think that Thread is gonna work, concerning the fact that they have like restrictions on to NSFW which on Twitter has a lot of artists that are lewd with their digital canvases. There's has to be a competitor that allows nsfw content, not restricting those ideas and thing, and thread isn't gonna work nor will Twitter. Either like blue skies, Tumblr (Hoping to go back to their old days of internet content idc), or something that could have simple rules to follow and not leave artists in hole to the streets should be those things (even if it's simple nudity, nothing sex related, it needs to be priority for the app and not be problematic).

Yes that's what we needed, for Facebook to get control of the parts of social media it doesn't control yet.
Between this and the competition with Twitch and Kick, we are approaching an endgame with platforms.
And that's when I hope governments start investing on Fediverse apps such as PeerTube or Element.
Zoomed thinking for sure. 😂
I disagree. More and more are coming. There is no end in sight
Kick is crypto and gambling scams and will end as predictably as those schemes always do.
@@csolisr anything governments touch turns to shit. the point of the fediverse is to be an open source platform, with transparency about what's happening to your data, as soon as governments get their corrupt mangled rotting hands on it and other open source codes of its kind they will do what they do best, corrupt it into a barely recognizable shell of its former self. That and use it for tyranny and subjugation of its serfs
the reason why threads isn't available in the eu is because the service has yet to prove their ability to comply with the eu's reasonably strict privacy laws, and until that happens, i won't even consider downloading zuck's data farming app

i’ve found that threads has been an incredibly wholesome and “early-social-media” feeling experience so far. so far though.
Threads is already banning NSFW, battle was lose from the start

You’re putting a lot of stock on Twitter when it’s a platform that keeps crippling itself. The NSFW content won’t be enough to keep that thing afloat.
@@Iain16 Against Metaverse version of Twitter? "Threads" is going nowhere fast.

Seriously hope that we don't switch from Twitter to Twitter: Facebook edition. Personally, I really hope that federated platforms rise in users from all this social media wackiness. The whole problem here is that it's owned and controlled by a company-who's priorities are simply not those of the user.
that'll never happen, fediverse stuff is just too inconvenient for the average person to ever settle in the mainstream
It feels a bit hard to compete with twitter when your platform's not available in the European Union.
Eh? It's available here in UK lol

Twitter is like the WWE network, everyone complains but nobody stops using it. Don't be mistaken thinking Twitter will die, people are too addicted
Good for you man
Watch all the corporate accounts "switch" to Threads for a week before they stop posting on the platform entirely and go back to twitter because e-drama is good for business.
They'll post on both. It's basically free advertisement, no reason not to. I expect Elon will try to implement rules against companies using Threads in an effort to curb that and force them to pick a side. Kinda like how he started banning links to other social media sites.
I hope people realize the permissions threads is asking from it's users, it's like mark has stopped trying to even hide he's data mining everyone

Ooo so quirky not signing up for Threads. Well done. So brave.

The name "Threads" sounds more like a clothing store or a fashion app. The idea seems like it has potential though.
